To spend £150 on something I don't need but want very much?

I need new underwear. I have £130 worth of pants and 2 bras in my shiopping basket. My current underwear is all a bit mingling and stretchy.

ANd then I found the most beautiful perfect thing i have been looking for for ever. Something I really really really want. I dont need it though. It's not practical, it doesn't do anything, but I want it.

So which should I buy?

I'm not proper skint. Just relatively. I wouldn't be considering squandering £££ if there was no food in the fridge.

And there is the money box of £2 coins.

I would buy neither unless I could afford it.

But I love nativity set porn. Do you have a link?

MorrisZapp · 01/10/2017 09:42

I love a sloggi, but you don't need to blow a fortune. When I first started working in the nineties, I bought myself one pair of Calvin Kleins a month.

wombattoo · 01/10/2017 09:43

I also haven't seen previous threads other than bc so I was being flippant. If you can afford it - do both Smile

Who knew Hagrid was present at the birth of christ

Of course he was. He provided the "magic" of the night JC was born Grin

MOIST · 01/10/2017 09:45

I suspect the references to my skintness comes from a thread about what to charge D2 for rent while she is a student at come while I sub D1 while she lives away. It got slightly weird.

In an increasingly secular society it is worth spending that much money on a lovely thing that will have "inheritance value" that might mean nothing to your children? Do you have more than one child? Would it get split? You've managed for years without a nativity set. A thing that get stored for 11 months of the year and then used for only 12 days in December. What a waste of money. £30 on a set? Ok. £150 on a set? Waste, waste, waste. But cheaper undies, buy a cheaper nativity set.

missadasmith · 01/10/2017 09:52

not sure what that means in monetary terms but unless you have savings, I'd get the undies from Tesco and shelf the nativity set idea.

wombattoo · 01/10/2017 09:58

I seem to be a lone voice.
Who cares if it's a waste? You are only here once. Live.

HemanOrSheRa · 01/10/2017 10:02

I'd get the nativity set. Otherwise you will spend the whole of December regretting it. And every December for the rest of your life!

blankface · 01/10/2017 10:05

my entire life is spent shopping in supermarkets and charity shops and reduced rails and cutting corners. So why shouldn't i be a bit frivolous?

If it's something you've wanted for so long and you know you will treasure it, and it's a one-off which you will love every year as your own piece of tradition, buy it Smile

Zadig · 01/10/2017 10:07

What actually is a navy nativity set? I'm imagining an open wooden box with some little figures and sheep on it? Is it an ornamental thing or for children to play with?

Fifthtimelucky · 01/10/2017 10:09

I’m in the nativity set camp too, especially if you have been looking for one for a while and this one is perfect. Buy a cheap multi pack of knickers to tide you over.

Appuskidu · 01/10/2017 10:10

How much is the nativity set (crib?)?

Can you buy one bra and 1-2 pairs of knickers now-do you have to spend £130 all in one go?

loveka · 01/10/2017 10:11

Buy it! It will make you happy every time you look at it.

Auntiedahlia · 01/10/2017 10:13

Buy the nativity set.

Catsize · 01/10/2017 10:15

Good grief. Just looked up those pants. They take Bridget Jones to a whole new level. And I'm not known for my sexy underwear.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 01/10/2017 10:15

In an increasingly secular society... It's a Nativity Set. At Christmas.
Hmm

Catsize · 01/10/2017 10:15

Secretly tempted though. Wink

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/10/2017 10:17

After your comment Catsize, I've just had a look too. Basically tight above the knee bloomers!

Brittbugs80 · 01/10/2017 10:18

It's a scene depicting the birth of Christ with the wise men, shepherds, Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, the Angel Gabriel and a few animals.

You can get child friendly ones for them to play with but ours are ornamental and not for playing with but DS likes setting it up

SciFiFan2015 · 01/10/2017 10:20

Yes I know it's a nativity set at Christmas but FGS Christmas is losing its original meaning because we are an increasingly secular society. That's the logic.
I suppose if the OP and her family are regular church goers to whom their faith is important to them then perhaps it has more significance but if not then it's a frivolous waste of money.
I'd still suggest £30 on a nativity is more than enough to spend.

bertsdinner · 01/10/2017 10:23

Id just buy it. Im all for being frugal but you only live once once, may as well enjoy life and buy something you really want.
Whether its worth it/a good purchase is all relative. If you want it and have the cash, buy it.

Chapterandverse · 01/10/2017 10:26

Link us to the set?

I have a small ornamental one my kids love. But we hoovered Jesus up last year & no miracle has seen him return to the box in the attic (I checked) so we need to replace it.

Last year as he was sucked up on Christmas Eve we used a screwed up piece of kitchen roll. It won't work again this year..
