Teaching your children about Egalitarianism, not just Feminism.

I've just seen a post about a child's T shirt saying Feminism on it, -
although I do see the point and do think it's a lovely idea to promote Feminism - sadly the truth is it will spark up debate with those who are passionate about Feminism (and those who will wonder why on earth you are 'showing off') while you are out shopping which can cause upset while in public and could escalate in front of your children.

My question is, do you really want to put yourself and your children in that situation? And my advice is, why not try "Egalitarianism" instead.

Not many people are aware that there are different types of Feminism as there are different believes but all believe in equality for women, and personally for me, Feminism has been blown out of portion thanks to social media.

Egalitarianism refers to political movements like socialism, communism and anarchism.

Not all feminists are egalitarians. Some are conservatives, neo liberals etc.

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 18/09/2017 13:37

That whatever some people like to pretend 'feminism' currently means, it certainly doesn't mean the same to the majority of men and women.

Well, OK, but I for one am happy to be a feminist, because I know that how they define it is wrong. Lots of people use white sauce to make Carbonara in the UK, doesn't mean that they're right, or that Italians should stop calling what they make 'Carbonara'

SylviaPoe · 18/09/2017 13:39

You can actually get a t-shirt that says 'my marxist feminist dialectic brings all the boys to the yard.'

But that's adults only, obviously.

backOffSunshine · 18/09/2017 13:42

"Well, OK, but I for one am happy to be a feminist, because I know that how they define it is wrong"

Words tend to be defined in dictionaries by use by the masses (see 'Literally').

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 18/09/2017 13:45

Ah, well, in that case it's fine.

We must all believe the same.

I thought people were suggesting that the majority of people thought feminist meant 'hairy, dungaree-wearing, man-hating, lesbian who's working towards men being enslaved and women getting all the good stuff' - but since no dictionary says that, I must have entirely mis-understood what was being said here about the definition of Feminism.

backOffSunshine · 18/09/2017 13:49

Wine?

Gin?

Natsku · 18/09/2017 14:04

...If, on the other hand, if you want to stop those practices for women, that would be called feminism.

Excellent post Datun

I think its unfair for someone to start a thread about a t-shirt without linking to said t-shirt and where we can buy it - DD wants another feminist t-shirt

EBearhug · 18/09/2017 14:12

I don't think it's compulsory to wear dungarees these days, Spaghetti.

Datun · 18/09/2017 14:16

Today 13:49 backOffSunshine

Wine?

Gin?

Okay that explains it.

LonginesPrime · 18/09/2017 14:43

and those who will wonder why on earth you are 'showing off'

Lols at showing off by wearing a t-shirt..

What would one be showing off, exactly?

(1) The fact they have the means to buy a t-shirt?
(2) The fact they can read?
(3) The fact they support feminism?

Anyone can do (3), so they must be showing off about (1) or (2).

PricklyBall · 18/09/2017 14:57

EEBearhug: "I don't think it's compulsory to wear dungarees these days."

NOW you tell me! All those wasted years. And them things is a bugger to wear, I tell you. They don't suit me, you can't go to the bloody loo, and worst of all, no-one can see your t-shirt slogans when you're wearing them.

(As a side note, has anyone noticed the OP hasn't been back. Funny, that.)

Sallystyle · 18/09/2017 15:01

Can someone point me in the right direction of the T-shirts please?

TurnipCake · 18/09/2017 15:03

I find Feminist Apparel excellent for all my public upset and escalation needs Grin

Coffeetasteslikeshit · 18/09/2017 15:08

Whilst the vast majority of men and women believe in sexual equality, feminism as a movement is dead and buried and doing women a disservice

Did somebody seriously just write that, read it back to themselves, and think yes, that's exactly what I want to say?!

Yes, feminism is doing a HUGE disservice to women around the world who enjoy having their clitoris cut out, been married off to old men, etc etc etc etc.

Also, am I the only one who's quite chuffed at being described as 'on the fringes' and 'radical'? I've never been so edgy!

Datun · 18/09/2017 15:19

I'm still wondering how something that is dead and buried is still managing to do a disservice.

PhilODox · 18/09/2017 15:34

What a great analogy, spaghetti (the carbonara). You should have seen what British people cooked/served as "curry" 40 years ago...

Coffeetasteslikeshit · 18/09/2017 15:46

This t-shirt should do the trick, no scope for getting confused about what feminism actually is:

existentialmoment · 18/09/2017 15:47

Feminism has been blown out of portion thanks to social media

You what?

BeyondNoone · 18/09/2017 15:48

Forgot to say this is yet another example of people thinking that "radical" feminism means "extremist". If I even create a time machine, the first thing I'll do is go back and rename it!!

I have a dungaree dress. Weird feminist/anti feminist juxtaposition going on... Grin

Coffeetasteslikeshit · 18/09/2017 15:48

although I prefer this one:

www.zazzle.co.uk/feminism_definition_tee-235422822848333180

BeyondNoone · 18/09/2017 15:51

See, now the bib bit of my dungarees would cover any text. Didn't think that through, did they - what with all feminists wearing them!

backOffSunshine · 18/09/2017 16:04

I assumed this was the t shirt you were looking for.

Teaching your children about Egalitarianism, not just Feminism.
Datun · 18/09/2017 16:15

You've really got to ask yourself when people call feminism, amongst other things, a turn off, that's it's killed itself, an insult, idead and buried, (but still doing a disservice), poisonous and holding back equality, pretend, negative, childish and simple, why they are then confused that the reaction is are you an MRA?

And of course, no one is surprised that the answer to that is cunt.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 18/09/2017 17:39

I suggest we ignore the MRA. Its goal is to derail a discussion about feminism, so let's not give it what it wants.

whompoleSaily · 19/09/2017 01:19

DailyMailReadersAreThick

"It" ie. not even human? That's horrible.

It seems like the MRA accusation is towards the OP. The person who's been roundly attacked (BackOffSunshine) hasn't been accused of daring to have MRA views; they asked why it was such a terrible thing to do.
