... A bit upset to be referred to, by a 3rd party, as 'huge'?

Just this....

Someone referred to me as this... You'll recognise her.. She's the huge girl...

Apart from rudeness... At what size does someone become 'huge'.. I appreciate it's all relative etc etx...

PS I'm an (in proportion) size 18-20 and 5 foot 8. So to me tallish and curvy...

I don't think saying a size 12 is on the larger side is being goady. I am a size 8 and I am right on the edge of ideal weight for my height. In the days when I was a size 12 I was 1.5 stone heavier than I am now, and definitely not slim. And I'm an apple as well, with small hips and a large waist.

We can kid ourselves all we like, but vanity sizing means that we are all at least one, and probably two, sizes larger than we would have been in the 70s.

Yes those women pictured are obsese. And the fact that some people think they aren't just shows how acclimatised we've all become to seeing bigger people everywhere.

I live abroad in a capital city and am always shocked by how large people in Britain have got.

AtlanticWaves · 12/10/2017 08:20

To be 100% honest I don't give a damn about how fat people have got with exception of the obese members of my family.

I am very worried about their health (I never say anything though, it's their life).

As for other fat people, your choice. I don't feel that I'm better than you. Just healthier and fitter

Ploppie4 · 12/10/2017 08:21

When someone’s BMI exceeds the healthy range. Huge seems a rude word though.

Oblomov17 · 12/10/2017 08:22

5-8 is Taller than average.
Size 20 is huge. Not curvy.
But you don’t ‘say it’, do you?

Lethaldrizzle · 12/10/2017 08:29

I agree those women in the pics are pretty big. That's alot of extra weight to be carrying around and putting a big strain on the body. However the word huge was extraordinarily rude!

dadshere · 12/10/2017 08:29

If you are hurt by it, it is hurtful. It is nobody's business how big you are, if you are happy being fat, then just ignore the comments.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 12/10/2017 08:37

What strikes me is that being overweight is a fact about me that I don't feel shame or embarrassment. Maybe I feel a bit defiant sometimes, because I am constantly fed the message through media and public opinion that I should hate my body, hate any fat, feel unattractive, slow, stupid, apologise for my body. I like my body, I feel strong, flexible, capable, in heels I am taller than many men.

Is it only acceptable to be fat if you are ashamed and apologetic and on a diet to be normal?

KarenStreetWalker · 12/10/2017 08:44

What a horrid thread - fat shaming, concern trolling (spot on phrase). Calling someone huge is unbelievably rude. I’ve put on 4 stone in the past 3 years due to anti-depressants after 2 bereavements - I’m fully aware of my weight gain (12 to an 18) and I’m trying to tackle it. People need to think before they speak; everyone has a back story. Just be kind.

RickOShay · 12/10/2017 08:49

Being overweight does NOT always mean unhealthy.. But don’t let that stop you from using it as a ‘concerned’ excuse to criticise. If you fat shame, you are the one with the problem, not the people with the weight.

@dihaster ok so size 12 is heavy for you, doesn't mean it is for everyone. For a taller than average woman, it would typically mean being bang in the middle of their healthy BMI range. Fair enough, vanity sizing is probably a thing, but nobody notes how much taller (not just wider) we are growing generation by generation, which also accounts for the adjustments in clothes sizing. I was reading an article the other day on BBC news, we have grown a meter in the past 100 years!

Laura2018 · 12/10/2017 09:14

Very rude to comment on a persons appearance in that way!! 18-20 is very big though and not at all healthy. But people should not call you big like that it is really mean.

user1471459936 · 12/10/2017 09:14

Hahahaha! We have not grown a meter in the past 100 years. That would have made the average woman about 60cm tall 100 years ago.

Yazoop · 12/10/2017 09:14

Sorry that should read quarter of a meter

Yazoop · 12/10/2017 09:15

I've been up all night! Grin

user1471459936 · 12/10/2017 09:17

Haha! In my mind there are lots of 60cm tall women running around Grin. Get some sleep! Smile

Yazoop · 12/10/2017 09:21

I know what I'm going to dream about Grin

MynewnameisKy · 12/10/2017 09:53

Dances A BMI of 30 or over is considered clinically obese.

amusedbush · 12/10/2017 09:54

What BMI tips you from overweight to obese?

25 - 29.9 is overweight, 30 - 34.9 is category 1 obese, 35 - 39.9 is category 2 obese and so on.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 12/10/2017 10:26

See, I don't think there is anything wrong in the slightest with OP's size. What does it matter as long as she's not eating your chocolate bar? Surely all these size 2 yeah right mumsnetters are the anomaly. If you think of our closest ape relatives such as bonobos, chimps, gorillas and orangutans, you don't see ribs but you do see a big stomach.

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2017 10:27

bingbongnoise if you think "No way in hell are those women huge or obese" in that photo, then imo it just goes to show how perceptions have changed over time.

If those women lived in my area, I'm sure most of the locals would say they're not obese.

But that's probably because over 68% of adults in my borough are infact overweight/obese themselves.

Mominatrix · 12/10/2017 10:51

These women (pictured) are 5 ft 8 - 5 ft 9, and size 18 , and no way in hell are they huge/obese etc....

Oh yes they are. They are attractive women, but they are definitely more than just overweight.

People point out that a size 16 is average in the UK but this also reflects that more than 60% of women in the UK are overweight and a more than a quarter are obese. With these statistics, being a size 16 is not a goal, but a sobering statistic.

With the majority of people being overweight or obese, people truly have lost sight of what is a healthy weight and clamping hand over ears and shouting "fatshaming!" does nothing about trying to turn these statistics around.

MozzchopsThirty · 12/10/2017 10:54

The women in those picture are obese

What is wrong with people that they think that is normal???
