To serve only jam sandwiches for a party?

Obviously other party food but some halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan etc required is just doing strawberry jam acceptable or will I be the talk of school for nothing more?

I'm craving jam sandwiches now!

My DD is 19, and I can honestly say I never saw a hummus sandwich at any party she went to! But, I can see that the vegan children may very well be used to, and like, them. I wouldn't make that many though!
OP, where is the party? As in, is it somewhere the adults can buy their own food if they want it? Personally, think tea and a biscuit is fine, and they can eat what the children leave if they want to.

WorraLiberty · 15/09/2017 19:42

I think from a lot of kid's POV, sandwiches are what the adults force you to eat, before you're allowed to dive into the cakes and biscuits Grin

InspMorse · 15/09/2017 19:42

Yep trinity
They looked good & the children bypassed the humous & carrots for the cakes. The table was littered with abandoned fairy cakes with one bite taken out of them.
It was a shame but God they were not nice.

Unihorn · 15/09/2017 19:44

Are there many vegan 5 year olds out there..?

Roomster101 · 15/09/2017 19:44

I would add cheese and maybe ham sandwiches. I wonder if the people who suggest humous have much to do with children. Not many like it. Those suggesting peanut butter sandwiches are also clueless because it you are inviting loads of children there will be at least one with a nut allergy.

timshortfforthalia · 15/09/2017 19:45

With reception age chn, there are always parents hovering behind their kids making sure they eat enough fruit and Veg and stopping them eating anything sweet til they'd finished the savory bits...

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 19:46

In a hall no access to buy food but newsagents near I guess

Quorn chipolatas are quite nice. Ds would live off hummous and cucumber sandwiches given half the chance. Ideally you don't want to be making a load of different things to cater to all tastes.

I used to have a bowl of those little apples and tangerines on the side and kids liked to pick at them. Little hummous pots with baby bread sticks are good too.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 19:48

One more question before I go make my own jam sarnie...😂😂😂

How many non turn ups do you usually expect? 20%?

Luncharmstrong · 15/09/2017 19:49

Just make jam sandwiches ! Nothing wrong with that.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 15/09/2017 19:50

Birthday parties require egg sandwiches cut into triangles with crusts removed, with sides of salt and vinegar chipsticks, skips and hula hoops. Cocktail sausages on sticks, party rings and chocolate fingers. The rest is irrelevant.

YoshimiBtPR · 15/09/2017 19:51

I find early in the school year most kids turn up. Sorry!
And (controversially Grin) a good handful of siblings. But that's another thread!

Leeds2 · 15/09/2017 19:53

Unihorn, I have never met a vegan 5 year old, if I'm honest, but OP said in the opening post that there was at least one vegan guest.

PumbletonWakeshaft · 15/09/2017 19:54

OP - if frugality is the aim, then Lidl is your friend for everything - cakes, crisps, sweets, biscuits, crackers, cheese, drinks cartons and you can raid their fresh baking section for the savoury filling stuff like pizza breads and baguettes. Also check out their freezer section, its surprising what you find in there!

By the by - wish people would stop saying sausage rolls. Read the OP Hmm

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 19:54

Only vegan adults I know but assuming they have vegan kids but unsure 😐

Oh, If you're skint don't worry about it. Don't add ham sandwiches to the mix though as then the kosher and halal kids might not eat anything due to ham maybe being in touch w other food. If you put out any meat go for chicken as it's less offensive, but honestly mid-afternoon they can manage without protein.

On the topic of protein, though, it depends what you're used to. Where I live hummous is pretty broadly accepted by vegetarian and non-veg kids. Ditto sushi. Kids eat pretty much what they're used to, barring strong and sulferous flavours like over-cooked broccoli and liver.

sonjadog · 15/09/2017 19:56

Just jam sandwiches are fine. It´s a snack at a party which I imagine isn´t for more than a couple of hours. They can have a hearty and balanced meal before and after.

HicDraconis · 15/09/2017 19:57

I must have a different breed of child to most people here. My boys don't like cheese or ham sandwiches. DS2 would eat tuna if he had to. Neither of them like any form of cream cheese, hummus, cucumber in sandwiches. They both adore 3 berry jam :)

It's a kids party between lunch and dinner - it's an afternoon tea rather than a full on meal. Jam sandwiches, crisps, chocolate fingers, bowls of lollies (by which I mean marshmallows, jelly beans, malteser type things), some caramel popcorn, no bake slices and fairy cakes - you'll be the talk of the school in that all the kids will rave about the great party. Use an olive oil spread instead of butter and they're all vegan friendly too.

Scones and jam has always been acceptable for afternoon tea, you're just changing the carb part to bread :)

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 19:58

Well I wasn't expecting that when checking up to ensure fairy bread was simply butter and sprinkles Blush

Sorry, I would think that completely grim, for my child to be offered jam sandwiches at a party. Worse than fruit shoots. 🤢

Lots of children eat hummus!! It's really normal nowadays, wasn't around when I was a child but then neither were avocados, blueberries and mango - all of which are staples in our house.

Unihorn · 15/09/2017 20:00

It may be normal where you are but it certainly isn't where I am so I don't know if you can make a sweeping statement like that.

WhatsThisNow · 15/09/2017 20:01

Oh I see, it's an afternoon tea.

Just do popcorn and fruit kebabs - longish cocktail sticks with fruit pushed on. If you're feeling fancy you can cover a grapefruit in tin foil and poke them in!

Most parents don't really love their children being offered loads of sugary things at a party.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 20:01

My own kid will happily eat hummus and olives and fancy breads etc

Not at a party over junk though

m.wikihow.com/Make-Pinwheel-Sandwiches#_ref-6

Pinwheel sandwiches look great with jam or chocolate spread
Add sprinkles if you want to be posh :)
Marmite too but don't get these muddled with the chocolate lol
Shiny ham works great for non veggies

Good luck
