Rumours have been circulating about this disgusting man and his sleazy casting couch for years... He has offered a half-hearted apology, but seems rather smug about the fact that his family are supporting him.

AIBU to think his wife is misguided? What sort of example is she setting to her daughter? After all, this isn't a one-off - it is a pattern of serious abuse of women over decades.

user149 - that is horrific for you I am so sorry. I feel strongly that the people who collude and hide these things should be very strongly held to account. There will always be insane predatory monsters but when the "good" people of the world collude or keep silent we cant get anywhere.

another20 · 11/10/2017 21:15

"They should be named and shamed too." - they should be prosecuted - is this not akin to trafficking or pimping?

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 11/10/2017 21:18

I doubt it is trafficking or pimping. It is aiding an offender though. Not sure if they have that crime in USA.

another20 · 11/10/2017 21:19

What about his wife Georgina Chapman? Was she procured in this way? Would she have known? She defended him when the NYPD sting operation failed to press charges.

Alittlepotofrosie · 11/10/2017 21:22

Anyone who covered up for him or arranged these meetings is disgusting. But i understand why actresses who were affected by him, even a listers, said nothing. His word against theirs, and who is going to believe a mere woman?

HadronCollider · 11/10/2017 21:37

Just read this from Lea Seydoux in the guardian:

"The first time a director made an inappropriate comment to me, I was in my mid-20s. He was a director I really liked and respected. We were alone and he said to me: “I wish I could have sex with you, I wish I could fuck you.”
"He said it in a way that was half joking and half serious. I was very angry. I was trying to do my job and he made me very uncomfortable. He has slept with all of the actresses he filmed." That's just one director. She also mentions HW attempting to sexually assault her (his assistant also left her alone with himAngry) plus another director losing the plot when she refused his advances and yet another repeatedly filming a sex scene with her in again and again over days whilst appearing to be mentally getting off on it. That's at least 4 encounters by ONE actress. Plus it seems these men often get sex from (or rape) well known and admired actresses. Hence the silence arising from guilt and fear of blackmail.

So the film industry is institutionally sexually abusive. Full stop. I'd be suprised if there aren't men and children who have suffered too.

Makes me question other industries modelling? Music? How far reaching is it? And why has HW come out? He's surely pissed off someone on high. There must be others just as bad? Surely AJ etc know about other individuals? Just depressing.Sad

nauticant · 11/10/2017 21:45

Music?

The breathtaking thing is that it is documented that some of the mega-stars from the 60s and 70s had sex with children well under the age of consent. There are loads of reports, it's in books, it's all over. But no one is willing to do anything about it.

KrytensNanobots · 11/10/2017 21:51

I'd be suprised if there aren't men and children who have suffered too

There are, as Corey Feldman spoke up about how he and Corey Haim were abused when they were young Sad
Whoever did that needs bringing to justice too, poor mites.

Itsanicehotel · 11/10/2017 23:21

I agree that the good that will hopefully come from this is that victims of any other Hollywood stars or execs will feel more able to speak out. The same with the Saville nightmare. More victims came forward after he was exposed for the vile abuser he was, about other people in power who were abusing. At least Some have had to face the consequences and weinstein and any others who now come to light will also have to hopefully.

Riversleep · 11/10/2017 23:49

Miramax and the Weinstein company as a whole should be investigated. There seems to be a culture of abuse running through it. What type of person would actively facilitate abuse because they wanted to be a pa for Harvey Weinstein? What sort of moral compass must you have? And being willing to pay settlement after settlement as a type of business expense? Its horrifying and disgusting. I hope the people who did this are called to account too. I know Miramax have toured him but questions need to be asked about their culpability.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/10/2017 23:55

I think forced sex for job opportunities roles right down to basic normal jobs, solicitors, doctors, retail managers, office managers etc

Women are tragically easy to exploit.

