Or is Jimmy Carr just a misogynist arse hole?

This week I went to see Jimmy Carr's live show. A friend of mine had tickets and asked my go along at the last minute as their mate dropped out. Now I've never really had an opinion on Jimmy Carr, he's just someone I've never paid much attention too, so didn't really know what to expect.

Most of the 2 hours were filled with cracks about rape, special needs children, blind people and women. I came away feeling quite sad that this is what's considered comedy. Friend (male) says I've obviously had a sense of humour bypass, but AIBU in thinking actually it's just not funny and Jimmy Carr is actually just a massive idiot?

Did I say that I find BM or JD funny Hmm

They intended to play or played to a converted crowd not a crowd I am part of

I said I don't believe they should be censored and no I don't judge someone on who they may or may not find funny

derxa · 24/09/2017 13:12

not a crowd I am part of You're part of a crowd which finds jokes about rape funny.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/09/2017 13:20

But go ahead and judge me that's fine

That I do find funny

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/09/2017 13:21

But go ahead and judge me that's fine

That I do find funny

Gottagetmoving · 24/09/2017 13:24

I have no idea what that means

Not surprised.

Gottagetmoving · 24/09/2017 13:29

That is because it doesn't mean anything. It is yet another sententious soundbite supposed to make those of us who "just don't get it" feel thick and those posters who do get it feel good about themselves

No one can 'make' you feel thick. It relates to something in said earlier...and it does mean some thing. You just don't understand it for whatever reason.
It's not about anyone feeling good about themselves. It's a statement so don't belittle something because you lack the ability to understand it.

gluteustothemaximus · 24/09/2017 13:30

I don't think they should make racist jokes, but it seems odd for controversial comedians not to make racist jokes if they are so out there, with no boundaries

Exactly.

TheStoic · 24/09/2017 13:32

You just don't understand it for whatever reason.

The reason is because it's nonsensical.

3EyedRaven · 24/09/2017 13:55

I don't really understand the logic of only laughing at a disablist joke if a disabled person tells it to be honest.
What, do you find the joke funny, but wouldn't feel comfortable laughing if someone else told it?
Or you don't find it funny, but feel obligated to laugh in solidarity with the disabled person?
Or it magically only becomes funny once a disabled person tells it, by the mere fact of their disability?
It's odd logic.

derxa · 24/09/2017 14:21

because you lack the ability to understand it. I don't think Lass is someone who lacks understanding in any sphere tbh.

Arealhumanbeing · 24/09/2017 14:35

YANBU. He's a cunt.

Crowdo · 24/09/2017 14:37

Lass clearly can't understand what it is like to be in someone else's shoes though.

People can't explain why things are funny if someone else doesn't get it. That applies to every type of humour.

Gottagetmoving · 24/09/2017 14:48

The reason is because it's nonsensical

Of course it is....if you don't understand it.

TheLuminaries · 24/09/2017 15:40

Seems to me some people are keen to move the thread on from explaining why they find rape or disablist jokes funny - in fact, I don't know if any posters have actually admitted to laughing at racist or disablist 'jokes'.

Lionso · 24/09/2017 16:16

In answer to the OP's original question. Yes he is both those things without a doubt. The sooner he falls out of favour with TV producers the better. And Frankie Boyle too.

They are the current generation's "Jim Davidson" IMO.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/09/2017 17:20

I can't remember laughing at any particular jokes about rape

But I have laughed at subjects like death, terrorism, domestic violence,
paedophilies, harassment, prejudice

These subjects themselves are not funny but I have heard gags that are funny about these subjects

RedDogsBeg · 24/09/2017 17:44

I agree with others about the odious Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle.

The target of the joke is what is important. Billy Connolly many years ago told a joke/story about paedophile priests - the target of the joke was the Catholic priests and the cover up of their actions by the Catholic Church not the victims of the abuse and it completely skewered those he aimed it at.

I wonder why the oh so intelligent and intuitive JC never tells rape jokes that pillory the perpetrators?

As for the FB joke about Harvey Price, how anyone can seriously defend this I don't know. The target of the joke was a severely disabled child, who certainly wasn't disabled by 'the Government', and who the hell has dark thoughts about a disabled child raping their mother?

RidingWindhorses · 24/09/2017 18:11

I don't really understand the logic of only laughing at a disablist joke if a disabled person tells it to be honest

I've never heard a disablist joke told by a disabled person. I've heard them crack jokes about what it's like to be disabled and take the piss out of themselves, but that's completely different.

RidingWindhorses · 24/09/2017 18:16

I wonder why the oh so intelligent and intuitive JC never tells rape jokes that pillory the perpetrators?

Quite.

Compare with Bill Bailey's description of footballers:

"A bunch of vain illiterate, millionaire, borderline rapists, who's job it is to shepherd a bit of leather into a badly made outdoor cupboard"

BoysofMelody · 24/09/2017 18:18

What boils my piss is that periodically ever so often there will be reports of someone with say, a disability will storm out of a gig by a comedian like Jimmy Carr or Roy Chubby Brown telling off colour jokes about disability and declaring it an outrage and offensive. Presumably there were laughing along to all the jokes about gypsies, gays, immigrants, domestic violence and whichever group the comedian targeted, but if it hits closer to home then 'whoa... I'm out of here'.

Elendon · 24/09/2017 19:01

who the hell has dark thoughts about a disabled child raping their mother?

It really is down to porn, because there is nothing the industry will leave behind.

Some peoples lives must be so devoid of happiness, love and laughter that they find it funny.

Crowdo · 24/09/2017 19:07

"It really is down to porn, because there is nothing the industry will leave behind."

Grin Grin Grin Good one!

Elendon · 24/09/2017 19:15

@Crowdo It's picking your way through viz characters.

Terry Fuckwit anyone?

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 24/09/2017 19:17

I've read some dumb things on MN but referring to Larry David and Seinfeld in the same breath as Boyle and Carr must be worth some sort of prize. Like comparing fossilised shite to diamonds. Yes both come out of the same place but there the similarities clearly end

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 24/09/2017 19:18

Oh and I knew jimmy carr when young and no, op, YANBU. A very fucked up, warped and I suspect still very unhappy person. If he had the decency to keep it to himself I might feel sorry for him.
