To serve only jam sandwiches for a party?

Obviously other party food but some halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan etc required is just doing strawberry jam acceptable or will I be the talk of school for nothing more?

In almost five years of parenting I have never come across a hummus sandwich at a kids party.

Plenty of jam though. Maybe I'm just moving in the wrong circles.

PumbletonWakeshaft · 15/09/2017 18:45

Not enough variety with the jam OP. Try this instead! Grin

Playdoughcaterpillar · 15/09/2017 18:47

Everything on your list is unhealthy. Sticks of carrots etc are cheap as chips. I would be a little unimpressed at the choice. Sandwiches should be savoury IMHO

EamonnWright · 15/09/2017 18:48

The real question is do you go butter with the jam.

It's a no from me.

SheSparkles · 15/09/2017 18:48

I wouldn't even bother with sandwiches for 5 year olds-in my experience they bite the corner off a sandwich triangle and leave the rest, no matter what the filling is!

Playdoughcaterpillar · 15/09/2017 18:48

Except the fruit. Sorry missed that. But still more sugar!

forceslover · 15/09/2017 18:48

It's a party! Sugar galore! Some of you must be real fun at kids parties!

AnneGrommit · 15/09/2017 18:49

I think what you're planning sounds absolutely fine. Kids like sweet things and it's a kids' party. My kids are older now but when they were little I'd much rather they had a jam sandwich than a pot of hummus/other dip that had had god knows whose fingers/half chewed breadstick shoved in it.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 18:50

Ok I will try come up with a little more savoury I guess eek 😬

I would love to serve wine but not sure I can afford unless we live on beans until afterwards so going to pretend I'm teetotal or something I guess 😂 tbh I'd rather parents left kids but doubt they will

I want to see video of any party child choosing salad sandwiches over jam. Just one video. Go on then.

Bananamama1213 · 15/09/2017 18:51

We did jam, cheese and ham sandwiches for my sons 5th party.

Another one we went to, they only did cheese or ham - my son doesn't like either! I don't know any children who don't like jam.

TatianaLarina · 15/09/2017 18:52

Cucumber, cheese, ham, job done.

QuackDuckQuack · 15/09/2017 18:52

Hummous sandwiches would be soggy by the time you serve them.

I found that carrot sticks didn't go down as well as cucumber.

I'd never take advice on party food from someone who complains about the sugar in fruit.

abacuss · 15/09/2017 18:52

I am Grin at all the kids who wouldn't ever touch jam and would prefer cucumber or carrots.

I mean, one or two maybe? But seriously!

TatianaLarina · 15/09/2017 18:52

I have to agree with the menu being overwhelmed with sugar.

Dancinggoat · 15/09/2017 18:53

They'll love it.

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 18:53

I don't think ham is an option as definitely quite a few cant eat pork and I don't want to be the parent that let them lol if they are left

Cheese is possible... cheese spread and jam passable???

Veterinari · 15/09/2017 18:55

How about those super-cheap little frozen cheese and tomato pizzas?

eBaydrama · 15/09/2017 18:56

My problem with anything cooked is I'm not sure I have access to cooker and time limits plus in hindsight I often burn stuff when panicking which I will be beforehand, almost certainly

Is it a reception party? Reception parents can be a little joyless about party food!

My kids would love jam sandwiches. I've done 80s party food before. Probably for pretentious reasons but it's really cheap too. I had some fun retro party plates etc.

So plates of jammy dodgers, party rings, wotsits, hula hoops, onion rings crisps, jelly and ice cream.

Make the sandwiches cute. Cut the crusts off, half fingers, half triangles. Half cream cheese, half jam?. Value cream cheese is nice and really cheap.

Supermarket brand crisps much cheaper than pom bears.

pimmsy · 15/09/2017 18:59

I second Veterinaris idea just get a jumbo pack of cheap frozen tomato and cheese pizza and cut into little squares.

Cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches

Carrot and cucumber sticks and cherry tomatoes

PumbletonWakeshaft · 15/09/2017 18:59

How about a couple of flavoured flatbreads from the supermarket, cut into chunks? They're pretty pizza-y but no cooking required :)

OffcialMalbecTaster · 15/09/2017 19:00

Well Ive just had to go and get a slice of bread and jam after reading this so I would be very happy. I thought jam sandwiches were a party staple?

Unihorn · 15/09/2017 19:00

It's a fucking kids party. If you don't want your precious angel children to eat sugar you probably shouldn't go. I find it amusing how many children on MN wouldn't touch jam sandwiches but would "devour" hummus and veg sticks.

If I were you OP I would do half cheese and half jam just so there's an option.
