Chocolate croissant-gate

runningtostandstill · 03/10/2017 16:04

I went to a bakery this morning to buy a chocolate croissant for my son, ahead of me was a mum and a little boy (6ish). He was messing about a bit and taking ages saying what he wanted so she waved me in front so I didn't have to wait.

I then asked for a chocolate croissant - the last one on the shelf - and the mum said 'oh you can't have that, what if my son decides he wants it'. What would you have said/done?

That's ridiculous! I would have laughed too.

kierenthecommunity · 03/10/2017 16:51

I’d have been tempted to say ‘well I’m doing you a favour, now he’s got one less choice to dither over’ Grin

Where does one buy these chocolate croissants? They sound awesome. Seen almond ones but not chocolate

koalab · 03/10/2017 16:54

Tesco do them.

Eolian · 03/10/2017 16:56

Grin at the smugness about 'idiots' calling a pain au chocolat a chocolate croissant. I think plenty of (non-idiot) people probably do this actually, maybe because they are unsure of how to pronounce 'pain au chocolat' in an acceptably correct but non-poncy way and are more familiar with the word croissant! Which is funny really because croissant is much harder for your average Brit to pronounce properly.

Anyway, YANBU to buy the aforementioned patisserie item, OP.

Evelynismyspyname · 03/10/2017 16:57

koala or a French word in Germany with an English accent - should I be trying to use a French accent or a German one? German, it turns out

amusedbush · 03/10/2017 16:57

Oh god, the whole "what's a chocolate croissant?" thing was so transparent and cringey.

In a (sort of) similar situation, my mum ordered a few things for lunch at the local bakery. The woman behind the counter dithered about so much that another employee started serving someone else, who ordered the last meat and potato pie - which my mum had already asked for but was yet to be put in a bag. Now, I think my mum WNBU when she spoke up about that.

However, if you haven't ordered it then it's fair game!

Katedotness1963 · 03/10/2017 16:58

Personally I prefer a ham and cheese croissant but my kids would be looking for a new mother if I didn't get chocolate ones too.

Evelynismyspyname · 03/10/2017 17:00

Our German baker always has "Schoko Croissant" and almond and vanilla ones, but never Pan au Courant. The chocolate croissants are good though, not over sweet or Nutella like.

Evelynismyspyname · 03/10/2017 17:01

*Pan au Chocolat (I'm not sure what that autocorrect means!)

morningtoncrescent62 · 03/10/2017 17:01

Baggit. Or wanna thae bug French breeds.

Phew, glad to see someone speaking my language on this thread.

I would have probably asked the child if he wanted the chocolate croissant and if he'd said yes I'd have let him have it. But it would be highly unlikely because I've never had completely lost the knack of talking to small children and they tend to stare mutely at me in wide-eyed horror if I ask them anything. So fairly safe there. I think the mum probably regretted waving you ahead, and I do feel a bit sorry for her in that situation.

Hersetta427 · 03/10/2017 17:01

They do lovely ones in Lidl, which taste identical to the ones they sell in pret a manger but for one third of the price !

Willow2017 · 03/10/2017 17:03

Almond croissants are the food of the gods..
Pain au chocolat are vile

And why on earth would you but buy something for your kid and make them share it with some random kid who can't decide what he wanted anyway ? He never even said he wanted the damm croissant! I would have said when he finally makes up his mind there are plenty other things to chose from. I am choosing this.

phoenix1973 · 03/10/2017 17:03

I'd have carried on. What if ickle pwecsiuss had not chosen the croissant.

paxillin · 03/10/2017 17:05

Sometimes you see a thread title and think "oooh, promising" and it actually is a great one. Thank you for sharing, OP. I bet the croissant pre-booker is still cringing at her embarrassing and unnecessary greed.

KrytensNanobots · 03/10/2017 17:07

What would I have done? Been totally gobsmacked and probably just looked at her blankly. Then still bought the croissant!
Her ds hadn't even said he wanted it. You can't tell others in front of you in the queue not to buy the last of something on the off chance you want it by the time it's your turn. Hmm
I have kids, I wouldn't dream of doing that. Talk about letting them become entitled/get their own way all the time!

Hersetta427 · 03/10/2017 17:07

You should have told her she should be thankful you were taking away an option - he therefore may be able to make a quicker decision.

You snooze, you lose kiddo.

SusanTheGentle · 03/10/2017 17:08

Je pense que vous will all find cette il est "Croissant Aux Chocolate", ACTUALLY, and you have to say "chocolate" in a cod french accent.

RiversrunWoodville · 03/10/2017 17:08

rightnowimpissed has it! Any small child farts about too long (I include mine in this!) misses out all is fair in love and chocolate

Creambun2 · 03/10/2017 17:09

Yabu for letting your kid piss about in a shop. Let me guess op you often use the term "little monkey"

outabout · 03/10/2017 17:10

Perhaps the young un ACTUALLY fancied a slice of plain brown wholemeal bread but his mother was attempting to rot his teeth. You have probably done him a favour!

mythbustinggov · 03/10/2017 17:12

If it had been the last anything in our local bakery the child would have gone wanting... they make heavenly chocolate bread on a Friday, it's wonderful. No chocolate croissant, though - I must ask if they have plans... (yes, the point of this post is to big them up, they are brilliant)

SurfingKitten · 03/10/2017 17:12

Nice! I thought some idiot was referring to a pain au chocolat!

Far better to be that idiot than a pretentious twat on an online forum!

CryingMessFFS · 03/10/2017 17:12

Anyone else really want a chocolate croissant now? Or a pain au chocolat, either one is good!

BellaNoche · 03/10/2017 17:14

By heck.... all this panning and chocolatting....
Thank goodness this thread was not about the last Chorley Cake would .... or there might have been a rush of "surely you mean an Eccles Cake"....

but then again....perhaps not...

Mollie85 · 03/10/2017 17:16

What about a torsade? A lovely twisty chocolate custard affair ...
