To think this was the most pathetically stupid thing ever

Went to a supermarket cafe with 2yo DC, both our meals came after a silly long wait and mine was grim and stone cold so I asked for a refund (they offered me a choice of replacement or refund but it had taken so long to begin with and DC was tucking into hers at that point so refund was easier)
She has finished and was eating her fruit bag so I picked at a couple of chips that she hadn't eaten...she hadn't eaten a huge amount anyway! When the manager came barrelling over and whisked the plate from me to infront of her and told me "that meal is for age 10 and under not for adults" I said "she's finished her meal and mine was inedible" so he then said he would have to ask me to leave if I was going to eat another chip and did I want to be embarrassed infront of everyone...so we left anyway

So now a half plate of food has been wasted over 3 fucking chips

Fucking insania

He stole from you! I'd have been tempted to call him out there and then.

welshbutenglish · 15/09/2017 18:31

Threatening to 'embarrass' you in front of everyone is flipping' awful, should be ashamed of themselves! Put it on Trustpilot or Twitter - the best way to get a complaint dealt with by someone at the company who actually cares. Good luck

Benedikte2 · 15/09/2017 18:34

Sitting here giggling at the ridiculous scenario . Please do tell us the outcome of your complaint.
Our local Waitrose cafe(admittedly about 8 miles away in the next town) is lovely. Staff so helpful and friendly and ready to carry my tray . Free cup of coffee if you buy an item of food and an array of newspapers to read. If you don't want a snack there's a free Cuppa available in another area.

welshbutenglish · 15/09/2017 18:38

...to those saying don't name and shame...a little bit of trust pilot or twitter isn't exactly going to hurt these large companies, but it does get a faster and less-hassle result than writing letters or emails, waiting only to be given a standard apology. They should be expecting the highest of standards from their employees not berating and harassing their customers, they should be only too pleased to received some feedback

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 15/09/2017 18:40

I would totally shame them on social media. It would be richly deserved.

HelloSquirrels · 15/09/2017 18:44

To be fair I think they do deal with complaints well! I complained once because I bought chocolate buttons (their brand) that were a year out of date. I ate them before I'd noticed. I was fine and said so but they did send me £20 In vouchers

PashPash · 15/09/2017 18:46

Somehow I just knew this would be Morrissons.

We have 2 with cafes nearby and have stopped using both cafes due to the downright bonkers rudeness of the staff in both.

Things like being kept waiting several minutes to be served whilst staff had a nice chat amongst themselves (or not, since we walked out and left the trays full on the counter) and not a one off, happened a few times, and probably still does .

flynn80 · 15/09/2017 18:51

I had similar in pizza hut once, ds was still weaning, my friend and I got our buffet meal deal, and after we'd finished I went back up to get some fruit on a plate, ds had 1 a few grapes, he was barely 1.

The bill comes and the server says I will have to charge you for a child's meal as we saw your ds eating off your plate, I wish I could say I kicked up such a fuss, but I was knee deep in pnd, just paid without saying anything and went home and cried. I often think about it now and cant believe that was my response as its so unlike me!

Please complain OP

LabradorMama · 15/09/2017 18:57

OP you'd paid for the child's meal, it was yours to eat. Definitely complain, the manager's attitude was ludicrous.

Slightly OT but I cannot understand why restaurants care about adults ordering children's meals for themselves. Seriously, what does it matter to them? Years ago when my mum was undergoing chemo she had a hankering for fish and chips. My dad took her to her favourite fish & chip restaurant and ordered a child's portion for her as she had a small appetite, being so ill. They refused to serve it! She was obviously ill, in a wheelchair for goodness sake, but they would rather turn them both away than sell her a child's portion. Unbelievable.

PuppyMonkey · 15/09/2017 19:01

Regardless of whether you were picking at the chips, which is pretty much a given with kids' meals IMHO, what if your DD hadn't actually finished yet and was just having a breather before eating some more chips herself? Outrageous and I know you said you found it amusing but really... I almost feel like ringing the DM myself Grin

PuppyMonkey · 15/09/2017 19:03

Labrador, that's awful. Reminds me of when we went to Whitby and I fancied one sausage and chips but they said I couldn't have that as I was an adult - I had to have the adult portion of two sausages and chips... Hmm

LanaDReye · 15/09/2017 19:03

Flynn when I was depressed with a month old baby I tried getting a bus for the first time and able-bodied people had taken the pushchair seats. The driver grumpily shrugged and I got off, walked home and cried.

OP please complain, to make up for the times that people aren't able to. Then let us know your update!

What absolute twats!

Katherine2626 · 15/09/2017 19:08

Write to head office. The man is mad and needs some training in interpersonal skills, or possibly a straight jacket.

dragonara53 · 15/09/2017 19:23

What an arsehole, Morrison's cafe's serve shite food anyway. We went to our local one last year, waited 30 mins and it was cold. The staff disappeared into kitchen so we just left it. Will never go there again having said that I don't shop in Morrison's anyway. Over priced crap.

RB68 · 15/09/2017 19:38

THis is interesting really we regularly go out with MIL in her mid 80's she is tiny - 5.5st and 5 ft nothing and food is a serious issue, I always take a waiter/tress to one side and just ask if its possible she can have a childs meal as she is over faced with larger meals let alone not able to eat them as she only has half a stomach from a perforated ulcer years ago. We have never been refused once.

MiddlingMum · 15/09/2017 19:40

Our Waitrose doesn't have a cafe, it has a Grazing Area. You buy food from the special counter, then sit at tables and chairs to eat it. Nobody can understand the difference, including most of the staff Grin

fullofhope03 · 15/09/2017 19:41

Kniew it would be Morrisons! Feel like boycotting them now! Good heaven's, I've never heard anything so ridiculous Confused Wish Waitrose did have cafes, not the point but still

MsMarple · 15/09/2017 19:48

Just had a look at the terms and conditions of the free meal on their website:

"The child must be under 16 years of age and present at the time of purchase."

But it says nothing at all about the child being the one to eat it!

TyneTeas · 15/09/2017 19:53

The OP said she had paid for it

"I paid for both meals (the free kids meal starts at 3pm!) but apparently this wasn't good enough!!"

Cubtrouble · 15/09/2017 21:01

Ridiculous. I'd have asked for the manager.

Complain all the way OP. Bloody stupid people. If they'd been a bit quicker and made decent food you both could have eaten and paid for both. HE caused the problem not you.

Lindy2 · 15/09/2017 21:20

I'm stunned. I don't think he could have embarrassed you OP, people would be too busy thinking how crazy he was.
If I only want a small meal I often order a kid's meal or a starter. No one has ever refused to let me do that let alone stopped me eating a chip or 2 (or more) from my children's plate. We sometimes take left overs home for the cat too. What would this manager think if that? Cat is under 10 though so perhaps it would be ok. 😁
Surely it's not really about kids and adult meals it's about portion size. Customers should be able to choose a portion size appropriate for their appetite regardless of age. There is way too much food waste and portion sizes are generally way too big anyway.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 15/09/2017 21:33

He sought to intimidate you by suggesting he could embarrass you in front of other customers. Is he a closet Victorian who is still nettled that he no longer works at the Ritz? Your meal was inedible, he should be apologising not attempting to intimiate you!! What an idiot! and the "friend" who thought it was OK ???? I agree with earlier poster that confiscating the meal you'd paid for was theft. Lawks!

E17Stowmum · 15/09/2017 21:46

Which supermarket is this? Can't stand these riffraff hangouts

TheFirstMrsDV · 15/09/2017 21:54

Oh now I get it E17

Nice try though.
