To hate these current home trends...

Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

My personal dislike nowadays are those terraced houses that have had the kitchens extended, some into the side return, and bifold doors fitted into the back wall. They are left with a completely characterless white cube, which doesn't suit the house.

pussinhavaianas · 02/10/2017 20:16

I feel the exact same - and yes, the damn grey urgh, tired of seeing grey doors too. Going to be hilarious when that goes out of fashion. I dont think that any of these trends are particularly distasteful, its the popularity that I find cringy, there seems to be zero originality amongst the population- every other home looks like something out of the next home catalogue.

IrritatedUser1960 · 02/10/2017 20:18

It's just personal preference, I hate all this "light, bright and airy" bollox with mirrors everywhere, not if you're over fifty mate, dingy rooms will do me just fine thanks you.
Mt dining room has dark wallpaper with candles everywhere and almost zero" natural light" which suits me just fine.
Any feature wall featuring lairy wallpaper - feature walls full stop.
Glass and chrome dining tables.
B&Q or argos laminate shelving/furnishing - amazing natural wood products can be found on a budget on freegle, ebay or charity shops, half the cost, can be wonderful with a bit of polishing, reburbishing.
Bloody messages all over the house. I know it's a bath I don't need stupid lettering to remind me - I haven't got alzheimers yet.
Cheap metal wall art. have a bit more imagination. I'd rather create something unique with stencils.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2017 20:19

Also, those smashed mirrors on the staircases- I get the heeby-Jeebies when I see them they make my toes curl, I can't help but imagine the dc running across them and there being a tiny bit not grouted properly in. All those sharp edges. They would seriously devalue a property for me, I would never buy a house where someone had done that.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 02/10/2017 20:21

Ha ha AverageBear. That reminds me of "Buying a car is like making lurrve to a beaudiful woman.."

A whole wall of books is amazing. It's tempting to see if it's actually a secret revolving door like it always was on Scooby Doo.

yoyoyoy · 02/10/2017 20:24

In no particular order my pet decorating hates are

Laminate flooring -cold and slippery for adults ,children and pets
Open plan living areas - all your mess and noise in one room -aargh
Shiny kitchens -do people polish them every day or do they have maids to do that for them
Magnolia paint = Homes Under The Hammer
New England style cladding every bloody where on new builds and renos around here- repeat after me - We are not in New England ,they will look awful very quickly in the UK
Steel kitchens - looks like behind the scenes at McDonalds not someones home
Sparkly anything -tackorama!

My house is furnished with second hand ,Ikea ,Gumtree and an eclectic mix of 30 years worth of junk which I should thin out but can't as it all has memories for me ,style gurus out there would probably have apoplexy if they saw it but it's my home and I like it like that so each to their own and if people like any of my pet hates in their own homes good luck to them

LillianGish · 02/10/2017 20:25

Not sure you can just write off grey - there are so many different shades. I think grey paint is actually the new magnolia - a great neutral that goes with everything. I also disagree that it is cold - in fact I think in northern light it is much warmer than white. Grey everything is dingy of course, but nothing wrong with a few grey walls. Personally I’m a bit sick of everyone in London (and elsewhere for all I know) knocking down all the walls in their ground floor to make a massive open-plan kitchen/living room with bifold doors out onto a deck. Quite nice when set up for the Facebook photos with nothing out and a few strategically placed orchids, but usually a tip in real life and no doors to close on the chaos to sit in tranquillity in another room. Likewise gardens converted into parking spaces. Plantation shutters are just a more expensive version of Venetian blinds. Words on walls are a passing phase surely and can easily be removed (actually one of the things that sold me my apartment here in Paris was that the front door opened to the word Hello spelled out on the wall - I took it as a sign, which of course it was 😁) I’ve never actually seen a crushed velvet sofa or curtains in real life.

beltanelove · 02/10/2017 20:27

Copper. I fucking hate copper being everywhere. One piece fine, or an old copper sink but it's industrial style copper everything. Oh and terrariums

Aderyn17 · 02/10/2017 20:29

Bluntness, you'd hate my house Grin. I have a whole wall of bookshelves with all my books crammed on, along with photo frames and clay pots the kids made at school and mils ashes that we hsvrn't decided what to do with!

