Even if your name is something like Elizabeth and 'Liz' would be reasonable or indeed Thomas to 'Tom'. Not as in Charlotte to 'Lottie' - I can't exactly articulate why but I find the latter unreasonable.
My name is a bit of a silly 'made-up' name if you like. I'm named after a capital city so when people shorten it it ends up sounding even more ridiculous.
But do you make a point of saying "Well actually can you call me xxx please" even for your dc?

  • Not assume - ask if they can

My name is one that can't really be shortened, so I've never had that problem, but some people seem to think it's cute to add "ee" to the end Angry I give them "the look" and tell them how my dad threatened to punch a teacher who did that!

I'm a bit funny with names, I've always called my DH by the full version of his name, everyone else calls him the shortened version.

A colleague of mine shortened my name when I joined her team, despite me being in the department for 6 years and never being known by a shortened version. I corrected her and she was really put out, said it was being used with affection!

Fauxtatoes · 08/10/2017 11:06

My family are the only ones who call me by my shortened name spits super jarring when a stranger does it. My new BIL calls me the shortened name and I don't like it. He's calling me it because that's what my sister calls me. Maybe it's because I don't like him though Grin

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 08/10/2017 11:15

This happens to me a lot, I can't stand it but find it amazing that people take umbridge when they are corrected-like I'm the fucking rude one Shock

Floellabumbags · 08/10/2017 11:18

I never use the full version of my name (which is in the OP) so wouldn't be at all offended.

MrsOverTheRoad · 08/10/2017 11:22

I'm always taken aback by it to be honest. My name is easily shortened...think "Tracy" to "Trace" but not that...I think it's over-familiar when the person isn't a friend.

BitOfANameChange · 08/10/2017 11:25

I go by the ful name or a short form. In fact most people use the short form. But there is another short form of my name, and people definitely get corrected if they use that.

I think it's rude to call something they haven't either been introduced as or haven't indicated you can use. You call people what they want to be called. Calling someone a name or short version that you want to use is arrogant on your part.

InappropriateGavels · 08/10/2017 12:04

My first name is double-barrelled. I have never, ever, not once in my entire life used the shortened version of it. I hate the shortened version. I have never given anyone permission to use the shortened version. The only person that uses anything other than my full name is my Husband.

Do people assume they can use the shortened version? All the fucking time - they don't even ask. When I correct them, they get angry at me for daring to correct them. I've never understood why people get so put out at someone making a correction like that. It's MY name, so you say it MY way, not what suits YOU. It doesn't belong to you, it belongs to me, it is one of the most important parts of my identity and no-one else has a right to modify it. It's so rude.

If someone refuses to address me correctly after repeated corrections I cease to respond to the incorrect name. You get a certain amount of chances and then I'm done. If I provided ID with the wrong name on it, it wouldn't be accepted so why would I answer to someone calling me the wrong name?

I'm 3 months into my new job. My manager and most of my colleagues have shortened my name from probably the first week. Slightly annoying.

takemetomars · 08/10/2017 12:06

I hate people shortening my name without asking. It is overly familiar
