Teaching your children about Egalitarianism, not just Feminism.

I've just seen a post about a child's T shirt saying Feminism on it, -
although I do see the point and do think it's a lovely idea to promote Feminism - sadly the truth is it will spark up debate with those who are passionate about Feminism (and those who will wonder why on earth you are 'showing off') while you are out shopping which can cause upset while in public and could escalate in front of your children.

My question is, do you really want to put yourself and your children in that situation? And my advice is, why not try "Egalitarianism" instead.

Not many people are aware that there are different types of Feminism as there are different believes but all believe in equality for women, and personally for me, Feminism has been blown out of portion thanks to social media.

"The argument is about wether feminism slogans should be replaced with equality ones"

But that is a meaningless argument, since "feminism slogans" are not about women wanting to have far more rights and opportunities than men.

It is and has always been about equality with men. We don't want to be paid more than men for doing the same job. We want equal pay. We don't want all board members and scientists to be women. We want equal opportunities for women and an end to work place discrimination so that there can be equal representation in the upper echelons.

But when you're talking about quotas for board members, that isn't equality. It isn't about equal opportunity where men and women are seen as equal, it's about stacking the odds in favour of women; not equality.

If I tell you you must employ 6 people and at least 3 must be women then that isn't equality. It's more rights than men.

In what ways don't we have equal* opportunities?

*I left your word 'equal' there but really, equal would be a step down when looking at exam or employment stats.

Men seem to have managed with being unfairly promoted over women all these years. Why weren't they working on equality? What with them having all the power and all.

Report
Datun · 19/09/2017 18:58

When the very word woman now includes people with penises, I don't see how you can possibly say we have equality. We can't even name our cohort.

Because, guess what, the word man now includes people with vaginas. Has that make a blind bit of difference to men? No it hasn't. They couldn't give a toss.

Because the power dynamic is not equal in the first place.

Men can take over, quite legitimately, all the feminist platforms. And have. And stopped women talking about women, using violence. Where are the women taking over the men's platforms? Where are the women beating the men in sport?

Where are all the 30-year-old men being subject to the mummy penalty? Because plenty of women, who remain childless, are subject to it anyway.

When I am even allowed to define the word woman as someone who has XX chromosomes, without a man telling me I should be raped for that opinion, then I will talk to you about equality.

"What with them having all the power and all."

Like the most powerful 2 people in our country? HRM and TM.

When has that ever happened? Screenshots will be fine.

If you think the queen has any real power you are deluded. I'm not getting into structures and how women who rise alone are part of the system. Because there's no point. It's feminism 101 and if you had the slightest idea, you'd already know these things.

Report
whompoleSaily · 19/09/2017 19:38

And condescending comments which excuse any kind of intelligent response are keyboard-warrior feminism 101.

I think you're very slightly deluded. You even tried to coin the "Pratchett test" in this thread. Have you heard of Wheaton's Law? It would do you good.

"Women who rise alone are part of the system" ... and the system = patriarchy ... with women at the top ... who are part of the system ... which keeps women down ... 'cause men ...

your world must be a strange and confusing one Terry.

Yes. I dont know what the healthy amount is.
If you try to reeducate me about it, try not to be so condescending. It makes you look like a hypocrite given your previous comments.

What point were you making with those images DJ? That bad men exist?

I would feel foolish if I posted images from the killallmen hashtag trends on twitter as it proves nothing other than fringe minorities are up to no good. Hardly comment-worthy.

I asked Datun a question and people jumped in to answer for her.

I think maybe I've got my pronouns confused. Not in a "I-hate-self-identification" type way but genuinely confused about the use of "I" and "we" on this thread.

Well unless you're expecting datun to share her own info and screenshots, we only jumped in to demonstrate what she would be demonstrating? Confused

I feel like you want to win an argument here, but you aren't entirely sure what that argument is.

I would also like to see a huge increase in spending on education. It has been shown - all around the world - to be a magic bullet when it comes to empowering females. Very few things have been shown to work as well.

I see no reason we can't come together on these things: education, childcare, housing, healthcare and a basic income.

EamonnWright · 19/09/2017 20:22

You know what, eamonn? I think most of the feminists you'll find on MN would agree with a lot of that. Not that feminism is a busted flush, but that too many younger women have rather lost their way (perhaps in large part due to wanting to be seen as equalists?).

Possibly although I think the times we live in play a part. No one wants to offend so no one wants to be labelled a 'phobia'. I personally don't give a shit if I'm labelled Transphobic. My daughter's safety is far more important to me than someone's feelz. It's that simple.

How as a society have we got to the point where a rapist can be housed alongside some if the most abused and vulnerable people in society (women prisoners)?

I've been called terf on twitter in the last five minutes, it's hardly a fringe minority using it. Did the see the articles this week where a woman was assaulted and when they papers reported it they used 'terf' to describe her?
