To serve only jam sandwiches for a party?

Obviously other party food but some halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan etc required is just doing strawberry jam acceptable or will I be the talk of school for nothing more?

I have a 6 year old. Recommend jam. Cheese and ham get sweaty left out at parties and never get eaten. Humous, peanut butter, nutella all out due to allergy issues in our circles.

Please don't do dips. 20 grubby DC double dipping is bringing me out in hives.

If you need savoury then crisps, breadsticks and cheese straws.

Feeling the need for a halo emoji so DD3's current favourite dessert is oatcakes and bananas. Halo

Oh and I love the rainbow bread.

If you don't want to look "lazy" then cut the jam sandwiches with animal cutters and don't fling them out your 20 storey flat. Wink

CatastropheKate · 15/09/2017 19:01

Anyone else off to make a jam sandwich?

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 19:01

Yes reception age party and I'm skint but I'd saved for the rest for ages now panicking on the food

why did I decide on this?!

I'd ditch the ice lollies and sweets tbh, I've never seen ice lollies at a party and surely you'll be putting sweets in the party bag so don't really need them at the table
You've already said there will be crisps so I wouldn't add mini cheddars or Pom bears on top of that

When I've catered my own kids party I generally do -

  • Cheese/ham/jam or Nutella sandwiches
  • a mix of sausage rolls and the cheesy version
  • own brand wotsit/bacon fries/onion ring type crisps
  • cucumber/carrot sticks
  • breadsticks
  • grapes
  • mini fairy cake things

Packet of haribo and slice of cake in the party bag with whatever other plastic tat I've got

m0therofdragons · 15/09/2017 19:04

I'd be shocked at jam sandwiches at a party!!!

Huh? Dtds are 6 and every party I've been to for the last 3 years has had jam. Op nothing about organising a kid's party is lazy! I usually do cheese, ham and jam but haven't had to cater for all the issues you have. What about mini pizzas if you need more savoury things. We also did plastic cups with jelly - cheap, easy and effective with 3 different layers to make a rainbow. But honestly no one will care/remember

PinkHeart5913 · 15/09/2017 19:05

Just make sure you have a couple of savoury bits available ( mini cheddars style biscuits, cubes of cheese, cheese sandwiches for example) and your food will be fine!

It's just some dc like adults prefer savoury tastes so I'd have something savoury available

Rhubarbz · 15/09/2017 19:07

Just asked my kids and they said veg sticks (carrots cucumber), olives, tomatoes, jelly, crisps, sweet popcorn and birthday cake cake. Pineapple/cheese on sticks and strangely pasta!

WorraLiberty · 15/09/2017 19:07

I've yet to meet a kid who cares what's in the sandwiches at any party ever Grin

As for someone being 'shocked', there are no words really.

It's just a quick bite to eat at a party Confused

TrinityTaylor · 15/09/2017 19:08

Some jam some hummus some grated cheese. On both white and brown. Dead easy no chopping involved

noeffingidea · 15/09/2017 19:09

I would never serve jam sandwiches at a party. To me jam sandwiches are what you give your kids when you're absolutely potless and they keep saying they're hungry.
I used to do ham, wafer thin chicken and dairylea sandwiches (seperately), cos that's what my kids liked. In addition to, mini sausages and sausage rolls, crisps and some sweet stuff and fruit.

Unihorn · 15/09/2017 19:10

When did hummus become a party staple over jam sandwiches and party rings. I feel like this website is on a different planet to me sometimes.

Rhubarbz · 15/09/2017 19:10

You can pop your own pop corn and buy value crisps and so on

KrytensNanobots · 15/09/2017 19:10

Nothing wrong with jam sandwiches at a kid's party! I would do another as well though just so there's a choice as not everyone likes sweet sandwiches. Something savoury as well. Cheese would be a good choice as most people can have that and the vegetarians would be happy too. Smile

timshortfforthalia · 15/09/2017 19:10

The kids never eat the sandwiches. Don't waste your time. Am a bit Hmm at posters suggesting you need protein etc... It's just one meal, and a party meal at that.

I once did NO sandwiches. It was fine. Or cheapie cheese and Tom pizzas which they might eat

TrinityTaylor · 15/09/2017 19:12

Ooh yes dairylea or. Philadelphia I've not met a kid who won't eat that on white bread.

I only said hummus because my dd likes it and its less than a quid for a big tub, its not really posh food, I live in a flat in a slightly grubby part of Manchester, I'm definitely not one of those organic quinoa parents!

kennycat · 15/09/2017 19:12

I did nice sandwiches at my daughter's party ( cream cheese and cuc, hummous, nice ham) and no bugger ate them apart from my daughter. I asked what sandwiches they liked and they all said jam!
Luckily I'm super frugal so froze all the sandwiches I'd made so that was packed lunches sorted for the next gazillion weeks.

It was the first party I've done and I think next time I'm just going to put a pack of party rings and a big bag of crisps on the table as that is all anyone actually wanted!!

Crumbs1 · 15/09/2017 19:12

Don't panic and don't think you have to do amazing food. Children don't care. Jam sandwiches are very popular and please everyone. Just relax and enjoy your child having fun.

abacuss · 15/09/2017 19:15

Yy Worra, some lovely competitive parenting going on. I think that some people also have a LOT more cash and free time than others.

OP, no matter what you do, someone will judge you for something. But the one thing that will ruin any party is an upset host who's worried sick that people will judge. Let it all go and focus on the kids having some fun! Any snacks are good.

In my day it was the goody bags we all lived for anyway.

Calmanglass · 15/09/2017 19:15

So kids eat marmite sandwiches? Who knew?

Thethreegraces · 15/09/2017 19:15

I do cheese, jam & chicken/Turkey slices. That seems to be acceptable by all and I've had no complaints so far.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 19:16

Do you think adults will stay away from food?

I'm kind of counting on them accepting a cuppa and a biscuit since it's between lunch and tea anyhow

But if not I do need to figure something thrifty out urgently I think more than my current plans

OP posts:
Calmanglass · 15/09/2017 19:16

Ps jam sounds fine. Dinnae worry yourself.... they hardly judge free foods fgs

BeyondThePage · 15/09/2017 19:16

Wouldn't bother with sandwiches, kids often don't eat them - they prefer all the snacky stuff, crisps and party rings are actually a fantastic idea!

pizza - even cold vegan pizza goes down better than sandwiches and is easily home-made.

bostonkremekrazy · 15/09/2017 19:17

yep ditch the ice lollies and sweets - not needed.

add big bowls of popcorns, and corn type crisps or puff things...tesco do a 12 bag of onion rings, cheese puffs and salt vinegar sticks for about 55p....tip them all in a big serving bowl....

add a platter of chopped cucumber and carrot sticks - keeps parents happy

i'd add a second sandwich option - cheese spread is usually ok but not vegan....cucumber sarnies are nice :)

TrinityTaylor · 15/09/2017 19:18

@calmanglass Marmite with butter on white is a big hit round here, that and butter and sugar sandwiches!
