To hate the laughing at "lower class" people on here?

I know it gets disguised as laughing at certain children's names, phrases, etc, but there is a lot of threads on MN that is really about laughing at poorer people. Hate it.

OP posts:
User843022 · 05/10/2017 17:52

'And now let's start a discussion on what kind of people wear clothes from Primark'
I have never seen that, just constant piss taking of Boden and sea salt.

TheGuffalo · 05/10/2017 17:56

I’ve never seen a post say “urgh that’s a bit middle class” in response to a name.

Hear common all the time though.

In fact I think mc is only ever used as an insult when it implies the poster is attempting to be middle class when’s clearly just a working class commoner

BarbaraofSevillle · 05/10/2017 18:13

Yanbu OP. There is an awful lot of snobbery on here about things that are overwhelmingly more popular amongst the working classes, such as touring caravans, tattoos, smoking, Asda, Argos, All Inclusive holidays to places like Benidorm, present hauls on Facebook, selling of home made crafts on Facebook, sitting in the front garden, certain names, certain popular UK holiday resorts like Blackpool and Skegness. It's so blatant.

PandorasXbox · 05/10/2017 18:17

People don’t say “ that’s so middle class “ but I’ve seen them refer to certain names as ‘snobby’ and ‘ up its own arse ‘ etc.

KERALA1 · 05/10/2017 18:17

Great this thread flushing out all the wfh solicitors glad it's not just me Grin

TheGuffalo · 05/10/2017 18:26

is sadly not uncommon for a poster suggesting a Polish name for her baby of Polish heritage to be told to either Anglicise the name or choose an English name because they are living in the UK.

This has been going on a long time in RL. Some people Asian committed do choose an English name for their children. It’s seen as a smart choice sadly, because in business English names can have more success. Things are getting better though ...

Yes and if the perfectly good English and frequently chosen by immigrants then gets associated with, gasp, immigrants it’s a no go for MN.

Oldie2017 · 05/10/2017 18:29

It's dreadful. I think it's when people are aspirational middle class and they feel insecure about their position so they get overly worried about being better than someone else.

KERALA1 · 05/10/2017 18:32

Though if you are planning on bringing your child up in England it may be a kindness to have it pointed out if the name doesn't really work here. Mil who is German wanted to call dh a really full on double barrelled hard to pronounce German name - he was brought up in a mono cultural English rural location. His dad's choice prevailed for which dh was very grateful.

HelenaDove · 05/10/2017 18:33

Re Eastenders Shock i had no idea they were doing that. I havent watched it for many years. Disgusting.

Oldie2017 · 05/10/2017 18:33

Looking back a bit on the thread I think most people write accurately about their salaries and lives and jobs. The teachers and academics have the usual moan. The solicitors you can see writing accurate posts on the legal threads - we tend to be who we say we are. In fact we now have special rules about our anonymous postings on the internet - oh dear - including we are not allowed anonymously to post anything denigratory of women, if people know we are solicitors - all very vague stuff. I wonder how many other groups on here have professional conduct rules controlling what we can and cannot say?

Golftee · 05/10/2017 18:36

I don't care what class people are. I just don't like people who look down on others. And who think they are better than anyone else.

Getout21 · 05/10/2017 18:41

Still reading the thread. I admit I would think Hmm to someone actively choosing the name Mercedes for their child however if I met one I would never judge them. According to MN my name is a no go area as hard to spell/read & one of my kids has a cutesy name. However I would never ever call my child a name in the top 10 as then it would be too common for me.

SabineUndine · 05/10/2017 18:51

YANBU. Ref recent post about use of the word ‘tea’.

BarbarianMum · 05/10/2017 18:53

Getout thinking Hmm is kind of a lot like judging. Do you think people choose Mercedes by mistake? I'm sure the entire Spanish speaking world value your input though.

littlemissangrypants · 05/10/2017 18:59

Getout21 - my middle name is Mercedes and I was teased very badly about it. Have cried more times than I can count about it. I no longer use my middle name on anything as it makes me feel so bad. The constant car jokes and being told I was nothing like my name as I was fucking hideous and not classy is not exactly good for the soul. I already had enough to deal with being a German in England so the Mercedes middle name just gave people another reason to bully me.
Both my sons have very boring and safe names so they never have to deal with that kind of crap.

Getout21 · 05/10/2017 19:13

I grew up in SW London & went to Catholic schools so fully aware of the Spanish connotations. If I met someone today who still chose it I would think hmm because of the current connotations.

As someone who grew up with a weird name with teachers who could never pronounce it, used to get asked if I was sure I spelt my name right (yes I was sure) & recently was laughed at by a hcp as they thought it was so weird (hers was weirder in my eyes) I couldn't care less. Still bitter that I couldn't buy it on a badge or pen though.

Getout21 · 05/10/2017 19:19

Not everyone is going to like your name, your child's name, your style of dress or hair, the way you decorate your house, etc. Who cares, do what makes you happy & what you like.

I wouldn't be seen dead in Boden but my friend who loves it wouldn't be seen dead in my feather coat (big bird). Life would be boring if everyone liked & looked the same.

bianglala · 05/10/2017 19:49

Laughing at Tippz as well. You sound bloody bitter.

I don't have to justify myself education wise or financially, but yes I do quite well financially thanks just like many on here. Sorry for your bitterness.

bianglala · 05/10/2017 19:52

I am foreign so never got what is chavvy what is posh. I do buy a lot of Boden because I think their designs are cute and the material is nice. I didn't realize people would sneer. Most of my work clothes are M&S because they are very affordable and look high quality. I don't laugh at people going into Primark, I love a bargain too! But I just can't wear Primark because I don't have the body. I think when you wear Primark which IMO uses lower quality material, you need to have a great body so you can get away with the cut and material. If I have a banging size 8 body I'd be off to Primark!

paxillin · 05/10/2017 19:54

Sorry to derail, but you have a feather coat, Getout21? Made from chicken fur? Bit like Bjork's swan dress?

Getout21 · 05/10/2017 20:06

This kind of thing, Topshop jobby. Actually don't know if chicken feathers or fake feathers!

To hate the laughing at "lower class" people on here?
paxillin · 05/10/2017 20:12

I quite like that, wonder if it would ring the class alarm on MN or in RL.

Getout21 · 05/10/2017 20:16

Thanks I love it! Well I expect some MNs will be WTF?! 🤣🤣

Getout21 · 05/10/2017 20:17

oh and I wasn't slagging off Boden as such, my friend wears nice things from there. It's just not me.

PortiaCastis · 05/10/2017 20:18

That's cool Get love it
