Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

Do you think most people live in dirty unkempt houses/flats nowadays?? According to TV and excessive hoarders and those who think housework is a waste of time and the amount of cars on the roads at the weekend when do they get their housework done?? When I've had workmen in and I apologise for anything that isn't quite in order they respond by saying that I need** to see some of the filth they have to work in?? Is that true, are we becoming bone idle?? At least when people put little decorations on show they are proud of their homes?

coulditbeforever · 02/10/2017 19:19

And velvet trousers, 🙈, just no, it's all wrong, velvet curtains remind me of the stage curtains in the main hall at school, no great memories there!

MiddlingMum · 02/10/2017 19:22

I can't think of anything in our house which would be considered trendy Grin

Dormez · 02/10/2017 19:26

How weird to care. Everyone has their own taste, live and let live.

greentea4me · 02/10/2017 19:32

Daphne22 no I think a lot of people clean too much, bleach everything etc. which is really bad for you, and yes, a waste of time!

Agree with everyone about grey walls. Absolutely hideous and completely out of fashion now. Ditto crushed velvet sofas and metro tiles.

limecordial · 02/10/2017 19:33

I hate most of the things you have all mentioned but I do like shutters and metro tiles (sorry) and some shades of grey (though in moderation rather than as a scheme for an entire house)

There is a BIG difference between velvet sofas and crushed velvet sofas.

Steaksauce · 02/10/2017 19:36

I've just thought of something else that makes me think "what the heck?"; artfully arranged logs in an alcove or even fireplace, all the same length and diameter, a sort of log feature wall area.

Oh god yes! Seeing those always freaks me out as I just think how many spiders must be living in there 😱

MummyInHeel · 02/10/2017 19:37

Those with twigs and grey and sayings -- you've taken time to make your home cosy. Who cares what others think? I'd sooner come to a warm home than one of someone who judges people on wicker hearts

TheFirstMrsDV · 02/10/2017 19:39

I have a theory that the more "love" and "laugh" signs etc there are in a house the less there actually is
I agree.
The people I know with the most 'In this house we laugh, love....', 'the day my world stood still' etc signs are the most selfish articles you will ever meet.
Their kids might have rooms full of brand new furniture and matching duvets but they are never put first and live in chaos as their parents lurch from one massive drama to another.

FloofyDoof · 02/10/2017 19:43

I quite like a bit of crushed velvet. I have just bought some black crushed velvet leggings to wear with biker boots/DMs and oversized shirts. I'm a short fat bird with not fat legs, I think they look ok.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/10/2017 19:44

Bluntness, what on earth is wrong with shelves of paperbacks? They'd never put me off buying any property!

Books are for reading, not a design statement or for looking 'tasteful'.

ktp100 · 02/10/2017 19:45

The word sticker things are bloody awful! And why on earth would anyone need the word BATH by the bath?!!! I mean, wtf?!!!

TheFirstMrsDV · 02/10/2017 19:48

Things with words on make me irrationally angry.
I hate to be told what to do by a plate with PASTA written on it. If I want to eat a sandwich of it I bloody will.

You could have a houseful of labeled possessions now. All of them telling you what they are called or what they are for.

PickAChew · 02/10/2017 19:49

This one seriously disappointed me when it came on Rightmove. There's the odd lovely piece of furniture in there, but apart from the odd "pop" of colour it's so monochrome and shiny. Not at all what I was expecting (and that staircase is bloody terrifying!)

woodhill · 02/10/2017 19:51

KP probably cheaper to put in

FloofyDoof · 02/10/2017 19:55

I agree about the open plan places. My sitting room and kitchen are one long-ish still kinda small room and I bloody hate it. Can't do laundry or use the dryer if you want to watch TV because you can't hear it, everything smells of cooking, you can't leave the washing up until later because it's in the sodding room and you can see it. Can't listen to music while you're cooking because nobody can use the sitting room. I fucking hate it! I'd love a kitchen with a door.

Bluntness100 · 02/10/2017 19:56

They'd never put me off buying any property!

Some folks can’t see past clutter though when buying. It wouldn’t put me off but t could put many others off if the room can’t take it and it looks crap. It really depends as said.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 02/10/2017 19:59

Pick hahaha I often have to run down the stairs, at speed, in my fluffy socks, when the postman/milkman/parcel person comes a knocking, before they sod off. I wouldn’t even manage it once in that house before I died a horrible and messy death! Grin

PickAChew · 02/10/2017 19:59

The house we're buying has one of those tiny TV fireplaces. Thankfully it'll be easy enough to remove - once we've ascertained that the heating actually gets the house warm in winter!

I did see a house with an entire wall of books in the study. Most impressive collection of everything from paperbacks to journals. The concrete cliff down to the back yard is what put us off the place but neither that nor the books has dissuaded someone else from making an offer.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 02/10/2017 20:01

I think "Coffee" and "Tea" pots next to the kettle are acceptable MrsDV.

Personally I'm happy if my house looks tidy and clean and all the washing up is put away.

PickAChew · 02/10/2017 20:02

Just noticed that house has that grey velvet sofa in it!

NoMapOfMyHead · 02/10/2017 20:04

bluntness I agree. I think it's a tad pretentious to have novels in particular on display. Why?!

EdinburghMummy22 · 02/10/2017 20:10

Well said

Wally10 · 02/10/2017 20:14

I am in a new build...everything is white....like waking up in intensive care every day......I dream about the Dulux colour chart....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2017 20:15

There's a hideous word art canvas block in our local cheap card shop that says
'Falling in love is like taking a drink of hot chocolate before its cool enough. Hurts at first but then keeps you cosy all night'

  1. No it fucking isn't.
  2. Falling in love does not leave you with sandpaper tongue (unless there's some questionable hygiene issues)
  3. Hot chocolate doesn't keep you warm all night.
  4. It's hardly a snappily written sentiment is it??

Seriously, who buys this rubbish? I can sort of understand the poignant, well articulated 'word art' although they aren't my taste. But this thing is like a badly written essay.

Also hate anything minion, Winnie the Pooh quotes, sparkly.

I do think there are some really nice, mass produced homewares out there and in the right context they can look amazing and expensive. There's just no need for the tat. As a rule of thumb I tend to avoid anything with writing on it, as the quality of the font and the written content is a huge giveaway as to the cost.
