Chocolate croissant-gate

I went to a bakery this morning to buy a chocolate croissant for my son, ahead of me was a mum and a little boy (6ish). He was messing about a bit and taking ages saying what he wanted so she waved me in front so I didn't have to wait.

I then asked for a chocolate croissant - the last one on the shelf - and the mum said 'oh you can't have that, what if my son decides he wants it'. What would you have said/done?

You could have done the stuff it all in your mouth and then give her a V sign thing like Vyvyan in the young ones does with the doughnut.

BellaNoche · 03/10/2017 17:17

typo..delete "would"....sorry ...eating last vanilla slice and typing with one hand... mwah ha ha

SusanTheGentle · 03/10/2017 17:19

RIGHT. Let's settle this one once and for all:

Chorley cake: flat, not very sweet, shortcrust pastry, currants.

Eccles cake: bit more volume, much more sugar, puff pastry, and tbf also filled with currants.

I mean yes they are practically indistinguishable but this is an IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE. Bloody southerners, etc. etc.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2017 17:22

And it's not a Danish pastry, it's a weinerbrød. I despair of the ignorance of MNers who can't Google 'what is Danish pastry in Danish' to look clever.

Umm... isn't it spelled wienerbrod (can't do Danish o thingy on my phone), MrsTerry? Grin

CPtart · 03/10/2017 17:27

A lifes lesson learnt. You snooze you lose!

fourquenelles · 03/10/2017 17:28

Lardy cake.

There, I have said it. Lardy cake. None of this chocolate croissant/pain au chocolat nonsense. Bet the little boy wouldn't be dithering if Lardy cake was the only option.

Willow2017 · 03/10/2017 17:29

Cream
Did you read ops post? it wasn't her kid messing about ffs!

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2017 17:29

Umm... isn't it spelled wienerbrod (can't do Danish o thingy on my phone), MrsTerry? Shhhhhhhh. I'm being all sophisticated and shit.

Iggi999 · 03/10/2017 17:30

I have never ever seen or heard of a chocolate croissant. I assumed OP must mean pain au chocolat.

The mother may have been a tosser but she may also have been at the end of her tether with a difficult wee one (mine can take five minutes to get a sentence out sometimes) and worrying he would dissolve on the floor if denied the chocolate one and she would have to go home and crack open the gin three hours early that night.

Eolian · 03/10/2017 17:30

Although why we'd want the Danish term when the Danish word itself means bread from Vienna (not from Denmark), who can say? Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2017 17:31

I give up.

Eolian · 03/10/2017 17:32

Oops - sorry. Please feel free to continue being all sophisticated (and shit). I'm jusf upset that my phone won't do the funny o thing. What's that called anyway? .

Eolian · 03/10/2017 17:33

*just, not jusf. Perhaps I'd better stick to typing English words for now.

mythbustinggov · 03/10/2017 17:34

You can do the Danish ø on your iPhone (at least, dunno about android or Windows) by keeping the o key pressed own then sliding sideways... However, doesn't wienerbrød translate as 'Viennese Bread"? So it's an Austrian Pastry really..

Tartyflette · 03/10/2017 17:35

I also prefer a pain au chocolat to a chocolate croissant but I don't really know why.

koalab you are so right a pain au chocolat is vastly superior, that yummy rectangle of croissant dough with one or two small strips of plain dark chocolate inside, vs the very-- sweet chocolate-spread filling in a chocolate croissant. (Sometimes even choc-hazelnut spread! )

Well, each to their own, of course but I'm with you on team pain au chocolat.

mythbustinggov · 03/10/2017 17:35

pressed down, not own. Bah.

PaintingOwls · 03/10/2017 17:37

Bloody ignorance

. Lovely when you get two strips of chocolate. Lidl ones are good.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2017 17:39

Cut and paste in my case @Eolian but @mythbustinggov has taught us all something. And taken the sophisticated crown from shark. Grin

Florene · 03/10/2017 17:39

I am delighted with this thread, as I have seen chocolate croissants previously, and bypassed them assuming that they were only so called due to the few chocolate sprinkles on the top.

Now I know they are also filled with gooey chocolatey deliciousness, I will be seeking them out Smile

Eolian · 03/10/2017 17:40

Cøøl - how did I miss that!

Cleanermaidcook · 03/10/2017 17:40

Can I add chocolate brioche into the mix?

Regarding op, she'd have received one of my withering looks and then ignored while I stuffed my face with the goodie.
