To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

It is really up to you. Pay no attention what other people say. Do what you are comfortable with. Even if it means washing hair every other day or even every week .I know some people’s hair are very fragile so it is up to you to decide if it is worth washing every week as water can cause hair breakages.

Branleuse, we are talking about people’s hair. Not armpits or fanny (they function much differently than hair)

I know that when I join a new forum, the first thing I do is viciously defend someone who has been banned for racism on a hair washing thread.

existentialmoment · 21/09/2017 17:47

Nobody said "black people stink". Nobody said "yes, I do mean exactly that". Perhaps you'd like to ask to see the deleted post

I saw them. They were mainly calling me a cunt.

Now as fun as it is having you rant on about how awful I am for pointing out your casual racism, could you move on? You are extremely tedious.

Cameblackbenzleftwhite1 · 21/09/2017 17:49

I've been no pooing for two years and it doesn't smell. You still wash it in hot water and comb to spread the oils it's not like you do nothing!

I used to wash mine every day too, sometimes even twice a day if I was going out and I just didn't get how people could wash it once or twice a week.

Then I had a baby... I just didn't have time to wash it daily, it didn't take long for my hair to adjust and now I wash it twice a week and it rarely looks greasy, super easy to manage.

Honestly ten years ago I'd have never believed it!

TableMirror · 21/09/2017 18:52

I also don't use dry shampoo and I'm a horse rider but helmet hair doesn't ever seem to happen, I just have well behaved hair 😎

PurpleSpaceshipOnesieSpartacus · 21/09/2017 18:58

OP, try googling conditioner only washing (sometimes called co-washing, or curly girl method).

LadyFlumpalot · 21/09/2017 18:59

Does anyone else get painful hair if they let it get overly greasy? I didn't wash my hair for a whole week whilst on a walking/camping holiday and by the end my hair actually hurt when it was moved!

Ktown · 21/09/2017 19:01

I find living in a city that my hair gets dusty so I either have to brush it well or wash it lightly every day.
When out of the city I don't need to.
But I think we have got used to over washing hair and it probably isn't necessary.

Elendon · 21/09/2017 19:09

We over wash everything and fill our houses with false scents.

The biggest problem in the work place is people not washing their hands properly after using the toilet.

Theseaweed · 21/09/2017 19:19

Washing your hair daily does not make you're hair thin. I suppose if you are over styling daily you could get stress breakage.
Some people are just greasy and need to wash their hair daily, others have dryer hair and skin and can go 3 days or so. I seem to find people with fine, but lots of hair, tend to be greasier than coarse hair.

Your hair can't hurt, it's dead, no nerves. Do you mean your scalp?

Elendon · 21/09/2017 19:23

Loxene Shampoo anyone? Brylcream? Adverts for the 70s

Timotei shampoo is now discontinued.

LadyFlumpalot · 21/09/2017 19:26

@existentialmoment - well yes, it is scalp pain but it "feels" like it is your hair hurting. It's a very specific pain as opposed to an itchy scalp or whatever.

HidingUnderARock · 21/09/2017 22:16

Does anyone else get painful hair if they let it get overly greasy? yes, I've always had this, but also when it is brushed or styled in a different direction from usual. I think maybe the greasiness just prevents the hair from bouncing back to where it wants to be.

MaisieDotes · 21/09/2017 22:39

flumpalot yes, I get the hair-pain too! Or I used to in the days that I went to festivals and things. Haven't had it in ages now.

I wash mine every second day. I do believe it's hormone-related. On each of my three pregnancies my hair did not get greasy at all. I would be on day three or four and just no sign of grease whatsoever.

Now I go running every second night so I wash it after that. I used to use loads of conditioner, now I just use a tiny bit and keep it well away from my scalp. Having a fringe makes your hair get greasier quicker too. Possibly because you move it around more with your hands. I'm growing mine out at the moment.

sashh · 22/09/2017 07:18

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders

Have you tried just water to get the sweat out? Just get in the shower and don't use shampoo.

BarbieBarbieBaa · 22/09/2017 09:17

First, what the feck is with all the racist chatter. It’s bloody hair washing! Can people really shoehorn politics and propaganda into a thread like this? Biscuit

Anyway, that vented....

I will stick with washing every other day and try the dry shampoo/washing only fringe. I’ve made it this far and might as well give it a good try.

For those that ask I do zero styling, and don’t even own straighteners! My hair goes up for work every day, and usually at the weekend as it’s reasonably long.

Thanks for all of the (non-twattish) responses Grin

Try using less shampoo op assuming you just splodge it, think someone told me or I read it somewhere that 5 or 10p size amount of shampoo is enough to wash your hair, obviously depends how much hair you have but can add bits at a time to find the right amount.

I tried the no wash with shampoo thing for about a week it coincided with dc getting headlice and I thought I was itchy because I wasn't washing Confused.

I don't use conditioner no matter how little I use it weighs my hair down.

Didn't attempt it again after that.
I have fine short ish hair and wash everyday as it needs styled.

existentialmoment · 22/09/2017 10:42

Hair is a big issue for black women in particular. People saying you are disgusting and you stink needs to be responded to, don't you think?

opheliacat · 22/09/2017 10:45

I'm with you existensial

Esssa · 22/09/2017 10:47

I'm liking the fact I've spotted at least 2 other co washers on this thread. Ollivander you have tempted me into trying the moogoo. Particularly the protein shot as my hair likes gelatin treatments. Your curls are stunning

PseuDenim · 22/09/2017 10:53

Twice a week with expensive shampoo, no conditioner but use a hair oil which I put on when my hair is wet. Never ever have greasy hair any more. Also I agree with all PPs about dry shampoo.
