To think my cat might have rabies.

He's chewed all the flesh from the tip of his tail, he was panicking because it was wet. I know it sounds mental but there is a possibility he was bitten by a bat and in England one species can carry a rabies virus.

Goodness, I sound crazy.

He doesn't have rabies. It's fine.

PsychoPumpkin · 05/09/2017 09:26

Vet!

PsychoPumpkin · 05/09/2017 09:26

For the tail.

Thepersonineedisnannymcphee · 05/09/2017 09:27

On way to the vet now.

I know I'm being ridiculous, but still an extreme reaction for a wet tail! I woke up to this today.

Excuse the mess!

First day back at school too!

hibertMcSchlibert · 05/09/2017 09:28

Nope. Not rabies. I seem to remember that there's a similar virus though.

It's incredibly unlikely it was bitten by a bat.

Sandsunsea · 05/09/2017 09:28

Wow. Definitely take the cat to a vet asap

CryingMessFFS · 05/09/2017 09:30

Wow OP, hope the vet can find the cause (rabies very unlikely!), your poor cat and poor you!

BarbarianMum · 05/09/2017 09:31

Rabies, in the later stages, is associated with the inability and therefore aversion to drinking water due to partial paralysis of the swallowing muscles. Not a fear of wetness per sec. Hope your cat is ok, I'm sure its not rabies.

SevenOf1981 · 05/09/2017 09:31

I'd always thought rabies wasn't here, but we recently rescued a bat that had flown into our bedroom.
We were told to wear thick gloves to catch it because some species do have the possibility of carrying it.
The chance is tiny so I hope your DCat is okay.

HiJenny35 · 05/09/2017 09:32

Omg- That's more than just a nibble that's horrendous! Poor cat and poor you! What a day for it to happen when its first day back at school too! Update us once you've seen the vet.

Cheby · 05/09/2017 09:34

I hope he's ok. It's unlikely to be rabies but you're doing the right thing in taking him.

Thepersonineedisnannymcphee · 05/09/2017 09:35

I know it's unlikely, but knowing my luck he will have it!!!

OP posts:
Thepersonineedisnannymcphee · 05/09/2017 09:36

That was about half the blood, it was dripping down the wall at the back and was on the floor as well. Poor thing.

OP posts:
Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 05/09/2017 09:38

Is that blood? Shock. You poor thing! Hope there's some explanation from the vet (but it won't be rabies).

Thepersonineedisnannymcphee · 05/09/2017 09:39

Yep, all blood.

It was everywhere.

OP posts:
Thepersonineedisnannymcphee · 05/09/2017 09:39

Oh and some poo.

OP posts:
Lonecatwithkitten · 05/09/2017 09:39

If this is what you woke up to this morning I would suspect he got his tail caught in something and you have a degloving injury.

Sukitakeitoff · 05/09/2017 09:40

@Barbarianmum rabies does actually cause an extreme phobia of water - not just of drinking it. As far as I know.

Seeingadistance · 05/09/2017 09:41

Oh my goodness! Poor cat, and poor you!

Maybe he has some incredibly awful itch in his tail.

I'm sure vet will see him right away with him in such a state.

Mittens1969 · 05/09/2017 09:41

Oh dear, your poor pussy cat, I'm not surprised you're panicking. I get why you're worried but it isn't likely to be rabies. The symptoms don't appear that quickly, the aversion to water comes much later, as I understand it.

Best to get your cat to the vet straightaway, you won't get your answer on here, but lots of concern.

Seeingadistance · 05/09/2017 09:42

I think Lonecatwithkitten is right.

Sukitakeitoff · 05/09/2017 09:43

Anyway sorry irrelevant as it's very unlikely this is rabies of course!

Thepersonineedisnannymcphee · 05/09/2017 09:43

He was acting strange yesterday fighting with it, I checked it, it was wet but no blood. He was very aggressive when I checked but there was definitely no injury. Then that this morning
