to ask what you would serve with smoked haddock fillets?

Would you go with potatoes and veg or chips and peas/ beans or just a side salad?

I normally do salad with fish but I haven't cooked smoked fish before. Not sure whether an olive oil/vinegar dressing would compliment the smoked flavour?

Thank you!

I just had to google Kedgeree. Can't believe I've never heard of that. Though in saying that I'm not British. Fish pie sounds lovely.
Thanks so much for the suggestions. You all must be great cooks! Shock
I'm a bloody disaster.

Kedgeree is insanely simple - the hardest thing is to chop an onion!

9toenails · 12/10/2017 17:29

Smoked haddock , salad leaves just with a splash of good vinegar and oil, soft boiled eggs, fresh bread and butter. Cold muscadet to drink.

We had this yesterday teatime. Delicious.

TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:30

Fenella I don't have frozen peas or curry powder and won't get to shops.

Next time then - it's SO YUM!

Firesuit · 12/10/2017 17:31

RIce. This is a regular dish for us, and the smoked haddock by itself is a very strong flavour. I need to mix it with rice for each mouthful to reduce it to the ideal strength.

Katedotness1963 · 12/10/2017 17:32

I like to have just bread and butter with a smokie.

TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:32

9toenails (what a name!!), I'm happy to hear you accompanied it with salad. I only dress it with olive oil and Cyder vinegar myself.

I'll see what the other half prefers when he's home.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.

I think mash would work equally well, though I've not tried that.

wannabestressfree · 12/10/2017 17:33

Just shove in what you have got- I wouldn’t put curry powder in mine but I love kedgeree. It’s my go to food when I feel like poo!

cardy1969 · 12/10/2017 17:34

I had potato dauphinois with smoked haddock and veg last week. Was delicious!

MrsMotherHen · 12/10/2017 17:34

I have just made them for tea we had new potatoes with butter green veg poached eggs.

Silverthorn · 12/10/2017 17:35

Either mash or jasmine rice with green beans or broccolli. Great in fish pie too.

TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:38

You guys should put together a MN cookery book. Ye would make a fortune. I'd buy it!

I love smoked haddock!
What about creamy mash potato with some black pepper and a cheese sauce? Maybe some grilled tomatoes on the side!

AdaColeman · 12/10/2017 17:39

The haddock will be fine served with potato croquettes, have you got anything to make a cream or cheese sauce with? Or some tartare sauce perhaps?

TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:40

I can't believe I got an A in home economics and to this day have never poached either an egg nor a fish! And today was the first I've heard of kedgeree. Clearly lacking in culinary ability.

FoxyinherRoxy · 12/10/2017 17:40

Really buttery mashed potato and peas. There is no other way.

TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:42

I have a packet of Loyd Grossman 'Creamy chanterelle mushroom and white wine sauce'?
I was thinking I could try fish pie (that would be another first), and use either that packet of sauce or else I have a tin of mushroom soup?

OP posts:
TiesThatBindMe · 12/10/2017 17:43

I'd put the green beans in the pie?

Bread and butter with salad or green beans.
ADishBestEatenCold Thanks for the reminder of cullen skink! Delicious.

The mushroom sauce will go very well with the haddock. Wine

MexicanBob · 12/10/2017 17:47

Two poached eggs. Who wants anything more.

LakieLady · 12/10/2017 17:47

Smoked haddock is one of my favourites. I serve it with spinach on top and a cheese and chive sauce, accompanied by new potatoes and peas; in risotto with spinach and white wine, and flaked into cauliflower cheese (with a jacket potato).

Sometimes I just eat it with a hunk of really good brown bread and butter.
