What are your two favourite French songs? (Shamelessly posting for traffic!)

Hi everyone.

Sorry this is so boring but just posting for traffic if that's okay!

I had a thread on here a few weeks ago about a weekly hospital radio show I was doing, where I'd planned to do a feature on it about French music each week.

I've been asked to start off this week by bringing in a couple of songs from two different French musicians or groups. Only thing is i don't want to start off with my absolute favourites and am not really sure how to start it all off.

This is where you lovely lot all come in :)

Would you mind letting me know your two favourite French-language groups or musicians please? Or your two favourite French songs?

Thanks! :)

Ta Douleur by Camille or M'en Voulez Vous by Pauline Croze. I love them both so much!

Any early songs by Patricia Kaas, like Des Mensonges en musique, or Mon mec à moi.
Love Jo Dassin's songs: Si tu t'appelles Mélancolie, Et si tu n'existais pas and many more.
Voyage Voyage by Desireless
and of course Paroles, Paroles by Dalida and Alain Delon

The Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Exquisite.

George's Moustaki - Le Métèque and Ma Solitude.

Although when I saw the title of the thread, the first thing that sprang to mind was Léon Le Caméléon, which will now be stuck in my head for the rest of the day...

I think in a music thread, can people put the name of the song/artist in the post as well as the link, as i dont want to click on every single random video and wait for it to load before seeing what it is

airedailleurs · 16/09/2017 17:09

ooh interesting one! I have found my people!

can we have more than 2?

Sorry can't do accents on here for some reason:

La Foule - Edith Piaf

Ca plane pour moi - Plastic Bertrand

San Francisco, Mon Frere -Maxime Le Forestier

Loads more probably, will have a think...

Isn't 'métèque' a Bad Word like the N word? Just asking, I'm not French so unlikely to be offended, and I'm not saying the song is offensive either, I would just like to know.* My OH played me that song because people used to refer to his 'gueule de métèque', as a dark skinned southern French type in an eastern region where people are more teutonic looking. He is 69 now, so the expression may be distinctly unPC.

  • I amused OH once by saying 'Tu peux crever demain' meaning to imply that tomorrow is promised to nobody and we should make hay while the sun shines style of thing, but because I used a strong slangy word for 'die' it sounded like I was telling him to drop dead, which was not what I meant. Such are the difficulties for those of us nowhere near fluent enough for any kind of deliberate nuance of meaning!

Piaf's 'La foule' makes my OH cry. Although he can always cheer himself up with 'La bitte de Dudule' or suchlike.

Ah France, the land of romance!

Lovely thread! Will add my voice to the Brel lovers - his lyrics are brilliant and often so poetic.

I scoffed when Carla Bruni brought out an album but I did like 'Raphael' - very catchy tune and easy to sing along to.

My mum used to have an LP of Petula Clark singing in French. It was good and helped me prepare for my A level listening exam. Grin