I also have laminate flooring and a leather sofa and photos of my kids on the wall and a fake canvas pic from argos and fairy lights and I give not a fuck if it isn't 'tasteful' Wink

swisspookie · 02/10/2017 20:29

Pickachew, that rightmove property, aside from the outside main aspect, is everything I detest. Even if you look past the decor, that ugly bifold crap they've shoved on the side is especially awful. However, someone must like it to have gone to all the bother!

yoyoyoy · 02/10/2017 20:30

Damn - forgot bloody bifold doors - what a waste of a whole wall on the off chance that we may actually have some decent hot and non windy weather for opening them in, which in our climate is probably about 2 days a year .

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 02/10/2017 20:30

Whilst I don't like any of these things I am grateful that I have a fulfilling enough life not to care how other people decorate their home...

Bluntness100 · 02/10/2017 20:32

To be fair I’d pick a soft warm grey over sterile white any day of the week. Sitting there like you’re in the icu is few people’s idea of a warm welcoming home.

mumoffour1716154 · 02/10/2017 20:32

Just googled metro tiles, did not know what they were Hmm. Really like them for the bathroom

ShotsFired · 02/10/2017 20:33

@Katherine2626 Take out those wardrobes and then see what a lovely big bedroom this is.' And then what? Throw your clothes on the floor?

GrinGrinGrin that line really made me chuckle! I can just picture the face you'd be pulling as you said it!

BagelGoesWalking · 02/10/2017 20:33

Irritated “not if you're over fifty mate, dingy rooms will do me just fine thanks you.*”

Exactly! And I also dislike open plan. When OH is constantly on laptop listening to fucking sport & loud commentary, I love being able to close 2 doors to shut out sound.

Friend’s house is kitchen, computer table, tv/PlayStation etc all in one room. It would drive me mad to live like that. I need my boltholes.

mumoffour1716154 · 02/10/2017 20:34

@IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday love this room

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 02/10/2017 20:35

Whilst I don't like any of these things I am grateful that I have a fulfilling enough life not to care how other people decorate their home

Grin how wonderful for you. Because yes, everyone here with an opinion on shite decor doesn't have a fulfilling life. ODFOD

ShotsFired · 02/10/2017 20:35

@yoyoyoy just as I was getting to the end of the thread I started thinking "ooh bi-sodding-fold doors"!

If one more person tells me how thy bring the outside in or some equally naff shite.... (99% of them are going to fail soon too- they are a total bugger for house movement causing them to stick in their rails. And then you end up with a massive useless window)

Bluntness100 · 02/10/2017 20:36

Bluntness, you'd hate my house

Maybe not, I have fairy lights wrapped round tall plants in most corners, I love them, and a whole wall of books sounds good. I wouldn’t be overly keen on the laminate though and if the sofa was shiny and slippy I wouldn’t be keen, but you would prob hate mine, so it’s fair,,😂

ChickenVindaloo2 · 02/10/2017 20:37

I hate when people have all their pots, pans and utensils hanging in the kitchen. Everything must get covered in greasy dust.

Kitchen islands. Open plan.

Clutter. Chuck out those effing books you are never going to reread, especially if you never dust them!

Those sofas without a proper back - where the back is just a line of cushions.

Stuff which is so obviously "I've been on lots of exotic trips - just look at my skull/ashtray made from ancient indian bones /moroccan flying carpet"

My guilty pleasure - when I moved into my flat, there was just a square hole where the fire had been removed. I have filled it with pebbles. In my defence, I have collected them all myself from beaches, I didn't just buy a bag of ikea pebbles.

I can never make up my mind whether I do or don't like:

  • seaside bathrooms
  • ironic glittery toilet seats
ShotsFired · 02/10/2017 20:38

I think the overriding thing is that every single person who does grey/glitter/fablon/broken mirror/artsy words etc does it in the grave misapprehension that they are being so trendy and individual and one-off.

I bet they'd have mason jars at a wedding too. Equally yooneeq.

RoseWhiteTips · 02/10/2017 20:40

So literature is pretentious and should not be on display? Where on earth did that bizarre idea come from?

ChickenVindaloo2 · 02/10/2017 20:46

I bet you all the folk who have Tolstoy on display in their bookcases have the whole of 50 shades/Mills & Boon on their kindle!! Grin

IrianOfW · 02/10/2017 20:46

I think the whole idea of trends in house decor is stupid. Is it really OK to chuck away a load of stuff every few years because the trend has changed? Changing wall colours is one thing but the amount of fiddly diddly bits and pieces you can buy to go with the walls is just daft. Not to mention furniture.

Or maybe I'm just old...
