To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

AIBU?

Best bit... bill nighy ant or Dec

ArDali1 · 07/10/2017 22:37

Also theres a film I once watched called "Confetti" that was by far the worst movie I have ever watched, I couldn't finish it, I was just absolutely horrified by how BORING it was.

SoPassRemarkable · 07/10/2017 22:38

Never seen it.

I can't stand Hugh grant, bill Nighy, Keira knightly or martine so knew I would hate the film.

BigRedMama · 07/10/2017 22:43

The whole film makes me fucking cringe...Confused

reallyorange · 07/10/2017 22:43

I knew this would be LA before opening the thread!
There was also a thread on it a few months ago. I'm in the minority finding it offensively vile.

NoSquirrels · 07/10/2017 22:48

OP I love you! I only opened this thread to see if it was THAT film and IT IS!!! It's got 1 good scene, and the rest is utter unadulterated pigswill. YANBU.

Honeychild54 · 07/10/2017 22:55

I thought as much. I've known it to snow in real-London late January and sometimes Easter. Rarely Christmas. And I suspect there are only about three cars parked outside and not a van to be seen. Unless it's a camper van or one delivering organic ponchos or something equally unrealistic.

No-one who likes and knows about film loves Love Actually. YANBU.

Don't like Love Actually myself, but who are these people "who like and know about film" and what qualifies them to know better than the ordinary viewing public?

jacintaR · 07/10/2017 23:15

@ArDali1 I bought Confetti thinking it would be hilarious since the actors are all comedians. I couldn't believe how painfully horrendous it was.

DamsonGin · 07/10/2017 23:16

Confetti was just a bag of shite. Only film I've binned rather than given to the charity shop.

Wauden · 07/10/2017 23:43

Never watched it!

Littlemissamy · 08/10/2017 08:41

How can anyone hate Toy Story?!

The80sweregreat · 08/10/2017 08:53

Confetti was boring, I agree. the trailer for it looked really good, but the film was not. I did watch ' death at the funeral' on netflix and that wasnt too bad - mildly amusing and does have Peter Dinkledge in it, which was a bonus.
I did turn off ' friends with benefits' , but i suppose I am not really the demographic for that film ( not being very young and trendy) it was just awful.
and a film once with Jennifer Aniston , which really was bad.

I agree that Richard Curtis films are made for the American audiences - but its a bit of escapism and we all need that now and again and I like most of LA!

Chocolatear · 08/10/2017 09:50

Forgot about Mamma Mia. Another unwatchable film. I can't watch Disney films either.

noeffingidea · 08/10/2017 09:55

I've never seen Love actually, and have no plans to do so.
Generally speaking, I hate 'rom coms' and what used to be called chick flicks (don't know if they still are.) So would probably hatee it if I was forced to watch it.

SeaWitchly · 08/10/2017 10:05

Keira Knightley is in my favourite version of Pride and Prejudice and she plays a very believable Elizabeth Bennett. I still can't watch Love AC again

I struggle to understand how anyone can feel that the KK version of P&P is the best... there are some nice moments in it and lovely cinematography... but KK is awful! She is entirely unappealing as EB with her big teeth, jutting jaw and gurning shoutiness masquerading as acting.

I second a PP who said that they needed to purge this abomination from their conscious mind with a binge fest of the BBC miniseries. How can you ever compare Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth's sublime acting with KK woodeness? Matthew Mcfadyen was tolerable I suppose but not a patch on CF.

And perhaps that's also why I was so disappointed that an actor of CF's calibre was wasted on such a grim storyline in Love Actually.
LA must be the most overhyped, cynical, gruesome Christmas [or indeed any time of year] film ever made. I agree with all PP slating it and despair for the mental well being of those who purport to love it.
The jezebel article describes why brilliantly, I hate it for all those reasons.

Biggest pile of steamimg tosh ever!!!

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 08/10/2017 10:49

She is entirely unappealing as EB with her big teeth, jutting jaw

arent we all meant to be intelligent forward-looking people on MN, regardless of which movies we love/hate..... so can we just lay off lambasting female stars for their looks? KK didn't choose jaw/teeth. Imagine if someone on here called Dawn French a fattie, you'd all go nuts ffs

onlyindreams · 08/10/2017 10:52

How sad to learn that Liesl had died. I never knew. Loved her in the Sound of Music.

plantsitter · 08/10/2017 10:57

I don't mind Mamma Mia but it is a bit like one of those shows the school used to put on at the end of term. Teachers! Dancing! In jeans!

The80sweregreat · 08/10/2017 10:59

Mamma MIa is okay, right up to the bit where Bronson attempts to 'sing'.
that is toe curling.

MaidofHonour · 08/10/2017 11:00

I think the series of P and P is glorious for a full retelling of the book but the film is great. The cinematography, the music, the parents relationship is more believable : I really rate Brenda Blethyn's Mrs Bennett, she humanises the character. And Keira and Matthew McFadyen are great to watch.
I really didn't particularly like Jennifer Ehle or Colin Firth: too old - looking for a start!

GabsAlot · 08/10/2017 11:06

why is it cynical it shows all sorts of love some which you would give up your life for e.g laura linney

liz70 · 08/10/2017 12:35

"a binge fest of the BBC miniseries. "

I would, only we don't have a working VHS player anymore. Sad

ShoesHaveSouls · 08/10/2017 13:14

Ahem, the Colin Firth BBC miniseries is on Netflix Smile

SittingAround1 · 08/10/2017 13:53

To be fair to KK her character was ' pretty newlywed who blokes fancy. ' She couldn't do much.
Same for MM and Alan Rickman's secretary ' pretty member of staff who middle aged blokes fancy (despite large thighs ahhh)'.
The Laura Linnay story really annoyed me. She couldn't turn her phone off for an hour? Her brother was in residential care so perfectly safe, and what man who finally makes it into his love internet's bedroom doesn't wait 5mins more for a pretty much guaranteed shag?

The 2 porn actors were completely unbelievable. I admit I don't know anything about porn production but something tells me it's not all nice and respectible as portrayed.

Lastly KK & husband's house in central London would be worth millions. How did they managed to buy that?
