Just been scrolling through FB and come across a post where there are genuine people with genuine beliefs that the Earth is flat.

I honestly believed it was just a joke and that people were taking the piss. Apparently not!

AIBU to ask what the craziest beliefs you've come across in British modern society?

OP posts:

On another note an Irish family member of mine thought that Giant's Causeway was in fact caused by giants throwing rocks at one another. They refused to believe this wasn't the case up until last year after a few history lessons from Google. Apparently this was taught at school!!!

That's the legend surrounding giants causeway, there's a visitors building there with all the history of the causeway and they even show a film about the 2 giants, who made giants causeway.Grindoes your relative also still believe in santa 🎅

Whiterabbitears · 18/09/2017 17:34

That Brexit will result in the NHS getting 350million a week

Grin This! Anyone who believed that is a numbskull

A few years ago I had a hugely entertaining afternoon waiting in having new French windows fitted. The guy fitting them was convinced of do much. There was a lot to do with pyramids and aliens as well as Prince Philip having personally ordered a new hit on Princess Diana. Best of all though was The Great Secret.

At amy one time only 5 people know The Great Secret and The Truth About All History. One of these 5 was Michael Jackson and that's why he was murdered because he was never meant to have been in the know.

A woman was talking loudly on her phone in new look saying 'of course the Parsons Green attack was false, it was to distract us from the Grenfell enquiry....'.

tehmina23 · 18/09/2017 19:23

Also my hairdresser who is just 22 so left school a lot more recently than I did believes that Ww2 was in the 1990s..

I put her straight very gently because I didn't want to upset her, but seriously don't kids get history lessons these days?

Userwhocouldntthinkofagoodname · 18/09/2017 20:11

There was a thread on here a long time ago about white feathers. Apparently every time you see a white feather it is left by an angel and is a sign. Of what I have no idea.

Fekko · 18/09/2017 20:13

Dappled - he doesn't also do general carpentry does he? We had one in to fix the kitchen and he was whittling on about pyramids and god knows what. I got sucked in to politely listening as he started out so normal (they often do).

Maudlinmaud · 18/09/2017 20:25

Oh yes. I know someone who believes aliens built the pyramids or put them there or some such shit. I did pretend I was interested to be polite because that's expected but now I zone out completely. Tbh that relationship exhausts me.

It's a sign that there's a dead pigeon not far away.

It is because their interpretation of the Bible. They feel in order to have faith, they have faith the Bible is of God

Mittens1969 · 18/09/2017 20:50

That is not what all Christians believe, not at all. A lot of us are highly embarrassed by what such people believe. It's because of their literal understanding of the early chapters of Genesis, which is not intended. After all, apparently light was created on the first day, but the sun, moon and stars on the fourth day. Clearly not meant to be literally true.

But, FYI, creationists don't believe that the Earth is actually flat. It's not something I've ever heard taught anyway.

WingsofNylon · 18/09/2017 20:54

When did they change to CHEMtrails? I'm my day they were CONtrails? Have I missed a good conspiracy?

RainyApril · 18/09/2017 20:57

I think contrail is the actual proper noun for the vapour trail from a plane. Chemtrail is the one hilariously used by conspiracy theorists.

WingsofNylon · 18/09/2017 21:04

Rainy you are so wise.

RainyApril · 18/09/2017 21:10

I have a conspiracy theorist in the family, know more than I should about chemtrails, 9/11, fake NASA and other big conspiracies believed by the sheeple. Funny how the people clever enough to see through it to the truth always still live at home with their mum.

Twofurrycats · 18/09/2017 21:11

I love listening to a genuine flat earther. Basically it doesn't matter what reasoning you use with them you've been fooled by 'them'. To what purpose? The best reason I heard was basically that there are huge reserves of oil/gold/anything expensive/desirable in the edges near the giant ice walls (to stop cats pushing things off). And it's down to price control by 'them' that we can't know about it.
Chemtrails are mixed in with mass depopulation theory. I was not very popular when I pointed out that you can't be a ruling elite with nobody to rule!

PorpoisefullyObtuse · 18/09/2017 21:16

A lady who I work with is a young earther, her husband is both a flat earther and a young earther. They will not leave the U.K. as her husband "doesn't know where the edge is" and they don't want to accidentally fall off.

Bambamber · 18/09/2017 21:17

A jehovas witness was trying to convince me of the existence of angels the other day. The conversation came round to evolution (can't remember how) but apparently evolution isn't real because it serves no purpose Hmm

RainyApril · 18/09/2017 21:21

I'm convinced this nonsense is made up by people as a big joke before being released into the world and blindly believed by fools. I like to imagine the architects scrolling through social media and laughing like drains. You've only got to look at the stuff shared on Facebook as fact to know how easy it is to make people believe stuff.

Albadross · 18/09/2017 22:16

Some guy told me that the Grenfell Tower fire never happened, that everyone interviewed on Tv was a crisis actor. I asked him if I was also an actor and he said 'you were never on TV', except I was - after the riots, constantly for about a week!

brasty · 18/09/2017 22:45

The ones that annoy me, are the crazy ones about vaccines.Such as don't have x vaccine as the Government has put toxins in it

Willow2017 · 18/09/2017 23:03

ITS TRUE!

Beneath Bouvetøya, an island about one thousand miles off the coast of Antarctica there is a pyramid buried 2000 feet beneath the ice. The alien beings found there have been visiting Earth for thousands of years. It was they who taught early human civilizations how to build pyramids, and were worshiped as gods. Every 100 years they visited Earth to take part in a rite of passage by which several humans sacrifice themselves as hosts for other aliens, creating the "ultimate prey" for the first aliens to hunt. We are just breeding vessels for these Gods.

Its true, its true I tell you I have seen the documentary film

Willow2017 · 18/09/2017 23:06

Just when you thought you had heard it all a new level of idiocy appears!
Have they seen a map? They are flat, might give them a clue Smile

Blahblahblahhhhhhh · 18/09/2017 23:08

My fil is a flat earther. He's also a jehovas witness and believes no planes flew into the twin towers the moon landing was fake and that Hitler was misunderstood . He is also a complete cock. I just smile. Nod and pitty my mil for almost 50 years with this dick. My dh would rather drink his own piss than converse with him on these subjects.

NachoAddict · 18/09/2017 23:20

The conspiracy theorists that I know are always pot heads too. They believe that cannabis can cure all cancer but the pharmaceutical industry want to keep it quiet as it is bad for business.
