To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

When I have tried washing just with water and it just seemed to make my hair instantly twice as greasy and refuse to dry.
When my teen son washed his hair just in water he smelled like week-old wet washing, really bad and strong.
Are we missing something?

I don't use hair products apart from shampoo and conditioner, and just let it dry naturally and then brush when ready.

Also this made me laugh lots I've been no pooing for two years and it doesn't smell. sorry Blush

Thisisnotreallymyname · 22/09/2017 17:39

I used to wash my hair everyday in the shower - but find it has more body if I just wet it everyday and only wash it twice a week.
Same as when I shower, I wash my ' bits and pits' everyday but only soap my arms etc twice a week.
Otherwise you wash all your natural oils off and ruin the natural ph balance of your skin.

oldlaundbooth · 22/09/2017 17:41

It's all bollocks re greasy because you wash it too much.

Just wash it every day.

falange · 22/09/2017 17:47

Washing your hair every day won’t make it greasy. However, heat from a dryer or straighteners every day may damage it. Use a gentle shampoo if you want to wash it every day. Eat lots of protein, don’t have it tightly tied back all the time and your hair will be ok.

brasty · 22/09/2017 17:54

Honestly it depends on your hair. I wash my hair every day. Tried leaving it to every second day for ages, but just looked a greasy mess on second day. Now I am t work, I can't go in like that.
Ignore everyone and do what works for you.

browneyes77 · 22/09/2017 18:02

I think it depends on your hair type as others have said. The reason they generally say why not to wash your hair daily is because it strips your hair of it’s natural oils which makes the hair drier and more prone to breakage.

But if you have fine hair then it’s hard not to wash it daily as it tends to get greasier quicker.

Doramaybe · 22/09/2017 18:22

Just do what makes you feel good about yourself. X

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 22/09/2017 18:23

I have waist length, medium thickness hair. I don't wash it every day, usually every 3 to 4 days. My hair doesn't smell, I have very trusted friends and family members who I trust to tell me 'you stink', the same as I would them - gently but honestly! I couldn't wash it every day as a) I don't have the time, b) it takes an age to dry properly and c) It gets greasy much quicker

I find it depends on the shampoo and conditioner I use. I currently use 3 different types, I use each one for around 2 weeks, switch to another one, then back to another one. I don't use a hair dryer unless desperately need to go out somewhere, I usually wash and plait my hair before bed and let it dry naturally. The three brands/variations I use are good for my hair, others sometimes leave my hair very greasy and lank, some others strip my hair so bad that I may as well use washing up liquid.

Personally, I don't put conditioner anywhere near my head, just from the nape of my neck downwards, making sure the ends are coated and rinsed properly. I also shampoo twice.

I always receive compliments on my hair, even though I think it's quite low maintenance.

Dustbunny1900 · 22/09/2017 18:24

I have a greasy flakey scalp yet thick coarse dry hair ( I think grease is largely genetic)
So I just give the scalp a good scrubbing and leave the ends. Even when I wash my whole head I first coat my (dry) hair in conditioner and let it sit before scrubbing scalp with shampoo and rinsing all of it out.
For those with dry or curly hair, pre-pooing is a life saver! Your hair ends suffer from hygral damage from water expansion and shrinkage so putting oil or condish on first really helps.

picklemepopcorn · 22/09/2017 18:27

Whatever the reason, my hair doesn't need washing as often since I've been no poo.

I'm going to try oiling the ends of my hair before washing, that may well help!

ThatWhiteElephant · 22/09/2017 18:28

My hair dresser too says that washing hair everyday makes it more greasy. My hair doesn’t get greasy at all (washed about once a week). Once I left it for 3 weeks (very bad illness) no dry shampoo either and it looked fine!!

NameChangeFamousFolk · 22/09/2017 18:29

Not washing your hair every day is rank and grim

Rubbish. I know LOADS of people who wash it two or three times a week and they really, really don't smell.

