To be pissed off that Greggs vary regionally?

Why can't I get a greggs iced split in the home counties? And why are greggs bread puddings not avaliable in the south?

Are regional tastes so different that the whole uk can't enjoy a nasty but strangely alluring and edible iced split?

Now I understand Tottenham cake! At school we were served with something similar, called London Tart, it was sort of a pink egg custard with coloured sprinkles on. It was devoid of all taste, wobbled in a weird way, and simply increased our already sky high suspicion of London.

Riversleep · 04/10/2017 23:49

Is Tottenham cake not just plain sponge with pink icing on the top? I always got distracted by the coffee choux bun so never bought it because I thought it would be a bit boring. And I worked in Tottenham and everything!

cowgirlsareforever · 05/10/2017 00:03

Tottenham cake was invented by Quakers. It's a cheap, simple cake but very nice indeed. The icing is pink because the Tottenham Quakers had a Mulberry tree and so used it's berries to colour the icing.

It was one of my greatest disappointments that i found they dont sell cornbeef pasties in the nw after moving from newcastle Shock my oh always buys me one when hes away for work!

RhiannonOHara · 05/10/2017 10:04

Also love fresh morning rolls from Scotland. They have the optimum amount of crusty outside to soft inside.

Oh God Yes.

The ONLY thing for a hangover. Bought from the corner shop, along with square sausage and Irn Bru in a glass bottle. [nostalgic for Scotland]

QuestionableMouse · 05/10/2017 10:14

The Greggs in Canterbury sells Tottenham cake! (Or it did in May, at least.)

QuestionableMouse · 05/10/2017 10:22

They used to do a lovely soft subway roll with ham, cheese, mayo and tomato relish. It was really tasty. Now all you can get is those horrid crusty rolls that cut your mouth to bits!

ALemonyPea · 05/10/2017 10:49

Greggs used to do madeleines, not the French type ones, but a square of sponge soaked in raspberry jam and coated desiccated coconut. They were so lovey, I could easily eat a pack of 4 in one sitting. Wish they’d bring them back.

One Christmas they also did sweet mince pies topped with a Viennese whirl. I live in hope they’ll bring them back every year.

Buglife · 05/10/2017 10:59

I'm from the North East and the main things I miss from Greggs living down south are corned beef pasties and stotties. Also I am always happy when I see a Ham and pease pudding roll in a Newcastle Greggs, not that I like Pease Pudding, I'm just glad they are there really :)

LookingforMaryPoppins · 05/10/2017 17:26

When I went off to university, I was shocked to find that you couldn't buy Gypsy Tart! Bakers throughout Southampton looked at me oddly and had not the first clue what I was talking about.

Seems it's a Kent pudding!

Hotfootit · 05/10/2017 17:39

I had a Saturday job in Greggs in the West of Scotland many (many) years ago and they did something called a Tipsy Cake. It was fab. I've neve seen it since and I don't think even my old Greggs stock them now. I'd love the recipe if anyone knows what talking about!!!!

QueenofLouisiana · 05/10/2017 17:40

I want a stottie now (displaced Geordie).

TheNotSoGoodWife · 05/10/2017 17:50

Going back a few pages but there are definitely no Greggs in Cornwall according to google maps. Nearest one is in Plymouth Shock

maddiemookins16mum · 05/10/2017 17:54

You can get bread pudding in Greggs in Bromley.

Flozle · 05/10/2017 17:55

Greggs bought out our local bakers, who made the best cheese and onion pasties the world has ever known. Then they dicked about with them until they produced the vile specimens then have today...still makes me sad...

maddiemookins16mum · 05/10/2017 17:56

You can't move for Gypsy Tarts here in Kent, but they hurt my teeth as they're too sweet.

Flozle · 05/10/2017 17:57

zigzag

Do they not sell them frozen in Iceland?

raglansleeve · 05/10/2017 18:01

We're in Scotland where the Scotch pie is king Envy

SloanePeterson · 05/10/2017 18:08

About 4-5 year ago ago greggs did the most amazing cherry bakewells at Christmas time. Huge and a really thick layer of slightly gooey icing on top. I've mourned them ever since. Nothing will ever live up to that. Why would they stop making something so divine and give shelf space to sweaty pizza slices instead?? Incidentally if those bakewells are a regional thing I'll pay handsomely for someone to post me a dozen one

maddiemookins16mum · 05/10/2017 18:19

I have purchased many a Scotch pie in the Tesco at Glasgow airport and got them back to Kent in my hand luggage. A Bells Scotch pie with baked beans and homemade chios from a chip pan was my favourite tea when we went up to my Scottish granny's for our holiday. Then she'd give is a Scottish snowball for pudding and it was totally different from the snowballs we got down here.
In fact I think proper Scottish bakers shops are some of the best ever.
There are a couple of Percy Ingles (I think that's what they are called) in Lewisham and they always reminded me of Scottish bakers shops.

Hotfootit · 05/10/2017 18:21

Floellabumbugs - I see Tipsy Cakes have already been discussed. I will have to RTFT! (In my defence I usually do, but I'm not on wifi and I loved my job at Greggs - was my first job ever - so got carried away in my enthusiasm to post). 😁

mojojojo838 · 05/10/2017 18:24

@CancellyMcChequeface you took the words right out of my mouth! I bought myself a vegetable pastie a couple of years back and I took a bite and I was sick, because I don't like cheese. I emailed them to complain and they sent me a £3 voucher, but my point was the same. Not everyone likes cheese. It's not a vegetable pastie anymore, it's a cheese pastie, with vegetables in it. If I'd wanted a cheese pastie, I'd have bought one. Tasted and smelled like my teenage son's socks. Or how I'd imagine them to taste. If you get me.
And the saddest part is that I'd emailed them a few years back to ask if they were going to bring the veg pastie out in their frozen Iceland range and they said they had no plans to. They have now though, haven't they? The cheesy sock version Angry

flowergrrl77 · 05/10/2017 18:29

Well huh, no bread pudding in the south you say? I’m right on the coast and my local Greggs does a bread pudding :) you can see the sea when stood next to the Greggs is that far south! 😝

pollymere · 05/10/2017 18:35

We used to get bread pudding and splits in ours (south east), until they had a refit and started selling pizza by the slice and muffins. We get Tottenham Cake and London Cheesecake instead.

Silvertap · 05/10/2017 18:43

Macaroni pie with an irn Bri is the food of the gods.

Best hangover cure ever and the only way I survived 2 years of working (drinking) in Edinburgh
