Harvey Weinstein

Rumours have been circulating about this disgusting man and his sleazy casting couch for years... He has offered a half-hearted apology, but seems rather smug about the fact that his family are supporting him.

AIBU to think his wife is misguided? What sort of example is she setting to her daughter? After all, this isn't a one-off - it is a pattern of serious abuse of women over decades.

@MargaretTwatyer

I’d agree with you wholeheartedly on your last post.

That said I still can’t agree with your stance on other actresses/actors. Part of the reason why people like HW get away with it is because they create an environment and culture that makes challenging them virtually impossible. I think you are over simplifying the choices some people had open to them wrt principles vs money/fame until the facts (as opposed to rumours) were in the public domain.

As I’ve said I’ll reserve my distain and ire for HW and his ilk plus the executives who employ them and who sanction covering up proven abuse and silencing victims (and potential whistle blowers) through lawsuits and coercion.

Getout21 · 10/10/2017 14:00

I would say social media is a good tool for "getting it out".

Remove the up & coming victims from the equation as they obviously don't have power. The Matt Damon's, J Laws of the world they could speak out. But as Margaret said they are actively "in bed" with him.

If it was child abuse should the stars still stay quiet? What is the price of looking the other way? Women & children are always going to be commodities in a world where money trumps everything.

DrSketchys · 10/10/2017 14:39

Getout it has happened to children

CaveMum · 10/10/2017 14:42

Interesting that Jessica Chastain has said she was "warned" about Weinstein and that "The stories were everywhere", in direct contradiction to Jennifer Lawrence and George Clooney.

CaveMum · 10/10/2017 14:45

DrSketchys I remember reading/hearing a story about a currently famous female singer (FW) getting her big break after having sex (unclear if it was consensual or not) with a now-deceased rock star (L).

CoolCarrie · 10/10/2017 14:49

It's interesting to see this all come up again now as I remember him being accused around 6/7 months ago, and it all went away. He is vile and know we now how Palthow got her oscar she didn't deserve , she posed in s & m gear for a magazine linked to him. Morals in Hollywood have always been lacking. Look at Jim Carey's behaviour, and Mel Gibson, to name just two

DrSketchys · 10/10/2017 14:52

Caveman the singer I'm talking about is a young man- who appears to be going through quite a few public battles of his own recently (drinks/drugs etc)

CoolCarrie · 10/10/2017 14:54

I bet he uses the sex addication excuse/cop out

CoolCarrie, he's already been talking about going into "therapy".

George Clooney calls on Democrats to return donations from Weinstein:

"Actor George Clooney in a new interview describes conservative criticism of Democrats associated with film producer Harvey Weintein as “a little pot and kettle,” noting the prior sexual harassment allegations levied against conservative figures like Roger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly.

“Yeah, that’s a little pot and kettle there, unfortunately. But I think that everything gets politicized these days. The reality is that this is a problem deeply ingrained in our society,” Clooney told The Daily Beast when asked about criticisms coming from the right in the days since a New York Times report that Weinstein has been accused of sexual harassment.

“It was something that was talked about a lot on the left with Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly, and Donald Trump, and it’s something that’s going to be talked about a lot on the right with Harvey Weinstein," Clooney added.

"I think that rather than politicize it, there should be talk on both sides about the really bad behavior by powerful men and the horrible acts they commit. It’s pretty crazy to me.”

Clooney also said he hopes politicians either give back or donate any funds from the film producer and former studio executive, a move multiple Democratic senators have vowed to make.

“If politicians knew these stories, I doubt they’d have been taking donations from him at the DNC [Democratic National Committee], and I hope that they will all give the money back or donate it to good causes,” Clooney said.

GorgeousLadyOfWrangling · 10/10/2017 15:25

I am surprised that Matt Damon's tale of the scorpion/frog hasn't been regurgitated (he once compared Harvey with a scorpion saying it's just his nature). Kevin Smith has tweeted but nada from Matt, Quentin or Michael Moore. The latter of course has a documentary out on Trump next year....you can guess who has bought the rights to it.

GorgeousLadyOfWrangling · 10/10/2017 15:39

Also Crown ought to strip him of his CBE

guilty100 · 10/10/2017 15:53

I'm finding this picking over people's reactions kind of pointless. I'm not defending those who haven't spoken. I'm saying that this is a far more minor issue than the structural one. (I'm also not taking lessons in feminism from fucking Breitbart, one of the most misogynist sites on the internet - remember the headling BIRTH CONTROL MAKES WOMEN UNATTRACTIVE AND CRAZY? Their work. Also THERE'S NO HIRING BIAS AGAINST WOMEN IN TECH, THEY JUST SUCK AT INTERVIEWS).

The fact that abuse on this scale could be perpetrated is a testament of how much of the power of this industry still lies in the hands of individual men, who have the power to make or break careers. That clearly creates a climate where the possibility for abuse of that power is not only rife, but likely. The same is true of other industries where power is highly concentrated.

What we need is more people at the top, and particularly more women with power. The only thing that can stop this is if there are channels that manufacture stars aren't laced with sexual harassment. That means more women, with more say, making decisions and setting the culture.

Absolutely.

Let’s remember we are dealing with an industry where sexual abuse is so ingrained and rife it even has is own moniker “the casting couch”, that is commonly used to provide a veneer of normalisation to its ongoing existence.

That’s not going to change until far more women have the power to “green light” movies and thus give real choices to actors about who they will and won’t work with.

DarthMaiden · 10/10/2017 16:10

Sorry first para was a quote from @guilty100 that should have been in bold.

MargaretTwatyer · 10/10/2017 16:35

Rosanna Arquette, Mira Sorvino and an Italian actress have come forward (the Italian alleging full rape).

MargaretTwatyer · 10/10/2017 16:37

I'm not sure having more women at or near the top would be helpful given that on this thread it appears many of them find it acceptable to turn a blind eye for their own enrichment.

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 10/10/2017 16:38

Yes more victims are coming out of the woodwork, I am glad they feel confident to finally come forward and hopefully get some justice but sad that there are more victims

hollyisalovelyname · 10/10/2017 16:50

Donna Karan Shock

guilty100 · 10/10/2017 17:17

Margaret - That's because power is too concentrated. What is needed is a less hierarchical, top-heavy structure, with more women at the top of it. The way things were there was clearly no accountability or transparency whatsoever.

Sexism - and all this is just a heinous manifestation of sexism - won't change magically until women are equally powerful. Stop blaming individuals and gossiping, and start looking at the systemic.

nauticant · 10/10/2017 17:42

The New Yorker has released a recording on its website of Weinstein attempting one of his sexual assaults:

www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/from-aggressive-overtures-to-sexual-assault-harvey-weinsteins-accusers-tell-their-stories

Scroll down to the recording. Suffice to say it is a revolting listen and is triggering.

DarthMaiden · 10/10/2017 18:16

Goodness that article is sobering.

I hope these women get the justice they deserve and he gets put on trial and convicted.

Andylion · 10/10/2017 18:19

I just listened to that clip, nauticant. That man is absolutely disgusting.

Getout21 · 10/10/2017 18:24

yuck 🤢