What on earth do you think happened to hair overnight? Does your lifestyle involves dipping your head in chip fat every evening?

Fine, if you're doing a hardcore workout, a 15 k run or swimming or something - totally different. But a normal lifestyle minus any of those factors or similar really shouldn't cause someone to suddenly smell 'rank' or 'grim.'

Madness.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 22/09/2017 18:30

eta also depends on the shampoo and conditioner

My husband washes his every day as he does really stink from work haha

I've just asked my son what my hair smells like now and he said 'fresh', I honestly can still smell my shampoo/conditioner on my hair despite washing it on Wednesday night. :/ Maybe we're all 'noseblind' and need febreze Wink Wink Wink

Hulababy · 22/09/2017 18:32

I was mine every day. It doesn't get greasy. But I have scalp psoriasis (though its a lot better at present due to my arthritis meds) and if I don't wash my hair my scalp gets very itchy and uncomfortable, and I can get a build up of the white flakes of skin - so not nice for me.

My hair is in excellent condition and always has been. My hairdresser(s) comment on it regularly. Its soft, clean, not dry or greasy, no heavy products used (just a bit of serum before drying) and no harsh colours (just some half head highlights once every 3-4 months or so.)

NamedyChangedy · 22/09/2017 18:34

I thought 'no poo' just meant washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo!? Not no washing at all!? My sister only uses shampoo every couple of weeks but she's still washing her hair every other day, just with less lather.

Charolais · 22/09/2017 18:36

I have always washed my hair everyday and just let it air dry. I just run my fingers through it and it styles it’s self. Funny thing but the rain always makes my hair look lovely when it dries. Lots of ringlets.

TickedOff · 22/09/2017 18:37

I have very fine, straight hair AND a double crown. If I don't wash it every day it look bloody awful and I don't want to wear it up as I hate my ears so it gets washed daily!

It all depends what hair type you have, surely. Some hair types just can't get away with the once a week wash Envy

TickedOff · 22/09/2017 18:38

A plus point though, a quick blast of the hairdryer and I'm done. No straighteners needed, just a bit of hairspray and I'm out of the house.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 22/09/2017 18:39

We wash our bodies daily so why not our hair and scalp? I can't stand my hair if it's not washed. Even at my advanced age it gets greasy quickly. And I get spots on my scalp too.

If I have to use a dry spoo I like Philip Kingsley's from M&S.

NameChangeFamousFolk · 22/09/2017 18:42

A friend washes her hair in silicone -free conditioner, no shampoo. It's called co-washing. She was told by her hairdresser to treat her hair like a fragile fabric. Her hair always looks and smells amazing.

LoislovesStewie · 22/09/2017 18:44

I've washed my hair every day for , well oodles of years, it became greasy when I hit puberty , and I mean very, very greasy, post menopause my hair is no longer greasy but just very soft . it didn't thin out after pregnancy but I did go gray early! i have no answers but I know I really couldn't stand the oil slick so just carried on washing.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/09/2017 18:55

I have very thick but dryish hair and try not to wash it more than once every 5-7 days - more than that makes it too dry. My eldest has the same long, thick hair but curly with it but it was oilier.

He found going silicon free for shampoo/conditioner improved it dramatically and whilst its not as dry as mine its not oily either.

imjessie · 22/09/2017 18:57

Try co washing with a paraben free shampoo . I only co wash my curly hair like this and it's super soft !

picklemepopcorn · 22/09/2017 18:59

@NamedyChangedy , washing in conditioner alone is called co poo, or co washing (Conditioner only).
No poo is using no products, so water only, bicarbonate, vinegar, oats, egg, gelatine and so on. Oh poo is using a soap type product.

Low poo is using a product free of silicon, sulphates etc.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 22/09/2017 18:59

I've heard that if you don't wash your hair for about 6 weeks it returns to its natural self cleaning state and you never have to wash it again. I'd love to try it but need to become a hermit first!
