To hate a much loved film with so much passion

I hate the fucking annoying, saccharine voiceover at the opening airport scene
I hate Emma Thompsons irritating character and hammy acting
I hate Hugh Grants insistence on playing himself
I hate how we're supposed to find Martines character so salt of the earth and endearing- shes fucking annoying
I hate the Liam Neeson storyline and his weird relationship with his weird woolly haired kid who should be getting a life
Im left unmoved by Laura Linney
I absolutely cannt stand Keira Knightleys faux coy girlish smile and that entire weird stalker relationship
I can just about stomach Mr Darcy and his Portuguese squeeze...JUST ABOUT
Bill Nighy - once you've seen the song performed once you're like...whatever...zzzzzz

I find the whole film absolutely sick making and toe curling and yet every Christmas DM forces us to watch it.

and it has the GOD that is Andrew Lincoln in it pre-walking dead

C619 · 06/10/2017 16:12

@MrsArchchancellorRidcully

Did you know that The Walking Dead is a continuation story of Love Actually?

If you think of Love Actually in those terms... it's not so bad now is it?

morningconstitutional2017 · 06/10/2017 16:15

If loads of people love a film or a book it can put me right off, especially if it's recommended with 'You must see/read this.' I want to make up my own mind about it without feeling under pressure to love it too.

Three or Four Weddings and a Funeral is one of those, I saw about 15 minutes of it once but could stand it no longer. I doubt I'll ever watch Titanic either.

One Christmas I had to sit through Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as a family member with the loudest voice loved it. Never again.

BakerCandlestickmaker · 06/10/2017 16:44

Butch Cassidy etc was a horrible film imo. So hyped back in the day.

Nancy91 · 06/10/2017 16:48

It's a Christmas film and all Christmas films are good, YABU

I fucking love Christmas

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/10/2017 16:58

I've no idea why a movie about a grown man grooming a teenager is so beloved.

And he's such a self-pitying shite because "women took advantage of his need for money and bought him for sex" (paraphrased, obviously, so you get the gist - I don't want to have to watch it again to get it word perfect).

And of course, it's offing boring, which is the worst possible offence on my book.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/10/2017 16:58

*effing - not offing

Bicyclethief · 06/10/2017 17:03

Gone with the wind😴

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/10/2017 17:03

rather than royalties whenever the film is shown she should get a slap

Can I volunteer to administer said slaps until my hand hurts so much that I can't lift it

ethelfleda · 06/10/2017 17:13

YANBU to dislike the film -thats your choice.
I quite like it though Smile

Bicyclethief · 06/10/2017 17:14

Films I think I have only ever watched from the same point but never from the beginning or to the end:

  • gone with the wind, always from the staircase scene
  • the beach- always from when Leo is in the water

-escape to victory- always from the football scene

While list of them

Bicyclethief · 06/10/2017 17:15

Correction: films I think I have watched but haven't

Ducknose · 06/10/2017 17:18

The Holiday is muchmuchmuchmuch much worse!

Jiggler · 06/10/2017 17:20

Oh God yeah, The Holiday. Why doesn't Jezebel write a piece on that nonsense?

lostinpost · 06/10/2017 17:27

I think it would be more appropriate if it was called "Luvvies Actually" Grin.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 06/10/2017 17:27

I knew this would be about Love Actually when I saw the thread title.

Awful film. Just awful.

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 17:28

Ive never seen the holiday all the way through, but the bit i did see had jack black drinking loads, then driving off!
Jude law is such a ham actor too.

Fluffybrain · 06/10/2017 17:40

I found the holiday not too bad. Nowhere near as bad as love actually. Home Alone is the best Xmas film ever.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 06/10/2017 17:44

I'm nominating Casablanca, Withnail and I and The Blues Bothers

Yawnfest

spankhurst · 06/10/2017 17:45

I hated it so much I turned it off. Utter crap.

BakerCandlestickmaker · 06/10/2017 17:49

I liked The Holiday as my expectations were low, I like Jack Black and I loved both houses!

The80sweregreat · 06/10/2017 17:51

The blues brothers is another overhyped film.

C619 · 06/10/2017 17:54

I don't get Casablanca.... so much hype, so so so boring.

Much rather watch Aliens.

pontiouspilates · 06/10/2017 17:55

One of the worst films I've ever seen. I genuinely have no idea why so many people love it so much!

rookiemere · 06/10/2017 17:55

I liked The Holiday Blush
