To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

Jack Black looks like a badger who’s been run over and then had a job done on him by an amateur taxidermist. Yet he manages to bag Kate Winslet (even though initially he doesn’t think she’s all that hot) and the beautiful ex who broke his heart.

Mollie85 · 06/10/2017 17:56

Laiste - so far I've done this with:

All of the Star Wars films
Jurassic park
Mrs doubtfire
Mary poppins
And inception

I do like love actually as a once a year "tradition". I do however have an irrational dislike for Keira who seems to just pout and doe eye her way through every movie.
this irrational dislike also extends to Ellie Goulding but that's another thread

Favourite story is probably the Colin Firth and the housekeeper. Conversely (in my opinion) she is one of the better actors in the movie despite being a relative unknown...

imnottoofussed · 06/10/2017 17:58

I went to watch it with my friend in the cinema, god knows what sort of comments I was making because she then bought me the sound track for Christmas Confused

Mollie85 · 06/10/2017 17:58

By the way, I am not being sexist - my irrational dislike also extends to certain male actors...
... Ashton Kutcher I'm looking at you...

ProfYaffle · 06/10/2017 18:02

I'd forgotten that 'Ant or Dec' was from this film. Best thing about it imho. Dh and I always call them that now.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 18:03

I like Withnail, its quirky.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 18:05

Ant or dec look so young !
Marcus brigstock is amusing.

SideOrderofSprouts · 06/10/2017 18:08

I love love actually

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/10/2017 18:15

'm nominating Casablanca, Withnail and I and The Blues Bothers

Yawnfest

I hold no particular brief for The Blue Brothers, but Casablanca is one of the best films ever made and Withnail and I is just marvellous. Nobody is wrong about Titanic, though. Pile o'shite.

plantsitter · 06/10/2017 18:20

SideOrderofSprouts you should've put another actually on the end!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/10/2017 18:22

Controversially, I also like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I saw that in the cinema as a child and was not traumatised oddly, given my inability to watch anything frightening or to refrain from crying at anything sentimental. Delighted to see it again many years later when my children were tiny. The lead adult female is called Truly Scrumptious. And there you have the late 60s/early 70s summed up in a single sentence (although the Bond 'girl' Pussy Galore runs it close). Original story written by Ian Fleming, screenplay by Roald Dahl.

Butch Cassidy is not an awful film. Grease is. Saturday Night Fever is little better. Mamma Mia is great fun.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 06/10/2017 18:23

Bridesmaids was a big disappointment after rave reviews. I kept thinking, what am I missing?
I haven't seen The Holiday yet.

Sarahh2014 · 06/10/2017 18:42

Don't mind the film but I hate Keira knightley full stop and the way the Emma Thompson doesn't grow a pair and say who the fuck is that necklace for? Billy bob is strangely sexy in it tho lol

CockacidalManiac · 06/10/2017 19:18

I’ll fight anyone that disparages Withnail and I

CoughLaughFart · 06/10/2017 19:26

I also hate Love Actually. There's the obvious of Keira Knightley finding it somehow charming that the best man at her wedding was stalking her (and probably wanking over the wedding video) and Colin Firth pretty much being a sex tourist. But what I found most offensive was that, in a film about love in all its forms, literally every character is straight. It's not like Curtis doesn't get how to portray gay relationships either - look at Four Weddings.

stardust18 · 06/10/2017 19:32

I'm sorry I absolutely LOVE it 😍
I always watch it before Christmas it's one of my all time favs

BlueButTrue · 06/10/2017 19:45

I'm of the opinion that all of you saying you cannot stand Keira Knightley are just jealous that she's very pretty and slim

Runs into hiding

BlueButTrue · 06/10/2017 19:46

I really liked Knightley in The Duchess Smile

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 06/10/2017 19:46

Cough there were some lesbians. Frances de la Tour was part of a couple. They got edited out.

Allthewaves · 06/10/2017 19:46

Hate it with a passion. Watching it once was one too many times

Fekko · 06/10/2017 19:48

Never seen it! I try to avoid films the the world and his dog rave about. They are usually crappy, sentimental rot.

I still have gut ache from being dragged to see Pretty Wonan when it came out.

MumofDyslexic · 06/10/2017 19:49

Keira Knightley is in my favourite version of Pride and Prejudice and she plays a very believable Elizabeth Bennett. I still can't watch Love AC again.

Fekko · 06/10/2017 19:49

And for Christmas it has to be Elf.

You can stop the thread here now.

ethelfleda · 06/10/2017 19:51

Bridesmaids was a big disappointment after rave reviews

Couldn't agree more!!

ZanyMobster · 06/10/2017 19:55

YABVVVVU absolutely love that film!!
