To hate these current home trends...

Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

I hate wooden letters. A friend got us "Mr & Mrs" letters when we got married last year and I hate them. I'm guilty of bringing them out every time friend comes round, then throwing them back in the cupboard Blush

I must admit my house does look like Disneyland threw up on it though. Between me and almost teen daughter we fill any space with something Disney. I'm also partial to crushed velvet clothing. No sofas or beds though, with 7 dogs and 3 cats it would be a constant battle to get fur off! Each to their own Grin

NoKidsTwoCats · 01/10/2017 14:02

So much grey bashing Hmm. Some houses are ott and an almost entirely grey house would be rubbish but the same could be said of any colour: if your whole house was magnolia or warm orange/yellow (a la 90s) that would be too much, too. Grey used with other colours can look so lovely. We have grey sofas in an otherwise non-grey house and I love them!

The things I don't like are:

Twee quotes on the walls

Vertical blinds (remind me of a 90s office)

Personal stuff that's done in a really twee way eg Mr and Mrs ornaments, family initials in those light up letters, over-posed photography studio pictures.

Over designed rooms where everything is 100% coordinated

Beech/birch anything

Clutter OR minimalism

Glittery/sparkly stuff

Shadow666 · 01/10/2017 14:02

Oh, god, I just buy everything in Ikea. A friend is having a house built, black shiny bathroom snd kitchen. Surely a nightmare to clean?

SoupDragon · 01/10/2017 14:02

What I hate the most is people who don't have what they love in their house but follow some trend or other.

RoseWhiteTips · 01/10/2017 14:03

Grrrr

crushed Elves?!?!?!!

...crushed velvet but...etc

RoseWhiteTips · 01/10/2017 14:05

Grey is going to be passé very very soon - if it isn't already. That's the problem with trends. Far better to have the confidence to
decorate according to your own ideas of interior style.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 01/10/2017 14:05

The books whose pages are folded to spell words give me a visceral disgust reaction. I can't explain it - I fold down the corners of books to mark my place, which horrifies some book lovers. But using a book purely as decoration seems horrific.

Plus, they look terrible.

TheFirstMrsDV · 01/10/2017 14:08

I love velvet sofas. I would adore a massive squashy one in purple or emerald green.

Inertia · 01/10/2017 14:10

Anything red.

All your crap out everywhere, especially in the kitchen where it'll get covered in grease and dust and never look clean.

Those all in one ceiling fans and lights.

TheCatsMother99 · 01/10/2017 14:13

The phrase 'live, love, laugh' needs to burn in the firey pits of hell, especially when it's been stencilled on to the wall.

NoKidsTwoCats · 01/10/2017 14:15

Ooh! Thankfully this trend is dying but I still see it from time to time: anything that says 'Keep calm and...'

AAAARGH

CarrieBradshaw85 · 01/10/2017 14:24

Live, Love, Laugh wall art shudders

RoseWhiteTips · 01/10/2017 14:27

Therealslimshady

I would love an oversized burnt orange velvet sofa....not crushed velvet, real velvet....sigh

Ikea currently have this one:

Trills · 01/10/2017 14:27

Anything red?

Anything?

chlopo1443 · 01/10/2017 14:30

I am so glad everyone has moved on from having a feature wall in floral then.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 01/10/2017 14:31

The 'in this house we laugh , live ' posters

that said Loaf have the most gorgeous velvet sofas . The blue one is to die for

wingerkite · 01/10/2017 14:41

KEEP CALM AND EAT CUPCAKES

that was the worst one I've ever seen I think. Absolutely inane.

LakieLady · 01/10/2017 14:42

I think you're being harsh, they are actually both stylish and useful. Until we had these,I used to shite all over the kitchen work tops. Since we got the sign saying 'defecate' for the toilet, it is no longer a problem

Grin

I had the word "sleep" stencilled on the wall above the bed. DP spraypainted a red line across it, and added the word "shag".

fairyofallthings · 01/10/2017 14:50

Hmmm. Looking round my lounge - crushed velvet throws (20 years old and still as good as when I bought them!), twig heart on string, cheesy sayings on the wall, wooden hearts on string - got them all.

Thank goodness none of you are likely to come to my unacceptable home! Grin

sarasabrownie · 01/10/2017 14:52

I love velvet sofas (not crushed though) but unfortunately after poring over £3000 sofas on the internet we bit the bullet and bought the cheapest (non- velvet) IKEA Ektorp. Not only could we not afford the aforementioned 'good' velvet sofa, I also realised that I would need to get rid of both my children and dog before allowing such a beauty into the house. Also I don't have a living room where the sofa sits so far away from the wall that you can fit an accessible bookshelf behind or an attractive console table. Maybe that's another litmus test of 'class' and/or taste: Do you live in a house where sofas HAVE to be up against the wall? (I suspect wealth might have something to do with it) Owners of costly but achingly expensive Cotswold cottages don't count! I think many people live in houses that are accumulations of years of IKEA purchases, odd family heirlooms (and I'm just talking about the odd vase here or there not the old Chippendale), things you can't afford to replace and practical items. I think a lot of people on here are poking fun at first-time homeowners who are starting from scratch and are buying a whole look that is usually 'high' street, purchasable on credit and very much of it's time. Not all people want furniture and nick nacks that look like they've been rescued from a skip Grin

Solo · 01/10/2017 14:52

I got some gorgeous real velvet curtains in a beautiful orange colour from Freecycle; I'm going to make rugs and a bed runner out of them and some cushions - all for my bedroom!
I don't follow trends and I have a very eclectic style; I have what I like!

fairyofallthings · 01/10/2017 14:54

just read back, I'm a lost cause - I have a gallery wall and grey walls :-(
Do I redeem myself by having no twiggy shit or pebbles?

OneOfTheGrundys · 01/10/2017 14:58

On a related note.
Those t shirts/sweat shirts that say stuff like 'You wouldn't get it, it's a thing.

I like a twiggy heart but only in moderation. Wall decals that declare stuff piss me right off.

becotide · 01/10/2017 15:03

poor people things

things that poor people find accessible

Things that poor people like

Things that fit into poor people houses

Are never going to be acceptable, and are always going to be considered tacky.

Tv's on walls, sofas pushed against walls, lack of huge roaming bookshelves - all a direct result of being poor and living in a small house.

AgainPlease · 01/10/2017 15:08

Aw :( but I love my crushed velvet headboard, cushions, and chaise lounge
