Just been scrolling through FB and come across a post where there are genuine people with genuine beliefs that the Earth is flat.

I honestly believed it was just a joke and that people were taking the piss. Apparently not!

AIBU to ask what the craziest beliefs you've come across in British modern society?

When fossil pioneer Mary Anning was unearthing big marine reptile fossils in Dorset (early 1800s) the old locals would say the devil had put them there to 'maze men's minds'.

And some still think the same.

My dd was working in Aceh after the devastating tsunami, and more than one of the local imams said it was all down to Allah being mad with them. What needed to happen was for the ungodly cinema and swimming pool to be closed - that would stop it happening again. Nowt to do with geology.

Has anyone seen the Jim Jefferies episode where he gets a bunch of conspiracy theorists together and chats with them? Even they end up arguing and trying to debunk one another's theories as bollocks Grin

CaveMum · 18/09/2017 12:57

An ex-work colleague was adamant that Princess Diana had been "murdered by the Establishment" Hmm no amount of pointing out that, if you're going to bump someone off, a car crash on a public road probably isn't the most effective way of going about it would convince her otherwise.

CloudPerson · 18/09/2017 12:59

There were two or three epically long threads about yoi g earth creationism a few years ago.
An American pastor (I think?) came on to mansplain about how it all worked.
IIRC dinosaurs and man co-existed, and dinosaurs are mentioned in the bible (behemoths?).

It was an entertaining and truly bonkers.

I'm unsure what's kicked this all off again, but around my area I've noticed a lot of bridges/signs etc with Flat Earth graffiti written over them now.

On another note an Irish family member of mine thought that Giant's Causeway was in fact caused by giants throwing rocks at one another Confused They refused to believe this wasn't the case up until last year after a few history lessons from Google. Apparently this was taught at school!!!

streetface · 18/09/2017 13:38

Polkadotty I heard that when I was indoctrined as a child by my best friends mother. I was a full on JW until my mum found out and stepped in. They are creationists and I can assure you I was taught that Adam and Eve were the very first living things and dinosaurs came after and scientists were wrong

Catwithglasses · 18/09/2017 13:39

YY to chemtrails. Never heard the term until acquaintances starting sharing 'facts' about them. It's hilarious until I remember they also have kids who aren't getting vaccinated because of 'all the crap the nurses want to pump into them'.

Saw a really funny tweet the other day.

The Flat Earthers tweeted (something like): There are people all around the world who believe in a flat Earth

Someone responded: Read what you just wrote, slowly

Ha!

streetface · 18/09/2017 13:47

In fact, I have just checked the watchtower website to see if the Jehovahs have changed their tune about dinosaurs and apparently, humans and dinosaurs existed at the same time, Adam and Eve were first, the dinosaurs were wiped out by human sin and most of them drowned in Noah's flood.

Fossils are misunderstood by the scientists. Confused

Yup, still as crazy as ever.

streetface · 18/09/2017 13:49

Ellie I saw that too. It actually said, there are people all around the GLOBE who know the earth is flat.

Err read that back to yourself...slowly Grin

EllieMArroway · 18/09/2017 13:51

Wow. Even worse! Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/09/2017 13:53

Hope you've cleared you cookies (or whatever it is) streetface or your system is going to be clogged with that shite :o

My friend's Mum got in tow with the JWs and she ended up having to celebrate Christmas on Boxing day every year. Her DM still wanted all the fuss and fancy meal but made everyone shift it a day forward to fit in with her beliefs.

WaxOn I was just about to look up the alien invasion and which people are lizards in Scientology....

Might give that a miss now.

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/09/2017 14:11

Best just text John Travolta instead :o

Maudlinmaud · 18/09/2017 14:17

I thought it was David Icke who came up with the Lizard people/reptilian overlords?

ShowMePotatoSalad · 18/09/2017 14:20

This is a seriously random one but my mum absolutely refuses to accept that Nigel Slater is gay. I don't know why, and I don't know why she cares enough to make it into a thing. She actually phoned me once to say she was watching his programme and his wife was in it, "so there". When I next saw them we were all having a joke about it yet my mum was still adamant. My dad told me the woman on his programme wasn't his wife at all, it was just a woman with an allotment, and she was just showing Nigel her tomatoes. I then made a joke out of it and my mum went really cross and serious, and said "NO. It. Was. His. WIFE!" like that. My mum is a bit potty in lots of ways really but her adamant belief that Nigel Slater is not gay is probably the strangest one.

ethelfleda · 18/09/2017 14:22

AIBU to ask what the craziest beliefs you've come across in British modern society?

That all Muslims are terrorists.

streetface · 18/09/2017 14:23

Ah yes Maud I think you're right. Scientologists believe aliens started the planet and we all stem from one alien or some similar twattery. I'm getting my shape shifting lizards and alien creators all cufuddled Grin

magicstar1 · 18/09/2017 14:25

I recently discovered that my FIL is a Holocaust denier. Apparently the Holocaust never happened...a few thousand were killed of course, but the figures have been exaggerated and most footage is made up.

I had a row with him and told him never to bring it up with me again.

PoirotsMoustache · 18/09/2017 14:29

Having been a JW for almost the entirety of my life, with most of my family still active in the religion, I can assure you they do not believe Adam and Eve co-existed with the dinosaurs. They believe God created dinosaurs first, they died out, and then he created other animals and Adam & Eve.
Not sure which website you went to?

Natsku · 18/09/2017 14:33

I'm a card carrying member of the Flat Earth Society (I mean I have an actual membership card and carry it in my purse) Grin I'll let you in on a secret though, most don't actually believe, its an exercise in debating an impossible position and making up fun conspiracy theories. But don't tell anyone I told you that...

EllieMArroway · 18/09/2017 14:37

I'm torn between really liking that, Natsku and being a bit disappointed :)

RedGrapeCornSnake · 18/09/2017 14:42

There was a thread on here a while back started by someone who was a member of Christians against Dinosaurs. The thread was someone up in arms about their child being exposed to the 'dinosaur lies' or something to that effect. It was a most entertaining thread!

SlackerMum1 · 18/09/2017 14:43

That Australia isn't real.... apparently (according to a Swedish Facebook 'personality') is a massive conspiracy to cover up the 19th century genocide of British criminals.... any 'Australians' you think you know are actors or AI generated... and all airline pilots are in on the con so if you think you've been to Australia you actually haven't (areas of South America have been 'cleared' as some kind of giant stage set).... which can only lead me to assume that kangaroos and koalas are also fictional which personally the most upsetting thing about the whole situation....
