To spend £150 on something I don't need but want very much?

MOIST · 01/10/2017 08:14

I need new underwear. I have £130 worth of pants and 2 bras in my shiopping basket. My current underwear is all a bit mingling and stretchy.

ANd then I found the most beautiful perfect thing i have been looking for for ever. Something I really really really want. I dont need it though. It's not practical, it doesn't do anything, but I want it.

So which should I buy?

Our nativity set is a cheap pot one. However, it was passed down from my great grandma, to my grandma, to my mum to me and has huge sentimental value. Something doesn't need to cost lostmto have value.

So no, I wouldn't spend a fortune on something that comes out for one month a year. Neither would I spend that much on bloody knickers. I'd buy cheaper but nice ones (M&S or JL) and put the rest of he money away.

JaniceBattersby · 01/10/2017 09:06

cost a lot to have value

SardinesAreSwimming · 01/10/2017 09:06

£130 on undies? Eek.

Salmakia · 01/10/2017 09:07

I have a beautiful nativity set that I love and I'm an atheist! I got it from Lakeland in a post Christmas sale so it was not insanely expensive, still gorgeous the following Christmas and the one after though (and will be this year too!) I'd say get the underwear now and the beautiful nativity set after Christmas. You'll still love it next year.

Vonklump · 01/10/2017 09:07

Will you regret it next year if you don't buy the nativity? You've been looking for ages.

I saw some Christmas twig decoration thing years ago and loved it. I'm very "sensible," so didn't waste my money on it even though I could have afforded it.
Still kick myself slightly.

tippz · 01/10/2017 09:08

@MOIST

Don't spend the money on the Nativity set, unless you are in position where you wouldn't notice if £150 went missing from your bank account, or wouldn't care if it went missing from your purse.

Not being funny, but from everything you have posted (here, and on previous threads,) you don't sound like someone who can take a £150 hit on your finances, for a £150 Nativity set.

I have a feeling that we will see you on here post Christmas, pouring your woes out because you have maxed your credit cards and overdraft limit, and 'can't understand why' because you are 'normally quite frugal.'

To the people encouraging the OP, by saying stuff like 'my mother bought an expensive Nativity set many years ago that makes her sooooo happy every year,' that lady may have been in a completely different financial position to the OP.

Upshot is, if someone needs to come onto an internet forum to ASK if she should be spending the money, then she should really NOT be spending it, because she obviously has her doubts.

We cobble together our nativity scene with happy land characters Grin

Penny4UrThoughts · 01/10/2017 09:10

Oh gosh, I say get the nativity set.

It's a really special purchase, it will be something you treasure forever, it will not go out of fashion. If you have found 'the one' can you really take the risk of never finding it again? You can buy cheap knickers to keep you going till next month.

CiderwithBuda · 01/10/2017 09:12

Nativity set and cheaper knickers. 'Cos your Sloggies won't fit you for long if you are Bootcamping and then shrinking! Grin

Where is the nativity set from?

I love Christmas and Christmas decorations and something like that would give me pleasure for years. I once almost spent a fortune importing a wooden tiered stand from the States to replicate something I saw on Pinterest for Christmas! I didn't in the end because the company never got back to me but I was going to. I had said to DH that it could be my Christmas present. Which is a thought - could it be your Christmas present? (In the end I got my stand in tk Maxx for £15! Grin

Penny4UrThoughts · 01/10/2017 09:12

@tippz she isn't asking if she should spend the money. She is asking what she should spend the money on.

Obviously if she said that she can't afford £150 on anything then answers would be different...

TheMasterNotMargarita · 01/10/2017 09:14

I would buy the undies.
I have been wearing ill fitting bras and Primark pants for months due to pregnancy/bfing. I treated myself to some decent bras and it's like an everyday luxury.
But I got one properly fitted which cost £21 and another 2 online for £12 total.
Nice designer pants from Tk Maxx so not a massive outlay.
Nativity set will come out once a year. Decent underwear makes you feel good everyday, I had forgotten how much it mattered til I replaced the old rags.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 01/10/2017 09:19

Get the Nativity. I inherited a fabulous one (I think it's Beleek) from my gran and it makes me happy every time it come out.
The knickers will need replacing in a couple of months...

BusterGonad · 01/10/2017 09:21

Underwear every time, but I am not religious and it would break my heart to spend so much on a nativity set!

EllieThornton · 01/10/2017 09:22

Why don't you buy the Nativity set and go commando?

Whisky2014 · 01/10/2017 09:23

Follow Martin Lewis advice.
Skint? Do I need it? Can i afford it?
Not skint? Will I use it? Is it worth it?

SloanePeterson · 01/10/2017 09:24

Now you've got me googling nativity sets. I love ours but it was a charity shop but with a few heads needing gluing. this one has amused me. Who knew Hagrid was present at the birth of christ?

SloanePeterson · 01/10/2017 09:25

this one is creepy as fuck though

snackajacker · 01/10/2017 09:25

Or buy the sloggis and make them a family heirloom instead Grin

BabsGanoush · 01/10/2017 09:26

Well you can show people your Nativity Set, but not your knickers, but...

it's sounds like you can't afford either.

So buy Tesco knickers and get the Nav. Set in the sale in Jan IF you have any money left over.

wombattoo · 01/10/2017 09:28

MOIST I advise you to buy the underwear and the nativity set if it is not taking food out of the kids mouths so to speak. Life is too short. Make yourself happy Smile

EezerGoode · 01/10/2017 09:30

The thing with a nativity set is,you can pass it down as a heirloom to younger family members...my grandad a had one ,as a young child I remember helping set it up each year..my mum has it at moment it will pass to me at some point.....now you can't do that with knickers👙

Hermonie2016 · 01/10/2017 09:34

I think we have to see the navity set before deciding..mn might help you to locate cheaperSmile

BananaSandwichesEveryDay · 01/10/2017 09:38

I haven't read any of your previous threads, so my response is based purely on what you've said here. I'd go with the nativity scene. It sounds as though you've been looking for the 'perfect' one for a long time. There have been times we've really struggled and even now, finances are not always easy. How much worse it would be if we could only ever spend our money on necessities. Sometimes it does you good to just do something because you want to. And it sounds as though the nativity would bring you pleasure for a few weeks every year.
Our nativity is one my ddad made when our dcs were children and it was an exact copy of the one he made for us when we were small. It's not very expensive or even that wonderful to look at. But the memories it brings back are priceless. So Jayne look on your 'extravagant ' purchase as less of an inanimate object than a memory generator.
I hope you love it when you get it.

MorrisZapp · 01/10/2017 09:39

Blimey. I love Christmas but I don't think I've ever seen a nativity set in anyone's house, far less coveted one myself. I'll be sure to avoid pinterest :)

OP, this isn't a question for MN. It's for you and your partner and your family. If you're genuinely skint as others have suggested, you can't afford indulgences like nativity sets or luxury underwear.

Can you afford it?

MOIST · 01/10/2017 09:40

I see some of you haven't discovered the joy of the sloggi long leg. These are not just pants you know.
