to ask what you would serve with smoked haddock fillets?

Would you go with potatoes and veg or chips and peas/ beans or just a side salad?

I normally do salad with fish but I haven't cooked smoked fish before. Not sure whether an olive oil/vinegar dressing would compliment the smoked flavour?

Thank you!

I recently did a Dijon mustard mash with a white wine sauce and peas with smoked haddock. It was delicious. I made the sauce using this recipe: www.fishforthought.co.uk/hot-sauces-for-fish-and-seafood.html

TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:14

The other thing I have in is potato croquettes? Veg I have are carrots, swede, green beans, brussels sprouts or tinned peas and tinned beans....

I'd make it into kedgeree or as an ingredient in a fish pie.

Love smoked fish but not as a standalone thing

mimbleandlittlemy · 12/10/2017 17:14

New potatoes and spinach - I often do it poached on spinach and with a poached egg. Though more often than not I do it in risotto with leek and courgette.

MagicFajita · 12/10/2017 17:16

Mashed potato and spinach.

scaryteacher · 12/10/2017 17:16

A poached egg and grated cheese was a hat my Grandma and Mum do with them. I chunk the fillets, coat in seasoned flour and heat gently in butter. In another pan I cook chopped bacon and mushrooms. Add the contents of the bacon pan to the fishy pan, and add creme fraiche; sprinkle with parsley. You could also make kedgeree with them.

SheGotOffThePlane · 12/10/2017 17:16

I would bake it on a bed of peppered spinach topped with a cheese sauce and breadcrumbs.
It's my go to smoked haddock dish.

EvansOvalPies · 12/10/2017 17:17

I was also going to suggest spinach with a poached egg, or new potatoes and fine green beans. Was beaten to it! (But a bit of crusty bread too).

I normally like samphire with plain white fish, but maybe a bit too salty with a smoked fish, which is already quite salty.

FrankiesKnuckle · 12/10/2017 17:17

Another vote for kedgeree, my current go to comfort dish.

TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:17

AndNoneForGretchenWieners That recipe sounds gorgeous but I don't have flour or white wine and I can't cook things like that to save my life. A chef I ain't!

vegetable stir fried rice. I cook the fish in a bit of milk and it is very tasty this way.

iseenodust · 12/10/2017 17:18

From what you've got I would go with potato & veg. Melted butter & black pepper on potatoes.
Otherwise another vote for kedgeree.

EvansOvalPies · 12/10/2017 17:18

Gretchen's idea with mustard mash and white wine sauce sounds delicious.

FlibbertigibbetArmadillo · 12/10/2017 17:19

New potatoes, spinach and a poached egg

NachoAddict · 12/10/2017 17:19

I love smoked haddock and pea rissotto its a slimming world recipe, i would put spinach in too.

Of your optiones I would say potatoes and veg.

TheWeatherGirl1 · 12/10/2017 17:19

I'd poach the fish in milk and then use the milk for mash with broccoli or spinach (both).
Delicious.

TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:19

I actually have frozen spinach. Are you talking fresh spinach as in a salad or cooked spinach? Do you fry it or boil? Can you tell I haven't a clue what I'm at?

something creamy goes nice with smoked fish, how about mashed potato and leeks in a cheese sauce

ADishBestEatenCold · 12/10/2017 17:19

If it's proper smoked haddock, then Cullen Skink. Technically it's a soup, but with chunks of crusty bread, a meal in itself.

Lots of recipes about, but this one is particularly easy.

EvansOvalPies · 12/10/2017 17:20

Sorry Ties - crossed posts. (But I will try Gretchen's idea myself at some point)

MagicFajita · 12/10/2017 17:20

If you pan-fry frozen spinach with some oil and add some garlic that'd be lovely.

Corcory · 12/10/2017 17:21

I was going to say cook in milk. Then use the milk to make a white sauce. Serve with potatoes/mash and peas or any other green veg.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 12/10/2017 17:21

mash (with mustard or horseradish if yo want to be fancy)
put spinach on top (frozen is fine)
the fish
then poached egg on the top of it all

hungry now

GinIsIn · 12/10/2017 17:22

Have you got rice, frozen peas, an onion and some curry powder? If so, kedgeree.

katienana · 12/10/2017 17:24

Poach in milk, serve with mash and veg plus a poached egg.
