To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

Some people go sebum only, which is probably where people experience a smell. It's not easy to get right. You need to get there slowly, so the scalp still gets cleaned while you adjust, before you stop washing it. Water only involves scrubbing the scalp and washing with just water.

julesr21 · 22/09/2017 19:15

If it's greasy wash it - can't understand why anyone would use dry shampoo (unless ill, overslept) it's just adding to the grime imo. Everyone has different hair so what suits one won't suit another surely. You wouldn't go without washing your face if it was greasy so why leave your hair. I can leave mine for a day when I've got lots of highlights as it's drier but once they begin to grow out it's back to daily. TBH I always feel better if I do it daily but sometimes appreciate the extra time I save if not having to do it every day

cabbage67 · 22/09/2017 19:32

Soap and Glory dry shampoo is fab...the best I’ve tried. It also adds volume to you hair

MaggieS41 · 22/09/2017 19:41

Like previous posters advise, washing your hair everyday is making it greasier. Also if the water is too hot it's open your pores, dries your scalp then tries to overcompensate by producing more oil (or something like that!) In the meantime use dry shampoo and go for a clarifying shampoo. As the water here is hard it leaves lots of residue in your hair. I've got a lemon one from holland & Barrett but apparently Argan oil is good and you can get that for a pound at the pound shop! Or there are home remedies that work too if you have the time. Google shampoo for hard water.

I couldn't be arsed washing my hair every day, it takes so long to dry and style. the most I have ever done is every 2 days and now a lot less it doesn't go greasy or grotty in between, it looks fine.

kennycat · 22/09/2017 19:45

I was infested to read this thread a I keep trying to wash my hair less afternoon years and years of washing it daily, it just feels many on day two and if I've managed to get to day 5 with the help of dry shampoo or talc I feel like such a skank. I just don't think my hair type can last long before the grease sets in.
Also, I think my hair is falling out more now I'm washing it less. Is that likely or is that an unrelated thing? Literally day single time I run my fingers in my hair I pull out about 20 and if I brush it there are a lot I the brush.

What can I do about this? Or am I actually moulting? Or menopausal? Age 36.

Hair. Aaaagh. I'd lo to to just shave it all off!

kennycat · 22/09/2017 19:46

I wasn't infested, I was interested 😂

onecrazycook · 22/09/2017 20:00

I have this issue but over time I've got my hair to be ok for three days. The Elvive clay shampoo and conditioner really helps with this. You just need nerves of steel not to give in and wash it to start with

NamedyChangedy · 22/09/2017 20:03

Ah thanks pickle, that makes sense. She definitely talks about co-washing, that will be what I heard. But minimal shampoo anyway, and frequent deep conditioners - she says her hair has never been better.

picklemepopcorn · 22/09/2017 20:13

@kennycat there is a FB page about going no poo which helps with lots of information. I think hair feels like it's falling out because you are not losing it while you wash. IYSWIM. My hair grows much faster on no poo. It's not for the faint hearted though, you have to work at it.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 22/09/2017 20:33

DP is always saying I shouldn't wash my hair every day. I tried leaving it once, got to lunchtime and gave in and washed it. I use garnier ultimate blends and it always feels nice after. Thick and glossy.

kali110 · 22/09/2017 20:34

It's all bollocks re greasy because you wash it too much.
Yes, what would hairdressers know Grin

NameChangeFamousFolk
You can get a co wash by palmers ( and a superdrug own brand but they smell vile)

PurplePillowCase · 22/09/2017 20:39

well, hairdressers want to sell overpriced shampoo and other haircare stuff.

Subtlecheese · 22/09/2017 20:47

So they're telling people to wash their hair less. Not a great sales tactic?
I don't wash my hair very often and only use conditioner. Hairdressers only ever remark on the good condition of my otherwise ordinary hair.

NicolasFlamel · 22/09/2017 21:17

Confused they would sell more overpriced hair care crap if they told people to wash their hair daily..

feeona123 · 22/09/2017 22:30

Try Johnsons baby shampoo - worked a treat with my greasy roots

SunshineLollipopsRainbows25 · 23/09/2017 04:01

dry shampoo!! awesome stuff

Sillysausage123 · 23/09/2017 05:10

What about if you go to the gym a lot and sweat?
Do people not wash hair after getting sweaty?

picklemepopcorn · 23/09/2017 07:27

Scrub and rinse with water, sillysausage!

Capricorn76 · 23/09/2017 07:50

I think the chemicals they put in shampoo actually create issues to do with greasy hair, dandruff etc meaning you have to bug more to 'get rid' of the problem. It's like drinking everyday to make your depression go away not realising the drinking's causing the depression.

Plug123 · 23/09/2017 08:09

Once I did not wash my hair for 3 years, everyone commented how thick and glossy it was, I now wash my hair only when going somewhere special or going on holiday. I have fantastic hair, plus I am in my 50s. See if you can go for a month without washing and see how much better your hair could be. Take the challenge

Blu99 · 23/09/2017 09:36

I’m mixed ethnicity and have afro carribean hair. I can’t wash my everyday, I would be bold Grin I wash mine once or twice a week on average. My full sister has completely different afro hair and has to wash hers every other day.

My nieces are exactly the same. My DD fortunately, has beautiful soft curls that are far more manageable. I currently wash her hair everyday but she’s a toddler and loves making a mess so it’s a must.

hippyhippyshake · 23/09/2017 09:42

I wash my hair once every 7 to 10 days whether it needs it or not.

Sillysausage123 · 23/09/2017 10:28

When people say they don't wash hair every week or so does that mean they don't get their hair wet at all in the shower?
I feel stupid asking but does washing hair include rinsing hair in shower (no shampoo) as I don't know how a poster below managed 3 years with no washing

NoKidsTwoCats · 23/09/2017 10:34

I washed my hair every day until I was about 30. I have now been every other day for three years. Breaking the cycle was hard but I wouldn't go back. The time saving, cost saving, less hassle if you go away somewhere for the night is 100% worth it. My hair is fine on day 2 and I have my repertoire of day one and day two styles as well. Do it, it's liberating!
