to ask what you would serve with smoked haddock fillets?

Would you go with potatoes and veg or chips and peas/ beans or just a side salad?

I normally do salad with fish but I haven't cooked smoked fish before. Not sure whether an olive oil/vinegar dressing would compliment the smoked flavour?

Thank you!

Kedgeree, or mash and nice green veg x

yomellamoHelly · 12/10/2017 17:57

Samosas everytime. Fab combination

TiesThatBindMe · 13/10/2017 00:34

Just to update. I fried it. I had salad and the other half had potato croquettes and mushy peas. He reckoned it was cooked to perfection (I'm sure it was probably overcooked slightly, but I'll take the compliment).
Thank you all for taking the time to offer suggestions. I will be buying more next week and might get a little more adventurous perhaps! Thanks again.

Mushroom soup makes a great cheat's base for fish pie. If feeling like swapping things around add very finely chopped leak instead of onion (then no need to soften first).

TiesThatBindMe · 13/10/2017 14:56

iseenodust thanks for that. Might attempt a fish pie next week. What do I put in? Chopped leek, the mushroom soup, maybe the green beans? and chop up the fish? Do you take the skin off or leave it on? Any chance of a recipe lol?

I'm craving this how my Mom used to cook it when I was a kid now.
Poached in milk, and then served in the milk with crusty bread and butter to dip in.

Salad with Reggae Reggae sauce ... nom nom

Twinkie1 · 13/10/2017 15:09

Poached egg, green beans and new potato’s with hollandaise sauce.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 13/10/2017 15:12

Ooh love me a bit of Finny haddock. Poach it and have it with bread and butter. It doesn't need anything else.

sadie9 · 13/10/2017 15:15

I poach the haddock in milk with salt and pepper added, then fry some onion and courgettes/mushrooms/leeks til softened, add a pinch of curry powder. Take out the haddock from the milk then make a small bit of white sauce with the warm milk and the onion/veg mixture. Stir in some frozen peas at the last minute.
Serve with spaghetti or penne. Stir in some frozen peas at the last minute.

A variation on cauliflower cheese, real comfort food!

BabsGanoush · 13/10/2017 15:18

Keep it simple - smoked fish on a bed of spinach, poached egg and (white) bread and butter. Makes a great supper.

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/10/2017 15:20

Lots of lovely looking suggestions here.

I would use it in fish pie, kedgeree or Cullen Skink.

goose1964 · 13/10/2017 15:34

Another kedgeree vite, it's also nice in a curry

knowwhereyourheadis · 13/10/2017 15:47

Mash or champ potatoes.
Cheese, onion or parsley sauce.
Peas, broccoli, cabbage.

Comfort fooooood!

londonmummy1966 · 13/10/2017 15:48

I make a version of that Marry Berry dish in reverse. Chop and soften a red onion and some mushrooms with a little oil. Skin the fillets and cut into chunks. Mix with the onions and mushrooms and put in the bottom of a baking dish. Top with cauliflower cheese (frozen stuff from Iceland is great if you cba to make it). Cook at 175 for 25 minutes. A go to dish for DH and me on a Friday as the DDs get pizza if they've behaved all week.

SleepFreeZone · 13/10/2017 15:48

Asparagus and crushed new potatoes.

Mia1415 · 13/10/2017 15:49

Mashed potato and peas! One of my favourite childhood meals.

Smoked Hancock cooked in milk with mash and sweetcorn. Yum

iseenodust · 13/10/2017 15:54

Cheats fish pie involves
Put potatoes on for mash.
Half a tin of soup (mushroom or fish or chowder) in a casserole dish place that in oven 180.
Finely chop leek and chuck that in.
Maybe add a slug of white wine if that takes your fancy.
Take your haddock, hold by tail end and with sharp knife get between skin and flesh as close to end as possible. Then it's a sort of slide the knife along almost flat on its side and pull tight on the skin and it will come off in one go. No hacking back & forth needed. Chop into pieces.
Make mash.
Put chopped haddock into hot soup.
Add optional handful of frozen sweetcorn.
Dollop on mash, make sure get close to edges of dish.
Top with cheddar.
Back into oven for probably 15mins (til cheese bubbly & browning).

Ours is not most sophisticated but guaranteed tasty.
Even less prep if you buy a packet of chopped fish pie mix (usually cod, haddock salmon) from the fridge section in supermarket.

possumgoddess · 13/10/2017 16:16

It has to be creamy mashed potato, really cheesy cheese sauce, and sweetheart cabbage. Alternatively make it into a smoked haddock and gruyere cheese soufflé - yum yum!
