This has probably been done a million times but I'm curious.

Would also like to know your reasons why.

Everyone says I'm both in the wrong era. Sounds so clique but I love Bowie and Dylan hense my username

She makes me cry. She makes me want to stand on beaches and watch the waves crash, but I love her so Grin

Ragusa · 01/10/2017 21:12

Exactly User. Nail on head. I loved your other choices too.

Greedycushionhoarder2 · 01/10/2017 21:28

Springsteen will always be my number 1, his music has got me through some really difficult times.
Pink, love her voice and love the emotion in the lyrics.
Lady Antebellum, same as above, seeing them live next week and so excited.
Also getting into Kelsea Ballerini who will be their support act.
The Alarm
The eagles, def leppard, guns n roses, skid row, ocean colour scene.

WeatherDependent · 01/10/2017 21:44

In no particular order

Stereophonics
Foo Fighters
The Who
The Smiths
Morrissey
Stone Roses
New Order
Doves
The Jam
Housemartins
The Killers
and Doris Day!

Winditup · 01/10/2017 21:48

Still listen to The Prodigy dating back to 1989 I love my old school! Grin

ForalltheSaints · 01/10/2017 22:09

I'm not allowed to declare who they are, given that two members of my family are and a third has been a professional musician. A fourth was an accountant to one, and another managed a band. I'd just upset one of them!

MumBod · 01/10/2017 22:20

Also:

The Smiths
The Cure
Elbow
The Faces
The Kinks
The Jam
The Pogues
The Wonderstuff
The Stone Roses
Massive Attack
Blondie
Leonard Cohen
Nick Cave

Blahblahblahhhhhhh · 01/10/2017 22:23

The levellers. I have loved them for over 25 years now. And I always will.

BoysofMelody · 01/10/2017 22:52

Bob Dylan
Ella Fitzgerald
Nirvana
Nick Drake
Nina Simone
Sandy Denny
Belle & Sebastian
The Proclaimers
Camera Obscura*

I'm sure there's a pattern there somewhere

Finally someone with decent taste in music! (I'd argue the toss over the proclaimers though)

EarlessToothlessVagabond · 01/10/2017 23:06

I've recently got into Ghostpoet and Young Fathers.

Things I return to are Alt J, Nirvana, Pixies.

Teutonic · 02/10/2017 00:20

Insancerra.
I know, but politics don't interest me. Sound does Smile

DoctorTwo · 02/10/2017 04:20

Voivod. Piggy was such a clever guitarist.
Living Colour. Corey Blover has the most beautiful voice, and Mick Jagger played harmonica on their debut album.
Black Flag. Rollins is the angriest man alive
Dead Kennedys. Especially Frankenchrist.

And of course, Faith No More. Mike Patton has the most versatile voice in any genre of music.

user1487175389 · 02/10/2017 06:39

boysofmelody thank you :-) there i was thinking it was the world's most random list

Happy to argue over the Proclaimers although my argument goes "they make me and my dcs dance around the kitchen, singing at the tops of our voices = pure joy"

TheMaddHugger · 02/10/2017 07:04

from the first moment I heard them, Their very first song. I was hooked. Have followed their whole career

ShowMePotatoSalad · 02/10/2017 08:06

David Bowie
Stevie Wonder
Bruce Springsteen

I admit to having a great fondness for sunshine on Leith though. I live very close to the Hibs ground and when they sing it before kick off it is properly spine tingling!

The list makes perfect sense, jazz, folk or folk inspired seems to be the dominant theme!

dustarr73 · 02/10/2017 08:45

Madonna for the past 35 years, she has been my idol.

I love the way she doesnt care what people think.Likes t push bounderies and of course her amazing music back catalogue.

She has a great voice, very talented songwriter and out of all the big stars is surprisingly scandal free[unless its her own making of course].I just think she is fantastic and most people cant hold a candle to her.

IVFNewbie · 02/10/2017 08:53

Killswitch Engage (just brilliant, rousing metalcore), ELO (grew up to it) and Del Amitri (Justin tells my story)

Ragusa · 02/10/2017 10:00

User14... totally makes sense to me too. Most in your list share strong melodic element, lots of close harmony, lots of melancholia (apart from proclaimers), which everyone knows makes the very best music.

user1487175389 · 02/10/2017 10:16

Yeah, actually, thinking about it, I save the Proclaimers for when one of the other bands or artists on my list has taken me into my familiar, melodic, melancholy place and I can't get anything done. They're my musical antidepressant.

BoysofMelody · 02/10/2017 10:27

User 14

Certainly Camera Obscura have that deep vein of melancholy. I think Traceyanne Campbell is the best songwriter in Britain by some distance.
