to be disappointed about luxury store customer service?

My DD1 has just turned 21, so today we went to vv expensive, luxury shop to buy her possibly the 3rd cheapest thing they offer - agreed pressie, actually not too expensive in the scheme of things.

We were both reasonably dressed - possibly more so than the tourists wandering around - yet we were not treated that well. Apparently the system is you give your name at the door - no one asked us that, so we wandered around until I found a sales lady who said she would add our names to the list.

20 mins later we were then served by the most incredibly sullen youth I have ever come across. Absolutely no interest in us - slapped the chosen item on the counter, didn't bother to point out any its features or why it would be so desirable. No kind of "is this a special purchase" or any interest at all actually. The packaging was eventually lovely, and hopefully she will get beautiful emails from the store in question and maybe the odd glossy brochure in the future after we'd filled in all the inevitable details.

I feel mugged!

We still bought it, because she'd set her heart on it, but she was disappointed by the whole experience because of the way we were treated. She loves the present, but the experience was such a bloody disappointment!

That's a shame. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't pay the staff much more than other retail jobs which might lead to resentment? (Wild speculation, but I can imagine being pissed off with people with a load of cash if I didn't have much). I don't know. I used to work in Woolies and I was always lovely.

It does depend on the store, Dolce and Gabbana in London were all absolute wankers but everyone was really nice in Vivienne Westwood and Gucci. You get friendlier staff and often more choice in Harvey Nicks or Selfridges I think so I prefer the department store!

There are women on here with £2 to see them through the week to feed their babies, women on here who are sexually assaulted, sometimes by their own husbands, women on here with terminal illness, and you've got your silk knickers in a twist because you didnt get a gold bow on your luxury toy?

Oh give over Splendid. It's not a crime for the OP to want her daughter to enjoy something she's had her heart set on.

all staff are required to speak at least 2 languages apparently. It was a tiny purse thingy with a key fob attached - her heart's dream (god knows why, but it was her birthday!) Super top high end store. Can honestly say it was pretty much the worst customer service I have ever received, no interaction whatsoever. I'd have walked, but it was what she wanted... I buy most of my clothes from Tesco and Sainsburys, and people are always really nice, say "oh isnt this pretty" or whatever, just part of the chat you make really.

It's really funny the way they treat their customers. I think it's probably always been that way. I would try to buy in selfridges or similar instead of going to the store. I do love walking around Mayfair in my baggy jeans though looking into those stores. It's all pretentious and quite entertaining.

I think it is entirely reasonable to expect good service in any retail outlet, but especially one where they sell luxury goods.

OP has made it clear that it was a birthday treat for her daughter - what's wrong with that?

Unfortunately a lot of sales assistants in these shops think they are hugely better than other assistants. The reality is they are no more qualified or better paid than retail assistants in high street shops.

In my experience they prefer sucking up to the super rich Arabs, Chinese and Russians!

I prefer it when there's not much interaction actually. Because when there is, it's forced, as they've been told to say certain things as part of their job, not because they have a personal interest in us. For example 'did you find what you were looking for today?'. But maybe I'm just miserable! I go to buy what I want, not for a chat or because I feel owed special treatment, or to be led into signing up for a store card.

Funny that your username has the word isolation in it..as that's where your opinion belongs, how bloody rude.
yolo unfortunately to some, a job i just a job and if the way they treat you doesn't effect their pay slip then they don't care. Not right at all (I work in customer service and it's completely unacceptable) but don't waste your energy dwelling on it!

Do you know splendid whilst I agree with you and understand your point because Iv been one of those women you so glibly describe to make your point I think that you maybe need to look at yourself and how you come across before you try to rip apart someone else.

You have no fucking idea what the circumstances of this poster are, that they might in fact be one of those women but wanted to do something nice for their child.

i watched a TV show 'inside asprey' they had a special event where the showcased their awful croc skinned bags to rich arabs and laid on afternoon tea etc. It really is another world that I am glad not to be a part of.
