Chocolate croissant-gate

runningtostandstill · 03/10/2017 16:04

I went to a bakery this morning to buy a chocolate croissant for my son, ahead of me was a mum and a little boy (6ish). He was messing about a bit and taking ages saying what he wanted so she waved me in front so I didn't have to wait.

I then asked for a chocolate croissant - the last one on the shelf - and the mum said 'oh you can't have that, what if my son decides he wants it'. What would you have said/done?

koalab · 03/10/2017 16:32

This has reminded me I have last weeks bake off to watch. I'm off for a Biscuit and Brew.

You should have leant over and said "and I'll have that tray of them too while you're at it".
For the record I love pain au chocolat (hard chocolate) but can't stand chocolate croissant (gooey Nutella).

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/10/2017 16:34

Could have been an iced bun

You mean a pain glacé, surely? Unless the bakers was actually a Greggs Wink

koalab · 03/10/2017 16:34

According to mumsnet I'm odd because I pronounce the l in almond. I'm ok with it though.

littlechou · 03/10/2017 16:34

@catkind “pan oh shock oh larrrr”

Say it with your chest while twiddling your imaginary French moustache and no one will bat an eyelid

SemolinaSilkpaws · 03/10/2017 16:35

I will be first in the queue at the bakers tomorrow as having read this I must have a chocolate or even better an almond croissant tomorrow. I may well buy one of each because I am greedy that way. Woe betide any small child or adult who wants the last one if I am there first.

RhiannonOHara · 03/10/2017 16:35

I'd much rather have a chocolate croissant than an apricot Danish. Who wants that much solid fruit in a pastry?
I'd not say no to a pain aux raisins or an almond croissant though (in that order). But pain aux chocolat are just chocolate croissants with not enough chocolate in them.

Fekko · 03/10/2017 16:36

Reminds me of a T-shirt ds had a while ago with a drawing of a croissant (looked a bit like a fist) and the words 'I'll give you pain au chocolate!' on it. Always made me laugh.

catkind · 03/10/2017 16:36

Thanks @littlechou. Now I clearly need to go and have a pain au choc to test this out - the hardship Wink

JessicaEccles · 03/10/2017 16:38

When I moved to Birmingham I quickly learnt that you have to say PAN O RAISIN rather than any fancy French pronunciation. Otherwise the bakery has no idea what you are talking about.

But I have to confess, I would gladly wrestle any small child for the last chocolate croissant Wink

StealthPolarBear · 03/10/2017 16:38

"scampimom

I know my DM once wanted to buy I think a loaf of bread, and the shopkeeper wouldn't sell it to her because, "What if somebody else wants it?"
That's ridiculous!

existentialmoment · 03/10/2017 16:38

I'm sorry shark but that does come across as awfully 'oh what's a chocolate croissant, surely you mean a pain au chocolat. Look at me speaking French and being sooo sophisticated

It did. Which was funny because the poster clearly doesn't know the difference between a chocolate croissant and a pain au chocolat. Ouch!

I'd have laughed and bought it anyway. The daft arse.

nancy75 · 03/10/2017 16:39

IHaveBrilloHair

I'd have bought it and then stuffed it in my mouth in front of the kid, tbf, I don't like kids, especially whiney ones and their entitled parents.

Grin excellent, but only if you make a really big deal of it tasting really great

koalab · 03/10/2017 16:39

Oh that t-shirt would make a good Xmas present for my DP.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 03/10/2017 16:41

Grin
koalab · 03/10/2017 16:44

You meanie Fekko. I'm going to buy everything else on Amazon that only has one left, just in case you wanted it!

Fekko · 03/10/2017 16:46

(Hehhehheh - how do you know I don't make them and this is a marketing ploy?)

Italiangreyhound · 03/10/2017 16:47

Maybe if the mum was a bit more 'decide now' he would not expect to get first choice when holding the queue up! (He sounds exactly like my son!).

newtlover · 03/10/2017 16:47

it is difficult though isn't it, saying a french word in a french accent (or an approximation of a french accent) in the middle of an english sentence- even croissant is difficult. I feel like I have to retune my mouth mid sentence.

rightnowimpissed · 03/10/2017 16:48

“You snooze you lose kid”. They have to learn

koalab · 03/10/2017 16:49

Try saying a French word in England with a Welsh accent!
