to be disappointed about luxury store customer service?

My DD1 has just turned 21, so today we went to vv expensive, luxury shop to buy her possibly the 3rd cheapest thing they offer - agreed pressie, actually not too expensive in the scheme of things.

We were both reasonably dressed - possibly more so than the tourists wandering around - yet we were not treated that well. Apparently the system is you give your name at the door - no one asked us that, so we wandered around until I found a sales lady who said she would add our names to the list.

20 mins later we were then served by the most incredibly sullen youth I have ever come across. Absolutely no interest in us - slapped the chosen item on the counter, didn't bother to point out any its features or why it would be so desirable. No kind of "is this a special purchase" or any interest at all actually. The packaging was eventually lovely, and hopefully she will get beautiful emails from the store in question and maybe the odd glossy brochure in the future after we'd filled in all the inevitable details.

I feel mugged!

We still bought it, because she'd set her heart on it, but she was disappointed by the whole experience because of the way we were treated. She loves the present, but the experience was such a bloody disappointment!

I don't really understand?

You were dressed nicely? You want her to get lovely emails? You wanted shop assistant to ask why you were buying it?

A) relevance?
B) she might do?
C) I'd rather not be asked questions when I'm just trying to buy something.

LoyaltyAndLobster · 29/09/2017 21:20

OP what is VV ?

GwenStaceyRocks · 29/09/2017 21:21

I'm guessing Mulberry because I had a very similar experience in their store. I went in alone and they were less than disinterested. Went in a second time with DH and he tried to engage them. Again, they were aloof and rude. So we left and bought a bag from Westwood where the staff were absolutely lovely.

Chapterandverse · 29/09/2017 21:21

Was it Tiffany?

Do they even have them here?

MyBrilliantDisguise · 29/09/2017 21:22

Was it Tiffany?

HemanOrSheRa · 29/09/2017 21:23

Haha. I clicked on the thread to say Tiffany.

yolofish · 29/09/2017 21:23

ok maybe some people arent like me. but I took her to a v expensive shop to buy her heart's desire for her 21st (under £150 if that makes a difference?) and we got treated a bit shit.

When I buy a £20 dress in tesco or sainsbos I get better customer service and better interaction with the person doing the selling!

is that clear enough? I thought these high end shops were all about the experience, and the service, and the lurrve and all that shit. obviously I was wrong, but then I've never bought something in one of them before...

I just wanted someone to realise that this was a young girl being bought something relatively expensive and it would have been nice if the sales assistant had kind of recognised that?

It's pretty obvious that when people buy a luxury item they expect and usually get someone who is at least pleasant to me. I'm annoyed if I buy a packet of teabags from a surly bloke, but if I had saved up a lot of money (to me) for a special gift for my daughter's 21st I'd be really pissed off if the sales staff couldn't be friendly and polite.

Madbengalmum · 29/09/2017 21:24

Interesting, always found Chanel / Dolce to be very pleasant.

My bet is on Louis Vuitton.

JonSnowsWife · 29/09/2017 21:26

YNBU. There was a very famous someone who went into a quite famous store out of work hours (so not dressed as they usually are - ergo not recognisable) They treated them like absolute shit. Crux of it they missed out on a tonne of money from them.

I vote with my feet in shops like this. Suggest politely you do the same in future OP
hope your DD still had a good birthday.

BelleandBeast · 29/09/2017 21:26

YANBU.

It's like going to a fancy hotel, you want a bit of fawning for the price you pay.

I bet they fawn over the celebs.

InsomniacAnonymous · 29/09/2017 21:28

LoyaltyAndLobster "OP what is VV ?"

Presumably you're referring to this in the OP:- "today we went to vv expensive, luxury shop".
VV = very very

Hmm
GwenStaceyRocks · 29/09/2017 21:29

yolo you weren't unreasonable to expect them to provide excellent customer service. It should add to the experience of buying a luxury item.
Not all luxury stores are the same. As you can see from this thread, some names come up time and again for good customer service: Gucci; Vivienne Westwood. Your expectations would be met at their stores ie an assistant greets you at the door, they help you choose, they chat about whether it's for a special occasion or not, they wrap the items beautifully. I've found their customer service to be the same whether I'm buying one of the cheapest items in their store or something more expensive.
Then there are places that treat you as though you are an inconvenience and privileged to be allowed in their store.
I know which experience I prefer.

dressinggown8305 · 29/09/2017 21:29

Burberry?

Please tell us where it was OP.

LoyaltyAndLobster · 29/09/2017 21:29

I don't think it is Louis Vuitton although if the store is busy they do usually take your name down and ask you to wait, DP has been there plenty of times in a tracksuit and always receives good customer services, I've never had any bad experiences shopping there either, I'm always offered a drink.

LoyaltyAndLobster · 29/09/2017 21:31

@InsomniacAnonymous - Thanks for telling me, I didn't think there was an abbreviation for very very Blush

Madbengalmum · 29/09/2017 21:32

Loyalty, it was the name taking that made me think LV. Not seen it anywhere else.

RavingRoo · 29/09/2017 21:32

This is why i go to Selfridges when I want to make a high end purchase. The recruitment is geared more towards people passionate about fashion/beauty/retail than the model wannabes most of the high end designer shops tend to recruit.

MrsGrindah · 29/09/2017 21:33

Please explain the beautiful emails comment before I have to go to sleep!

Pastacube · 29/09/2017 21:33

D & G?

LapinR0se · 29/09/2017 21:34

I thought Hermes but not sure £150 would get you much in there.

HostaFireAndIce · 29/09/2017 21:34

I agree you should have had a better experience regardless, but it sounds like you did the equivalent of going into a high-end restaurant and ordering the cheapest mains and tap water.

MadMags · 29/09/2017 21:34

I can't stand hovering and fawning so I don't think it would bother me. Sorry it was ruined for your dd, though.

yolofish · 29/09/2017 21:34

oh shit!!! erm yes the guessers about M. Luigi Vuitonni were right.
