To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

they would sell more overpriced hair care crap if they told people to wash their hair daily.

None of my hairdressers have ever tried to sell me anything, when i Asked about a product she told me where i could buy it cheaper.

TickedOff · 23/09/2017 12:52

Nokids, it’s much easier for me to wash, dry and go than faff about on day 2 (as I have tried my best to leave washing every day in the past) with dry shampoo, making sure my double crown is playing ball and not making me look bald, styling up, hating it because of my ears, styling back down but hating the way it looks and feels. It’s actually quicker for me to wash, my hairs really straight so I blast with a dryer and then I’m ready.

Silly - I don't get it wet at all in the shower if I'm not washing it

MiddlingMum · 23/09/2017 14:28

I've washed mine every day for decades. It's not greasy at all, almost the opposite, but it's bound to collect dust etc from everyday life. I just wouldn't feel clean.

I use really cheap "value" shampoo and only a tiny amount so it's mostly water anyway. My hair is soft, shiny and easy to manage.

DJBaggySmalls · 23/09/2017 14:30

Its a myth that not washing your hair somehow affects how much sebum your scalp produces. I wash mine every day, I switch between 2 products so I dont get build up. I dont rub it with a towel or use a hair dryer, and its fine.

Sheridanflamingo · 23/09/2017 14:31

I once didn't wash my hair for 3 months. It was last year - disgusting for first week and after that looked great. I blasted it with cold setting on hairdryer every day and looking back on it it seems disgusting but it didnt smell or look greasy after first week and my hair has been permanently improved. I now wash it once a week but it is tied up in a bun or ponytail for second half of week. It does improve your hair - it did for me anyway.

Jessiecat27 · 23/09/2017 14:57

I wash mine once or maybe twice a week max. Use dry shampoo before bed instead of in the morning, works much better. Your hair is greasy because of all the washing!

DJBaggySmalls · 23/09/2017 15:29

Washing you hair doesnt make it greasy. Hormones do that.
Not washing your hair doesnt work if your hair is so greasy you have to wash it every day.

brasty · 23/09/2017 15:36

If I am beside the seaside, I have to wash my hair in the morning and before I go out in the evening. Otherwise it is simply lanky and greasy looking. But I have very very fine hair.

Polarbearflavour · 23/09/2017 15:40

I wash mine every day. It’s long and I get hot and sweaty and the side bits go lank by the next day!

MissWilmottsGhost · 23/09/2017 16:05

I take a crowded bus everyday in a multicultural area of a large city with people of a variety of hair types and I have never noticed any bad smells, only perfume and deodorant.

Maybe my nose doesn't work properly Confused

But then I only wash my fine hair every other day so maybe I'm the stinky one Hmm

TurquoiseTranquility · 23/09/2017 16:41

kennycat it's normal to lose 100 hairs a day. If you do think you're losing more than you used to tho, there are a dozen possible reasons and I promise, less frequent washing would not be one of them. Hormonal changes, diet, vitamin/mineral deficiencies are much more likely culprits.
I noticed my hair was much less thick than it used to be. I'd always had long hair, down to my waist, but it was looking so sad I had no choice but to cut it to just below the shoulder Sad It's now almost the length it used to be and is a bit thicker but still not as thick as pre-pregnancies. I was recently diagnosed with B12 and iron-deficiency anaemia and apparently I'd had it for aaages so I wonder if that's the cause.
Since having kids, I've gradually gone from washing my hair every 2 days to every 4-6 days. I've noticed that if I plait or do it up, it doesn't look as greasy and I can get away with going unwashed Wink another day or two. For people whose fringe goes greasy (mine used to), try just rinsing the fringe with diluted shampoo.
I also always use a cup when washing hair, splodge of shampoo and lots of water, this way I use less shampoo and get better coverage.

I'd love to go without washing at all but it's quite scary, right? I hope I'll get there in the end, so much better for the environment. And the scalp!

goose1964 · 23/09/2017 17:18

I have thick wavy long hair, I was it twice a week, if I was it more I look like Crystal Tipps (a cartoon character who had triangular hair)

manicmij · 24/09/2017 14:22

Just caught up with this one. I have very fine hair and wash it every day. There is no way I couldn't do this as with being fine sleeping usually crushes my hair into the most glorious mess. I know if you can leave your hair for 6/7 WEEKS it will be gloriously shiny and you won't need to wash ever again. Okay if you have long luxurious locks but not for me. There is absolutely no proof in washing daily is supposed to cause hair loss.

Unicorn81 · 24/09/2017 14:37

Im the same, even using dry shampoo by lunch time day 2 im clawing at my head and feel disgustingly oily. I wash every day using good shampoos and treatments, with heat protection, i never wear hair up because my ears are huge and stick out so i really do need to wash every day

Saysomething88 · 24/09/2017 15:19

The idea of wetting my hair without washing makes me feel funny, but I have done on holiday after swimming etc. And actually I guess it's not so bad. I'm going to try and watch my hair on the 4th day after washing. But perhaps I'll need to warn my colleagues first in case I smell 😝

Saysomething88 · 24/09/2017 15:20

And the amount of times I've itched my head whilst reading this thread Grin

JustWonderingZ · 24/09/2017 21:49

YY to the poster who said that washing her hair a lot less frequently causes more hair to fall out during the shower. I have found this too. Washing my hair every day, there are only a few hairs which are left on my fingers during the shower. However, if I leave it two or, even worse, 3 or 4 days due to extreme tiredness/ circumstances, not only does my scalp itch like mad and not let me sleep at night, but I also pull out SEVERAL clumps of hair during the next hair wash. Definitely noticed that.

Can only make a conclusion what works for one type of hair, does not for another.

I hate this myth that the more you wash your hair the more you need to wash it. If you have fine, oily hair it needs washed daily and that's just that.

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/09/2017 01:18

I'm just amazed at the number of people who are intimately familiar with their friends' and colleagues' washing patterns - and who suffer so much from smelling said friends/colleagues. Let alone that they're able to pinpoint the smell to their hair.

I haven't got the first clue how often my best friend washes her hair, let alone my colleagues. Confused

And I've never smelt anyone's dirty hair.

My olefactory function is seriously deficient, obviously...

JustWonderingZ · 25/09/2017 09:25

Dirty hair has a distinct smell. You can’t mistake it for anything else. And yes, I have smelled dirty hair on people, also stale earwax. That one is pretty disgusting, too.

existentialmoment · 25/09/2017 09:35

I think you can mistake it. Stale earwax? Perhaps if you are licking someones ear, otherwise, I think not.

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/09/2017 09:48

Maybe you just need to give people a bit more personal space.
