Daughters school has recently extended the 'paid' breakfast club to 'free' breakfast club due to an increase in the number of children going to school not having had any breakfast.

Are people really that much on the bread line that they cannot buy a loaf of bread or some cheap porridge oats for less than a quid?

I'm not well off by any means and I do donate to food banks when I can. I also ensure my dcs have had breakfast before leaving the house as I was always led to believe it's the most important meal of the day.

You make them eat.

No you don't. That can easily be construed as abuse in many cases.

Genuine question. What food do you dislike tunnel?

Coconutspongexo · 16/10/2017 13:43

Why would I want to see your bank statements I really couldn't care less about your income Hmm or you as a matter of fact

Coconutspongexo · 16/10/2017 13:43

Never force kids to eat ffs.

DaisyRaine90 · 16/10/2017 13:45

I don’t want to show them to you, Hun.
I’m just explaining that I am not guessing I am talking from experience, so please do not assume to tell me that I am wrong.

@JonSnowsWife

"What this thread is really about, is someone appearing to be jealous that someone else is going to get the same thing for free that they have had to pay for."

Perhaps. The more intelligent see it as a thread judging poor parenting though.

I pity and feel for those who worry about providing nutritious and balanced dinners but at 75p for 1kg of oats (Aldi) I don't think the free breakfasts target the poor. They target the lazy.

In my post above I mentioned how I've seen first hand those who place less value on education and their children being prepared to learn are the same ones whose children don't eat in the mornings.

I'm happy for some taxes to be spent on those poor children.

EvilDoctorBallerinaVampireDuck · 16/10/2017 13:45

You don't make a fucking child with cystic fibrosis eat. He's 27 now and still eats when he fucking well feels like it. Walk a mile in his shoes. DD obviously doesn't need food before 12, she's doing perfectly well. Hmm

Coconutspongexo · 16/10/2017 13:48

You've been told more than once you're wrong HON by more than one poster.

You brought up your bank statements not me btw which is quite strange

JonSnowsWife · 16/10/2017 13:50

Meh. I don't see people who simply lump a free breakfast club in as simply down to poor parenting as particularly intelligent to start with to be honest.

MuseumOfCurry · 16/10/2017 13:50

This digression is besides the point. School breakfasts are intended to feed children who are hungry.

womaninatightspot · 16/10/2017 13:51

I think sometimes the kids who are farting around the breakfast table refusing to eat breakfast are the same ones at breakfast club saying they're starving. Apparently mines are often not hungry until it's time to put on coats/ shoes and get out the door then they are starving. Despite having abandoned cereal half an hour before and asking for toast that they didn't eat. It's a wonder I haven't throttled them really.

tunnelBear · 16/10/2017 13:51

@EvilDoctorBallerinaVampireDuck

I know almost nothing about cystic fibrosis but I think you're missing the point by bringing your son's illness into this. We're talking about typical people.

@JonSnowsWife

Genuinely, nothing you'd typically find in a British supermarket. Even beyond that, you'd be up to testicles and other nasties to really put me off.

I hate the smell of truffles and the taste of foie gras but would eat them if it's what was given to me though.

I'd need a deep breath before tripe but that's because it gave me food poisoning a few years ago.

I know I'm lucky but I think this is quite a tangent.

LBOCS2 · 16/10/2017 13:52

As pointed out upthread tunnelbear, it’s all very well to say 75p on porridge oats is cheap, but they’re useless if you can’t afford milk, or indeed the £5 to stick on your electricity card to keep a fridge running to keep the milk fresh or turn on the hob to cook said oats.

DaisyRaine90 · 16/10/2017 13:55

I said I have evidence to the contrary but will not post it because it is of a personal nature.

Just because 3 people tell you your wrong does not mean you are.

I suppose your relying on evidence and fact not hearsay??

I recommend those people who have been told they cannot get it, question and/or appeal that decision.

Might be worth it for them??
But tbh none of my business if people are too pig ignorant to help themselves

EvilDoctorBallerinaVampireDuck · 16/10/2017 13:56

It was him I was talking about tunnel. If you force a child to eat anything, you put them off it for life. Nothing can make XH eat fat or Brussels sprouts now.

EvilDoctorBallerinaVampireDuck · 16/10/2017 13:57

And DS1 is fucking normal, thanks very much.

DaisyRaine90 · 16/10/2017 13:59

JonSnowsWife

Not everyone in this country is a statist.
Some of us just have different beliefs to you as regards the role of the state.
Ie, not everyone believes they are responsible for feeding people’s children breakfast.

You can be an intelligent person and oppose breakfast clubs.
As adults we often have differing opinions due to a variety of factors regardless of our IQ scores.

Don’t try to make out everyone who disagrees with you does so because they are ignorant, eh?

tunnelBear · 16/10/2017 13:59

@LBOCS2

I have porridge and water. I add seeds but that's to give me a shiny coat and oiled joints.

Why do you think I've seen such an overlap in groups with those lacking in helping their children get ready for school and those children missing breakfast?

They aren't always anywhere near the breadline.

I've worked in Indy schools for the last 25 years (still have a role within a group of LEAs) and even amongst the very wealthy, the children who don't have breakfast are the ones whose parents are uninvolved in their education beyond writing a cheque for the fees.

I don't for a second begrudge free breakfasts. My only point is that I don't believe it's down to the parents' finances in many cases.

@EvilDoctorBallerinaVampireDuck

Most breakfasts don't include fat or brussel sprouts. I'm not being obtuse but I don't know what point you're trying to make.

Mine is that most children should be made to eat breakfast.

JonSnowsWife · 16/10/2017 14:00

@womaninatightspot yes we once had this with DS. Didnt want breakfast. Didnt want breakfast bar/equivalent. Was in the office by 11am having a snack and some toast because he'd told them I didnt feed him. Hmm Blush

JonSnowsWife · 16/10/2017 14:01

Don’t try to make out everyone who disagrees with you does so because they are ignorant, eh?

I don't thankyou. I just happen to disagree with you. Grin

MuseumOfCurry · 16/10/2017 14:02

Children refusing to eat and being hungry in the short term aren't the target of school lunches either. Even well-fed children are likely to accept a piece of toast an hour after breakfast, toast is pretty delicious. In the absence of school breakfasts they'd just connect the dots in due course.

DaisyRaine90 · 16/10/2017 14:03

JonSnowsWife

Disagree with my about what?
My intelligence??

😂

JonSnowsWife · 16/10/2017 14:03

Mine is that most children should be made to eat breakfast.

Nobody should be made to eat breakfast.

PersianCatLady · 16/10/2017 14:04

That’s just not true.
You are entitled to tax credits, child benefits, housing benefit etc. If you have kids

If you have been claiming HB while receiving student finance, you will be classed as a benefit cheat.

JonSnowsWife · 16/10/2017 14:04

Agree @MuseumOfCurry.

JonSnowsWife · 16/10/2017 14:07

@PersianCatLady, interesting isn't it that this doesn't seem to be getting through? But apparently Sallys Uncles Brothers Sister managed to get HB so surely everyone else who wants to risk a criminal record for fraud should do just that.
