Or is Jimmy Carr just a misogynist arse hole?

VioletCharlotte · 23/09/2017 12:08

This week I went to see Jimmy Carr's live show. A friend of mine had tickets and asked my go along at the last minute as their mate dropped out. Now I've never really had an opinion on Jimmy Carr, he's just someone I've never paid much attention too, so didn't really know what to expect.

Most of the 2 hours were filled with cracks about rape, special needs children, blind people and women. I came away feeling quite sad that this is what's considered comedy. Friend (male) says I've obviously had a sense of humour bypass, but AIBU in thinking actually it's just not funny and Jimmy Carr is actually just a massive idiot?

No-one has said they should be censored. Many have said they judge those who find these comedians funny and that it is a sad indictment of society that these vile men can accumulate wealth by mocking the more vulnerable.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/09/2017 11:32

Their whole act is mocking the vulnerable

Really ?

tccat · 24/09/2017 11:38

Not fair to call him a cunt..he lacks the depth and warmth ...

TheLuminaries · 24/09/2017 11:43

Again, EnthusiasmDisturbed no one said their whole act was mocking the vulnerable, but it is certainly part of their act. Instead of trying to pick silly holes, why not tell us what you find so funny about a man who makes jokes at the expense of a disabled child, especially when the joke is made by an able bodied privileged white man?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/09/2017 11:47

The point is that KP will and has exploited her children for her own desire for fame

Timefortea99 · 24/09/2017 11:50

It is okay it seems to make jokes about women, the elderly, the disabled, and about rape but nobody dare make any racist jokes. If they make racist jokes only then will I see this loathsome duo as subversive. Until then I will see them as picking and choosing to offend those who don't have any fight back because it acceptable to mock some groups. (Women are seen as fair game these days in lots of different ways.) Before anybody jumps on me, I don't think they should make racist jokes, but it seems odd for controversial comedians not to make racist jokes if they are so out there, with no boundaries.

TheLuminaries · 24/09/2017 11:50

So that makes it OK for Frankie Boyle exploit her child, to increase his own fame? Nope, not buying it.

TheStoic · 24/09/2017 11:53

The point is that KP will and has exploited her children for her own desire for fame

So other people can exploit her children too for a laugh? How can you think that is OK, let alone funny?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 24/09/2017 11:59

The point is that KP will and has exploited her children for her own desire for fame

Even if she had so what? What gives this obnoxious man the right to point it out in such a vicious manner and for his apologists to fall over themselves to make excuses?

I know almost nothing about people with disabilities. I don't know any one with the level of disability Harvey has or who has a child with that level of disability. I am pleased Katie Price is not hiding Harvey away. I think it is useful to know that even someone with her level of expertise in dealing with the media/PR and personal wealth struggles.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/09/2017 11:59

You don't have to buy it or find it amusing

But his or JC acts are not about exploiting vulnerable people

Russell Peters has offended many as his comedy is often based on stereotypes and his use of accents but many find him hilarious many are those who he mocks

Larry David has really pushed boundaries his use of the word Nazi has offended but again should this be censored

Would you judge someone for finding The Soup Nazi funny

Gottagetmoving · 24/09/2017 12:05

Oh my mistake - it was so much deeper than comments about a disabled boy. By 'celebrities', do you also mean 'comedians

Yes,...it was deeper. By celebrities, I mean any famous person who courts attention by using their children.
He attacks the Invictus games and the royals because of the way the government sends young men to get blown up and lose limbs and then does little to take care of them when they leave the army. They parade those soldiers as heroes but let them down. If you want to be offended try getting offended by that and the way society buys into it.
You know very little about Boyle. That is obvious.

Gottagetmoving · 24/09/2017 12:09

I am pleased Katie Price is not hiding Harvey away

No, she certainly doesn't hide him away...or her other children who she imposes cameras on and subjects to the media constantly in her reality tv shows.

TheStoic · 24/09/2017 12:10

Yes,...it was deeper. By celebrities, I mean any famous person who courts attention by using their children.

So it's terrible for celebrities to 'exploit' their children, but when comedians ridicule those same children it's a deep and meaningful commentary on the state of society?

TheLuminaries · 24/09/2017 12:11

Excellent 'whataboutery' EnthusiasmDisturbed - there are other offensive comedians in the world - who knew?

It doesn't really answer my question about what you, personally, find funny about an able bodied white man mocking a disabled child?

derxa · 24/09/2017 12:11

The point is that KP will and has exploited her children for her own desire for fame So do Peter Andre, Kerry Katona and numerous others. It doesn't excuse a vile joke about rape and a very profoundly disabled child. I wonder what it feels like to actually physically laugh at a joke like that.

MargaretCavendish · 24/09/2017 12:12

I think that's a pretty weak defence of the Frankie Boyle joke. The thing is, the joke wasn't aimed at her, which may indeed have been fair game, it was directly mocked him, a disabled child. No one would have complained if he'd mocked Katie Price as fame-hungry or made a joke about her exploiting her children. But he didn't.

ZenHeadbutt · 24/09/2017 12:17

No-one has said they should be censored

Meh, I'd be quite happy if nasty sick jokes about an actual child who was 8 years and disabled were censored. Some sad fucks might be deprived of a few belly laughs but other than that I can't see a single reason why someone can make money out of being so cruel.

Gottagetmoving · 24/09/2017 12:22

So it's terrible for celebrities to 'exploit' their children, but when comedians ridicule those same children it's a deep and meaningful commentary on the state of society?

I've already said it was cruel. It was shocking...but so is society who create disabilities so many suffer.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/09/2017 12:25

I never said I found that particular comment funny/amusing

Do I think he shouldn't have said it no I don't, does it make me feel uncomfortable absolutely, does KP and many other celebrities using their children as part of their publicity machine make me uncomfortable again absolutely

the humour I like often makes me feel uncomfortable at times the dark side of humanity what we do and don't laugh at and what we should and shouldn't laugh at shouldn't be censored or controlled

TheStoic · 24/09/2017 12:26

I've already said it was cruel. It was shocking...but so is society who create disabilities so many suffer.

I have no idea what that means.

derxa · 24/09/2017 12:28

.but so is society who create disabilities so many suffer. Shock There is so much wrong with that statement I can't even begin...

TheLuminaries · 24/09/2017 12:28

the humour I like often makes me feel uncomfortable at times the dark side of humanity what we do and don't laugh at and what we should and shouldn't laugh at shouldn't be censored or controlled

So racist jokes are OK for you too? Were you a big Bernard Manning fan? Are you one of those than continues to line Jim Davidson's pockets? I may not censor you, but my goodness do I judge you.

Crowdo · 24/09/2017 12:43

This argument is still raging on, but it's not actually possible for people to describe precisely why things are funny. Or why what is funny to one person is cringy or in poor taste to someone else. It's a spontaneous, physiological reaction.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 24/09/2017 12:50

I've already said it was cruel. It was shocking...but so is society who create disabilities so many suffer

I have no idea what that means

That is because it doesn't mean anything. It is yet another sententious soundbite supposed to make those of us who "just don't get it" feel thick and those posters who do get it feel good about themselves.

derxa · 24/09/2017 13:04

I think I'll start going to Roy 'chubby' Brown's gigs and look up Bernard Manning's old shows. Seems like I'll fit right in here.
