Chocolate croissant-gate

I went to a bakery this morning to buy a chocolate croissant for my son, ahead of me was a mum and a little boy (6ish). He was messing about a bit and taking ages saying what he wanted so she waved me in front so I didn't have to wait.

I then asked for a chocolate croissant - the last one on the shelf - and the mum said 'oh you can't have that, what if my son decides he wants it'. What would you have said/done?

This reminds me of a time when I went to Sainsburys local to buy some croissants for breakfast. FIL was over from Australia. I took the last 4 from the tray and went to pay at the self service checkout. A guy then came over me and said to me ' I hope you enjoy your croissants'. Not in a nice way. Not sure I'd ever get that aggressive over a pastry. Particularly as a new tray was probably only a minute away.

What a twat, Twodogs

Does that mean none of us can buy enough of what we want for a meal in case somebody else fancies the same stuff?

Twodogsandahooch · 04/10/2017 21:41

I know. Would have understood if I had taken 20. Or all the pain au chocolat too!

SherbrookeFosterer · 04/10/2017 22:09

Buy it, cut it in half and give a half to each boy.

You may become the founder of a life long friendship!

SherbrookeFosterer · 04/10/2017 22:16

DiegoMadonna: Do you mean an "ensaimada"?

They are from Mallorca.

The filling can be made with apple or apricot, and always have raisins.

The perfect breakfast/elevenses with milky coffee!

You snooze you lose !

mythbustinggov · 04/10/2017 23:20

Two things. Chocolate in bread should really involve De Ruijter Dark Chocolate Sprinkles and really freash French baguette -

and, because of this thread, I had a Greggs Apple Danish today and they've change the recipe - it was some extruded pastry monstrosity, with only the industrial apple filling the same. And no cream-filled option (which I was really after) available. I am affronted!

SingaSong12 · 04/10/2017 23:42

I’d have gone ahead and bought it.

How about a chocolate twist- no idea of provenance but quite like the ones in Cafe Nero.

AcademicOwl · 04/10/2017 23:48

Ensaimadas are the perfect example of why lard in sugary pastry goods is an excellent breakfast choice.
I've never had one with raisins in (I've been eating them for 40 plus years!).
But I have had several giant chocolate filled ones for birthdays.
Oh Yes. Chocolate and sugar and dough made with lard.
And I'd have asked if he wanted the chocolate croissant and given it to him if he did. Because life's too short to inflict crappy stress on mum and dithery child, who is, y'know, a child.

Bloodybridget · 04/10/2017 23:50

Damn. I don't even like pain au chocolat that much, but am drooling for one now.

AcademicOwl · 04/10/2017 23:50

Ooh. And you can have something called angel hair in an ensaimada. I think it's jamified pumpkin of some kind. It's quite nice, but I just love the idea of an angel popping some lovely hair in a cake...

This reminds me of the story DH told me last week. On the bus home a mum told her DS (also about 6ish) that he could press the button to tell the driver to stop at the next stop. Well, DH couldn't just stand there and let that happen. So he pressed it first. Wasn't even his stop.

Cheeky whatsit

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 05/10/2017 06:02

I have never hated being coeliac more.

Reading this entire thread has been torture (funny torture though, especially when you uncultured swine may have been gasp confusing pain aux chocolat with chocolate croissants Shock Grin )

Kofa · 05/10/2017 06:20

In Italy it is a cornetto not a croissant. They are similar but not the same. Cornettos are less buttery and lighter and you can get them plain or with chocolate, crema or jam. Wholegrain with honey is also delicious.

Unfortunately I am on the same camp as Ovaries and haven't been able to beat one for years. You can get some decent GF ones in Italy bit they are not quite the same ☹

Kokeshi, you legend!! I LOVE Victoria Wood!!! Grew up watching her comedy & the sketches with her & Julie Walters together are comedy gold. A double-act of Epic proportions to rival The Two Ronnies, Del Boy & Rodders, etc. & yet never really described as such.

So sad she's gone & reckon Julie feels like she's missing a limb.

AhhhhThatsBass · 05/10/2017 11:29

According to a French colleague of mine, in some areas of France a pain au chocolat is called a chocolatine. I had no idea.
Anyway OP, despite most people hijacking your thread, I'm glad you didn't give in over the chocolate croissant (or was it actually a pain au chocolate, I didn't read the full thread, sorry), even if they did come out with a fresh batch immediately thereafter. Once I saw the fresh tray, I'd have cordially offered the kid the old one and gone for one of the newer ones, I love when they are slightly warm and melt in the mouth.

Floellabumbags · 05/10/2017 16:12

I had a dream about a disappointing pain au chocolat last night. I woke up still feeling underwhelmed.

bemusedmoose · 05/10/2017 16:24

Tell her entitled little shit to suck it up while i eat it in front of them....

Of course in my head! (maybe 🤣)

Seriously - she let you go ahead so tough. He wanted it so much he should have picked it and not faffed - you dont faff over noms - you snooze you loose!

Evelynismyspyname · 05/10/2017 16:44

bemused entitled little shit? Noms? Really?

Latenightreader · 05/10/2017 21:19

Delighted to hear that bread pudding is more widely known than I'd realised - it deserves to be enjoyed!
