Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

I've just bought a massive wicker heart - love it (it's grey to go with my other grey decor).
On the flip side, I have also Freecycled my signs telling people what to do where Grin

Shadow666 · 01/10/2017 15:09

When you see pictures of posh people's houses with their photos in frames on cabinets and their wallpaper, they just look so twee. The reality is no houses will appeal to everyone so just have what you like.

LakieLady · 01/10/2017 15:10

I hate most blinds except for roller blinds or Roman blinds. Vertical, Venetian, plantation - you can keep the dust-gathering fuckers. I am also developing a hatred for sofas with padded cushiony bits on the arms, which seems to be about 80% of leather sofas (we want leather because I've never managed to train a dog to stay off the furniture).

I used to hate corner sofas, but we stayed in a holiday cottage that had one and I liked the way we can both stretch out but still be together iykwim. It means I can keep DP close enough to give him a slap or a pinch if he misbehaves. We can't have one in this house because it's small and every wall in the living room has a door, a window or an alcove in the way.

RustyLeaf · 01/10/2017 15:15

corner/modular sofas are great - very social but private.

i like grey. its a beautiful colour. but you have to have the right house. a house i will never have Sad.

i hate the modern smiley family pics "poster" thing, though its been going for eons. so fake!!!!!! if it were me, I'd dress us up in Edwardian costume and look soberly at the camera!

Ugh to the words thing. Relax, or Love or whatever.

Ugh.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/10/2017 15:16

The other day while looking at new bathroom flooring, I saw some very dark grey or black carpet, with sparkly bits all over it.
That was a whole new 'Who TF would want that in their house?' moment for me.

RoseWhiteTips · 01/10/2017 15:18

and would douse every house in ivy and wisteria if it wasn't so destructive.

Virginia Creeper is a lovely wall creeper. Have three.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 01/10/2017 15:18

It's hard to get a feel for your bedroom, AgainPlease as you've posted the pic in black and white.

RustyLeaf · 01/10/2017 15:18

hey becotide I'm poor and I have books - although in ikea bookcases rather than bookshelves!

but i get your point.

but some things are about taste, too. tacky is not just about money. money can't buy you class (Real Housewives of NY).

Uptheduffy · 01/10/2017 15:20

How on earth is a family smiling for a photograph "fake", Rustyleaf ? I don't have any because I'd rather not look at myself, but very happy to have photos of my beautiful dcs up.
I have no taste but I like to have things in my rooms that make me smile - whether because of the colour, the texture, a memory about buying it or because they are bloody useful. I am in my house 99% more often than any visitors are so it should be all about us really imo.

notreallythere · 01/10/2017 15:22

We got grey carpet in our new build because when we saw the samples it was the only one that looked halfway decent.

With us not being supposed to paint until the house has settled, completely white walls and grey carpet I'll admit does look boring as hell.

Solo · 01/10/2017 15:30

My living room walls were painted 'Bluebell White' very cold grey when I bought my house...they've been pink for some time now! I was thinking about changing it to 'Hessian' which is darker than 'Magnolia' but, still very neutral however, I'm not really sold on it to be truthful.

washingmachinefastwash · 01/10/2017 15:33

Glitter on walls, dressers and any other furniture.

I also hate the broken CDs grouted onto staircases, walls, etc.

I don’t like striped carpet.

WritingHome · 01/10/2017 15:34

Things I dislike are:
decal quotes on walls (I know someone who has a quote from chasing cars in huge curly font on the wall over her bed - makes me cringe!)
overly styled rooms like brown and teal and EVERY accessory is in teal
new leather furniture (don't mind antique)
EVERYTHING from ikea or argos or next. I don't mind a bit but mixed with other stuff
cheap looking white laminate furniture
fake flowers
houses with no books
huge wall mounted tvs
tvs in every room
no real fire (not even mad about stoves)
twee plaques with 'quotes'

Ollivander84 · 01/10/2017 15:34

My grey hall Grin it's the first decorating I've ever done and I adore the colour. Wouldn't like it all over though

Megabus · 01/10/2017 15:37

I have loads of cheesey quote decals. I can't help myself

mishfish · 01/10/2017 15:40

There's a woman on FB/Instagram who works in MLM and has decided that she's now an interiors expert and is absolutely destroying her 400 year old cottage with twig hearts pinned into the 400 year old doors. They're EVERYWHERE.

RustyLeaf · 01/10/2017 15:42

Er, cos I know those families, Duffy.

Its all fake.

Like Fakebook.

The only people who do it IME are full of themselves! for no justifiable reason. Thats why I gave my opinion, based on that. But if you're happy, whatever.

RustyLeaf · 01/10/2017 15:43

the stealth boasting about the beautiful children as well.

thats all part of it!

PandaPacer · 01/10/2017 15:45

Colour coordinated books in a bookcase make me cringe.
Also, books turned the wrong way around so the spines are against the wall. TBH I have only seen this on Instagram. Surely no one does it in real life?

Roomba · 01/10/2017 15:45

I'm reading this thread from certain relative's house. I can see her LIVE LAUGH LOVE framed sampler from here and she has that twee one about 'Dance like no one is watching' in the other room. Also large vases with twigs and fairy lights in. My relative, to be generous is hyper critical po faced and very unlikely to follow the advice of her framed slogans. I often wonder what possessed her to buy them, as warm and cosy aren't really words I'd use for her!

Anyway, she was telling me earlier she's about to strip it all out and redo it all in grey. The living room gets very little light so I imagine it will look very cold and dingy in here afterwards.

I like it when people's houses reflect who they are, whatever style that may be. I hate that my house is decorated the way I could afford to at the time, not really how I would do it if I had unlimited time to plan, decent shops nearby and the money to do it my way. As a result it probably says very little about who I am.

RustyLeaf · 01/10/2017 15:45

Its like a kind of weird arrogance. I had children. I took a photo. I don't have to do anything else.

RoseWhiteTips · 01/10/2017 15:46

Today 15:03 becotide

poor people things

things that poor people find accessible

Things that poor people like

Things that fit into poor people houses

Are never going to be acceptable, and are always going to be considered tacky.

Tv's on walls, sofas pushed against walls, lack of huge roaming bookshelves - all a direct result of being poor and living in a small house.

Yes but some people - so called celebrities, footballers etc - are not cash poor yet they live in places that do not house a single book - probably.

Megabus · 01/10/2017 15:47

That's really weird rusty

Megabus · 01/10/2017 15:49

Hold on....sofas pushed against walls?? Unless your rooms are reet big, you have to push your sofas against the walls??

Wauden · 01/10/2017 15:50

Grey paint: so depressing! My school uniform was all grey so I am allergic to the colour. >shudders
