Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

I have a theory that the more "love" and "laugh" signs etc there are in a house the less there actually is.

Someonessnackbitch · 02/10/2017 17:59

YESSSS! Especially those bloody 'love home' etc in writing

beaubeau11 · 02/10/2017 18:06

I find this funny as I have a beautiful mauve crushed velvet sofa,I also have a few signs around the house and a tasteful plaque with our family's names. I have high gloss kitchen cupboards and cream wooden blinds that are the length of the Patio door I have in my opinion very good taste it would be interesting to see what certain people class as acceptable lol. Send the pics in please Grin

Screwinthetuna · 02/10/2017 18:11

That house is gorgeous. Bland decor but could do so much with the house itself!
I'm actually a fan of the twig hearts (and driftwood) but can't stand feature walls, glitter and the crushed velvet.

Most of all, I hate when people have a colour 'theme' such as teal and buy all new plant pots/rugs/picture frames in the same teal...and don't forget the teal Xmas tree baubles.

Strongmummy · 02/10/2017 18:11

You all sound like dicks, but I think you know that already.

Lozz22 · 02/10/2017 18:11

I love the colour grey and absolutely love farrow and balls elephants breath colour! It has nice warm hues to it but unfortunately in my already dark and dingy flat the colour just isn't any good because there's not much natural light to pull the warmer shades out. That grey velvet settee is gorgeous although if had it I would be going round smoothing it all out so it all went in the same direction! I have the twig hearts and quote plaques on my wall. The only thing I don't have is the kitchen/bath wooden blocks! Soon change that when I finally get my new kitchen and bathroom installed! That was supposed to be now but it's been put on the back burner after my husbands taxi was involved in a crash, (he wasn't driving it. His driver was) has now been written off and he's off work irritating the shit out of me for about the next 4 weeks until he gets his new car! Kill me now!!! The only thing I don't have is the wall lettering and that's only because most of them are romantic and slushy and they don't have ones that say 'I must have been off my rocker the day I got married'!!

Grin and what do you think you sound like with that lovely statement?

DagenhamRoundhouse · 02/10/2017 18:16

Crushed velvet is what 70's rockers wore on stage!

Jiggy17 · 02/10/2017 18:19

Actually grey is lovely, I've my house painted in it, before it came the 'in' colour. Just like there lots of shades of any colour - there are 'warm grey' and cooler greys - just like there is with purple etc. Different tastes - doesn't mean it's 'shite' - lot of nasty people on these forums!

You are only being reasonable if someone is forcing you to have those things in your house. If not you are just being a bit of a dick, airing these opinions with close friends is one thing but on a public forum it is pretty ignorant.

monkeysaymonkeydo · 02/10/2017 18:39

I love grey and our new kitchen will be grey but I do agree that the 'love, live, laugh' signs can do one. Just like those annoying motivational quotes people post on f.book. I also hate when a couple have loads of 'look how much we love each other' stuff ie hearts, loads of cheesey photos, wedding memorabilia egg around. I get it, you're a couple, you're in love, do you really need a visual reminder in every room in your house?!

DismalDaphne · 02/10/2017 18:42

Everybody to their own I guess. People really need to stop worrying about other people's decor it's not you who lives there so why care.

Kezzamo · 02/10/2017 18:49

Well remind me to never let a mumsneter in my house! I have a feature wall of log paper, a driftwood stags head, crushed velvet curtains, a concrete grey &, grey walls 2 different greys, the odd phrase here and there. A silver wall, black bedroom furniture.

Just out of interest what is actually acceptable?

metalmum15 · 02/10/2017 18:50

We were told to take the bookshelves out. I hope you changed estate agents

Me too. We're selling up soon and any estate agent telling me to remove my bookcases will get the boot. There's nowhere else for them to go anyway. I've seen some truly foul houses up around here for a fortune, dark wooden bathrooms with pink carpet, rooms decorated with several different kinds of wallpaper (in one room) etc, so I can't see a few books (that will be going with us) will put people off.

The previous owners thought dark grey was a good idea Hmm without the lights on even the sunniest days are dull in what should be a beautiful light filled hall and landing

I've just thought of something else that makes me think "what the heck?"; artfully arranged logs in an alcove or even fireplace, all the same length and diameter, a sort of log feature wall area. I can never get my head around how somebody bothers to do this, and where they source identical logs. When we have logs delivered they are very irregular in size/shape/colour, and get shoved in the log store. Also it becomes apparent sometimes that the owners of these logs DON'T EVEN HAVE A FIRE!
As someone who discovered a death watch beetle in some logs I brought into the house, ( the clicking gave it away, i hunted it down and identified it from a book) I am very wary of keeping too many logs in the house at once.

Bluntness100 · 02/10/2017 19:09

On the estate agent, I do think if bookshelves are cluttering up the room, and taking up too much space they should be removed. In some rooms bookshelves look great, tasteful shelving units with hard backs , in a room that can’t take them due to its size, but too often it’s 80s pine or some mdf unit, with a ton of dog eared paperbacks and the occasional picture or dvd or some such shite thrown in for good measure.

Put your books in a cupboard if you don’t have the space, the fact you know you read is enough. You don’t need to clutter up your living space proving it to everyone else.. the estate agent may or may not have been right. It depends on the books, the shelving and the room.