Garlicansapphire · 12/10/2017 00:00

I dont think we should judge the assistants either - they were being coerced and bullied and assaulted too - I read somewhere that 16 of them have also logged their experiences of being assaulted by him.

Total abuse of power....

InigoTaran · 12/10/2017 00:07

Lea Seydoux was in Midnight in Paris...a Woody Allen film...

I know it's difficult, but I wish she had named the other directors she was referring to, I actually think the current climate is such that she would be listened to and hopefully others would come forward?

There's lots of other men being discussed on Twitter right now, think there's lots more to come sadly!

DarthMaiden · 12/10/2017 00:48

A key thing to take from this - it’s not just Hollywood.

Yes, it’s endemic there but this type of sexual manipulation of female staff happens in many industries.

There is still a huge issue that the majority of FTSE 100 companies are effectively masculine only clubs. Their investors and Boards are equally male dominated.

There is absolutely a culture within these enclaves of “what goes on in x stays in x” and where a female presence is token at best.

These jobs get appointed from within - they don’t get advertised - headhunters seek out (under direction) the next CEO/CFO etc its never an open playing field.

I know so many exceptional women who work just below “c” level and never get the opportunity to move up. The jobs go to less qualified, better “connected” men.

Then there is the harassment and intimidation. Don’t make a fuss or you won’t get x job. The down play of creepy blokes saying “that’s just how they are”.

Being the most senior person in a room but you still are expected to get the fucking coffee...

It’s everywhere - in every industry and it fucking sucks Angry

DarthMaiden · 12/10/2017 01:42

Pretty much sums it’s up.

This picture was taken today in LA - after he had supposedly volunteered for “sex addiction” treatment in Europe - entering the building of his lawyer.

Any signs of regret, humility or aspirations of becoming a “better person” shown here?

Or just another self indulgent, egotistical, sexual predator who still thinks he’s got a reputation and power to get away with it...

Excellent article re power dynamics of this

DarthMaiden · 12/10/2017 02:08

@InigoTaran excellent article

I’d suggest @MargaretTwatyer should read it.

HadronCollider · 12/10/2017 06:08

Brilliant article. That picture of WeinsteinAngry

ThePeanutGallery · 12/10/2017 06:10

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but apparently Lindsey Lohan put out a video in HW's defense. Very disturbing if you believe the rumors that her downward spiral started after a visit to his hotel room...Sad

HadronCollider · 12/10/2017 06:28

I hadn't heard that rumour. If its true then it means she likely took on the blame and reframed what happened as her having given consent or wanting itSad

Sliceofthecake · 12/10/2017 07:02

@DarthMaiden is right. The glass ceiling is still prevalent.

DH works in a male-centric industry but he has a lot of highly qualified females in his team. A team member was told (by the CEO) to organise the Annual Conference. DH knew that this was purely because she was a woman so he told the CEO this was not her job and he had to find someone else. Naturally, a PA ended up organising it.

Secondly, when talking to a school Dad at a party, Dad bemoaned the lack of women staying on in their jobs after children. He admitted that he hesitated to employ young women.

This boils down to shared child care and domestic chores. If men pulled their weight around the house and school run, more wome would continue with their careers. And companies need to realise this and give men more flexibility.

This is slightly moving off topic but it enforces the stereotype of male providers and female Totty.

InigoTaran · 12/10/2017 08:17

I wonder if stuff will come out about Quentin Tarantino, as he is another director Lea Seydoux worked with? I can just imagine him being like that with pretty young actresses, bleugh!

HadronCollider · 12/10/2017 08:22

It gets better: Rose Mcgowan has had her twitter account deleted. UnFuckingBelievable.

HadronCollider · 12/10/2017 08:23

I meant Suspended not deleted

Riversleep · 12/10/2017 08:24

I think sadly the reason why people didn't come forward is that it's so common that it's was just one of those things you had to do. It is so normalised that it was just another unpleasant experience amongst many. If every producer/ director you meet tries it on, maybe you become numb to how offensive and wrong it is until someone shines a light on it.
