It seems, Natsku, that they don't know yet what caused the North Korean earthquakes. (Data 'still being analysed'.)

Trump is being un presidential on twitter again Hmm I don't follow American football at all so I have no idea of what's going on - Trump appears to have declared war on footballers (maybe just black footballers?). Clearly there's a lot of background to the whole thing, the footballers aren't being shy in tweeting right back at Trump, I'm glad to say.

THREAD. So there's buzz that Manafort is "going out of town" (I wonder to where?). If that speeds up an indictment, keep 👀 out for this:

  1. Mueller has apparently let Manafort know he is going to be indicted. Mueller doesn't make idle threats. But note he didn't say by whom.
  2. If Mueller is worried about a pardon from POTUS (or Manafort is expecting one), the play here is for NY AG Schneiderman to indict FIRST
  3. This is because if feds go first and POTUS pardons, NY AG might lose his chance to bring state charges under NY law
  4. I've written before that a legal principle called Dual Sovereignty allows states 2 prosecute same conduct as feds
thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/the-administration/348989-trump-may-dodge-federal-crimes-with-pardons-but-he-cant?amp
  1. But as *@jedshug* writes here, some states have laws that prevent dual prosecutions, and NY is one of them
www.justsecurity.org/44704/states-trump-trumps-pardons-state-prosecutions-money-laundering-hacking-conspiracy-tax-fraud/
  1. So if feds go first, POTUS pardons, then NY AD is SOL. But if NY goes first, there's no problem, and pardon can't touch it.
  2. And tho *@jedshug* can weigh in I think feds still preserve ability to prosecute after NY if they want (tho pardon issue still there)

lettuce It's basketball, not football if you're talking about Steph Curry. The football brou ha ha is about certain football players 'taking a knee' during the national anthem. Scrotus says they should all be 'fired'. Idiot.

The Golden State Warriors won the basketball championship and were invited to the White House. Per usual, championship teams are invited to the White House to meet the Pres. The team members had been thinking about whether to accept the invite or not in light of Scrotus' remark about Colin Kaepernick & #takeaknee and Steph Curry (a very nice man and an unbelievable talent!!) said that no matter what the team decided, he was not going. Scrotus' gets wind of it and 'disinvites' Steph. After Steph said he wasn't going. So typical! "If you don't play my way, I'll take my ball and go straight home!!"

www.nytimes.com/2017/09/23/sports/football/trump-nfl-kaepernick.html

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 23/09/2017 22:37

across would the kaepernick issue be a case of violation of first amendment rights? The president saying someone should be fired because of something as inoffensive (although I appreciate hugely symbolic) seems like a massive transgression but I'm not up enough on my amendments to be confident I've understood this properly

lettuceWrap · 23/09/2017 23:34

Football, basketball, all the same to me Grin. Interesting article, thanks.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/09/2017 01:41

Pain, to tell you the truth I'm not sure. Certainly we all have 1st amendment rights, but it's understood that employers do have the right to 'limit' what you can say on 'duty time'. If Kaepernick's 'employer' (the team or NFL) doesn't have a problem with him taking a knee, then that takes care of that issue. I'm sure the teams and the NFL wouldn't allow the Hitler salute, the middle finger, or for a player to engage in 'hate speech'. That would definitely get them fired or at least suspended. I think it says a lot that they seem to if not condone, at least not to condemn taking a knee.

Scrotus was way, way out of line advocating for teams to 'fire' players for their political beliefs. On one hand even the POTUS has 1st amendment rights, but most of them also have had a sense of time, place, and decorum and would never get involved in something like this, let alone make such inflammatory statements. But as we know, Scrotus appears to consider himself above the law and above the 'rules' that govern a democratic society. And he certainly knows how to play to his 'audience'.

A small query for our Americsn posters. Why does Amy Siskind write "$19mm" and "3.5mm Puerto Ricans"? Is a double M a convention in the USA if there are multiple millions involved? Here in the UK, $19m would be sufficient.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 24/09/2017 10:11

across thank you! I thought the crux of the first amendment right was that it was the freedom to say what you wanted (hate speech aside) without any intereference or suppression from the government. So people could boycott kaepernick games, or campaign to get rid of him from a team, or rally the masses and that was all fine but the government doing so would be an infringement. I hadn't considered that trump's having first amendments rights would come into play but it makes sense that he has them too.

Happy Sunday!
