Harvey Weinstein

Rumours have been circulating about this disgusting man and his sleazy casting couch for years... He has offered a half-hearted apology, but seems rather smug about the fact that his family are supporting him.

AIBU to think his wife is misguided? What sort of example is she setting to her daughter? After all, this isn't a one-off - it is a pattern of serious abuse of women over decades.

From that New Yorker article:

In an interview with the New York Post, he said, “I’ve got to deal with my personality, I’ve got to work on my temper, I have got to dig deep. I know a lot of people would like me to go into a facility, and I may well just do that—I will go anywhere I can learn more about myself.” Weinstein went on, “In the past I used to compliment people, and some took it as me being sexual, I won’t do that again.” In his statement to the Times, Weinstein claimed that he would “channel that anger” into a fight against the leadership of the National Rifle Association. He also said that it was not “coincidental” that he was organizing a foundation for women directors at the University of Southern California. “It will be named after my mom and I won’t disappoint her.”

The NRA? Way to deflect, you fucking, slimy, prick.

Andylion · 10/10/2017 18:26

Sorry for the mess of my post, above. I am so pissed off.

Getout21 · 10/10/2017 18:30

It also proves how many people did know (including the media) & surely it makes a mockery of the Academy Awards.

Want2bSupermum · 10/10/2017 18:32

margret after 10 years the prenup doesn't hold water. I would assume that the day after 10 years hits the divorce papers will arrive.

BulletFox · 10/10/2017 18:49

There's nothing wrong with him seeking treatment but it's nothing to do with him 'learning' about himself it's about learning not to act like that.

DarthMaiden · 10/10/2017 18:56

Paltrow and Jolie have now both levelled accusations at HW wrt advances he made to them when they were starting out in the business....

Want2bSupermum · 10/10/2017 19:25

Read the piece about Paltrow. Brad Pitt apparently had a word. At least he did something when told.

JessiCake · 10/10/2017 19:29

The Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth accusations, while at this point hardly surprising, do make me feel a bit confused about George Clooney's statement that he didn't know HW was anything other than a bit of a 'dog' who liked chasing women.

Gwyneth was going out with Brad Pitt at the time of her incident. Angelina was then married to Brad Pitt for many years after her own unspecified incident, during which time I would imagine she might have mentioned her reasons for refusing to work with HW.

So Brad Pitt knew two of the women in his life had been harrassed by HW but George Clooney, Brad Pitt's big buddy and producing partner, just thought HW was a bit of a 'dog'.

It's a fucking disgrace tbh. I've liked Clooney, Damon etc for years and felt they were, if occasionally preachy, at least trying to harness some of their fame and power for good causes.

Turns out that women being allowed to go about their business without being groped/harrassed/abused/attacked/raped ain't that important in their grand schemes.

I think Clooney looks like an idiot now and should probably have held off before releasing y'days' statement. It just doesn't hold water.

Terfing · 10/10/2017 19:48

Blind Gossip are saying that HW has loads of naked photos, videos, etc. are various actresses, which is why there is a lot of silence. People are worried that he will crack and release everything.

nauticant · 10/10/2017 20:05

Let's hope any blackmail type material HW might hold is now of little use. Any attempt to use it now being exposed would probably push him completely beyond the pale.

He'll still be clinging to the hope that a spell of sackcloth and ashes will get him a position of power at some point in the future.

GorgeousLadyOfWrangling · 10/10/2017 20:15

Jesus wept, no wonder so many women don't want to report: NYPD had the fucking evidence. What more did they need?
The reason why it is important that Gwyneth, Angelina and others speak out is to add their weight to collaborate the accounts from the numerous victims who people are still deriding. This piece of shit had a clear M.0.
Given Tina Fey's gag about the character Jenna Maroney not being scared of anyone ''I turned down Harvey Weinstein three times'' and Seth Macfarlane's Oscar nominees joke ''at least you five don't have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein anymore'' everyone knew he was a sex pest. Minimising that as him just being a dirty ''dog'' does make them all complicit.
I am disappointed in Michael Moore not saying anything as he claims to be an activist ffs. But pp are correct in saying HW won't be the first nor the last to have abused his power.

Getout21 · 10/10/2017 20:19

Just read that terfing, so gross.

Lizzzar · 10/10/2017 20:25

I am not at connected in Hollywood circles but I still thought there had been rumors surrounding him for ages. It is not quite believable that some very well connected people apparently knew nothing. Not sure why this us all coming out now, after a long history of this type of behavior, but if it is part of a new zero tolerance approach to harassment, can only be for the good.

Dapplegrey2 · 10/10/2017 20:27

I am also disappointed in Michael Moore not saying anything.

Olaf4fuxache · 10/10/2017 20:49

GC probably kept quiet until now because according to AGC he is just as bad, seriously psycho.quite a revolting story re him,RG and young boys.....

ReginaBlitzkreig · 10/10/2017 21:14

The NYT denies spiking the earlier Weinstein story and denies any approach by Damon. They say the author of the earlier piece had not stood the story up, hence it did not run.

Paltrow's position is interesting: she had a bad experience with Weinstein as we now know, but continued to work with him and took the Shakespeare in Love role from the original choice, Winona Ryder in circumstances that have been the subject of much comment in the years since...

ReginaBlitzkreig · 10/10/2017 21:23

All this stuff about Hollywood people not speaking out is also a good deflection from all the media outlets that didn't care to cover it, presumably for fear of being shut out of access to events and stars by Weinsten. Until the -liberal New York Times went back to the story and did it properly this time.

Don't forget the 2015 complaint about him to police did go public. It was open to any media organisation to do some digging. Even people on the other end of the political spectrum did not do so. Given what we know now about Fox News etc. we can assume that the reason for this was that so many had their own offences to cover up.

CoolCarrie · 10/10/2017 21:40

Maybe Paltrow will give back her undeserved oscar? Or there will be a statement on gloop from her? She can say what she wants now, but it's all too little, too late.

Of course they knew, they all knew, but money, The mighty dollar, is all powerful, the ego trips, free stuff, and the attention that comes with it must be very persistent and addictive.

Dapplegrey2 · 10/10/2017 21:43

CoolCarrie - very true about the power of the mighty dollar.......

DarthMaiden · 10/10/2017 21:48

My other concern about criticism of actresses speaking up now (the argument being they are now - and have been for some time - powerful enough to expose HW even if they weren’t at the time of any sexual abuse), is that it makes others less inclined to come forward.

What’s the point if all the response you get is “you should have done it sooner”. It’s just another form of victim blaming.

As more information gets published it’s clear there was a very real (and valid) fear of retribution and retaliation.

Equally some actresses/actors have taken action - albeit in private. AJ refusing to work with him and telling other women of her concerns, BP calling him out even as a young actor - so far he’s one of the few men coming out with any integrity - ET tearing a strip off him for his weight loss comments etc

The whole industry is corrupted by production companies whose overwhelmingly male executives feel that sexual favours (from men, women and in some cases children) are part of their pay package and “dues”.

My hope is that this opens the floodgates and forces Hollywood to clean up its act. I am skeptical this will happen though :-(

SausageCream · 10/10/2017 22:34

Sadly this isn't unique to HW.

southeastdweller · 10/10/2017 22:36

Ben Affleck's statement today has so obviously been written by a not that great P.R it's laughable.

DarthMaiden · 10/10/2017 22:38

What’s BA had to say?

DarthMaiden · 10/10/2017 22:39

Though I’m more interested in the statements from his brother to be honest....
