In the super market today and heard a mum shout "beige" to her daughter...no joke! At first I thought I had misheard Paige...but no, definitely beige.

Got me thinking... what are the worst names you have come across?

Mabel / Brogan / Oceane / Twig/ Taylor / Kayleigh / Daytona /Ashleigh / Chelsea / Chelci are my least favourite names. I think as more and more people look for an unusual name to make their child stand out, the result is that those who actually stand out are the tried and tested old fashioned type names.

Gwencooper81 · 02/10/2017 18:17

So to laugh at the 'stupid' name Precious ( for example) isn't racist? I'm genuinely asking.. its a common African name ( and that of my eldest very good friend). People mock IRL all the time, are they not being racist them?

Oh and I've known a few Virginia's....I know it's a valid name, but just can't get my head round someone being called that.

Fekko · 02/10/2017 18:20

Why? It was originally a roman name.

qumquat · 02/10/2017 18:20

Names like Precious, Princess, Heaven, Favour, Comfort etc. are very normal East African names. I appreciate if you don't know that you might find them amusing as they sound strange at first, but once you are aware then it does seem racist.

qumquat · 02/10/2017 18:21

I mean west African. They may be common in other parts of Africa too but I don't know.

Fekko · 02/10/2017 18:23

I don't think it's racist.

I know a woman whose name means 'poo wee' in a certain language, and obviously causes a fair bit of amusement. It's not racist to find a name - a foreign name - odd or amusing.

MascaraWanda · 02/10/2017 18:23

Diamanté and Merlin. Confused

Fekko · 02/10/2017 18:24

Merlin - that's a wizard name!

Gwencooper81 · 02/10/2017 18:25

Thank you Fekko. I was genuinely asking. Not being goady so thank you. Qumquat, thank you as well, glad it's not just my mind it's crossed.

Butkin1 · 02/10/2017 18:26

Thanks for the back up ThankYoutellmeImbonkers.

I am quite irritated that DaemonPantalaemon has said I'm a liar. I've been on this site for 14 years (since DD was born) and nobody's said that to me before.

What I said was an absolute truth - not funny but surely interesting in the context of this thread. I've worked all over the world and have worked with a Hong Kong based company for 20+ years. Many of the people I work with have unusual names. The two girls I mentioned before came over to England in July and I get to spend a week with them. They realise that their English names are a bit weird to us but they like them and that's all that matters !

TabbyMumz · 02/10/2017 18:32

Fekko...Virgin-ia

NeopreneMermaid · 02/10/2017 18:34

I don't think I am being sneery or nasty in thinking this is the worst name I have ever heard. My friend went to a posh local girls' school with a girl called...

Hitler.

She went by the nickname Hilly.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 02/10/2017 18:34

There’s a fair few names I’m pocketing for if we have another baby thanks to this thread

Elowen
Magnus
Artemis

GORGEOUS names!!

Worriedaboutboy · 02/10/2017 18:35

I've heard:
Astra
Beyonce, while out shopping
Oakley

NameChangeFamousFolk · 02/10/2017 18:38

Merlin

I know an 80-odd year old, v posh female Merlin.

PlainOldJosephineMary · 02/10/2017 18:38

Was served in a chain restaurant in the U.K. by a lady called Obi-Wan. I was rude enough to ask her if that was her real name. Her reply was "you have to love your parents. You don't have to like them"

TabbyMumz · 02/10/2017 18:42

Someone on the news just now, called Caryl. Presume it's a trendier version of Carol.

HoneyBeeMum1 · 02/10/2017 18:43

I agree it is unkind to express dislike of a child's name, because it is 'chavvy' or you do not like the sound of it.

However, some names will inevitably cause comment and parents are wise to take account of that before naming their child.

For example, my son had a brief romance with a girl named Salome. A beautiful name, (and a lovely girl) but its unfortunate connotations would make most parents understandably reluctant to use it.

BigFatGoalie · 02/10/2017 18:47

I know a little girl called Vanilla.
Also a boy called Maximus.

MsJuniper · 02/10/2017 18:48

Tabby Caryl is a perfectly fine name that's been around a long time, for example the brilliant playwright Caryl Churchill, b. 1938.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caryl_Churchill

graziemille · 02/10/2017 18:52

I know someone called Heaven-Leigh Grin

HipppaHey · 02/10/2017 18:58

I've head someone calling for Renesmee on a bus!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 02/10/2017 19:02

Caryl churchills top girls was pretty seminal for m!
