Which pieces of music do you find really moving?

Was just thinking about this, and would be interested to hear what you all think.

There are loads of pieces that I find hugely moving. I was thinking back to when I watched Dunkirk at the cinema, and I found the version of Nimrod played on the soundtrack really moving. I (and most of the audience, I think) were crying a little bit by that point. I also absolutely love I vow to thee my country, although I know people think it's a bit controversial. I think it's probably my favourite hymn.

Sorry, Rolando not Ronaldo..

Admirablenelson · 05/09/2017 21:00

Schubert, his very last song, "Pigeon Post"

Dido's Lament from Dido & Aeneas by Purcell. It's heartbreaking.

I want it at my funeral.

Firefly, I went to school with Hans Zimmer.

Lullaby and I'd Come for You by Nickelback
Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story from Hamilton
Lost, Forgiven, Pale and the Swan Song by Within Temptation
For Good from Wicked
I Don't Believe You by Pink
I'm sure I will think of others

Just My Echo
Skin by Sixx AM
My Immortal by Evanescence

Iris by the goo goo dolls. It's not even a song I'd normally like but the very first time I heard it, it came on the radio at a very particular time and summed up how I was feeling. Almost eerily so. Now whenever I hear it, it hits me in the chest
There you'll be by Faith Hill. I remember saying goodbye to a friend, which we both knew was final.. and this song came on. We both cried. Wahhh I'm sad now

Sugarformyhoney · 05/09/2017 22:04

Also Jesus to a child- such beautiful lyrics x

Amber run - I found

AlexaAmbidextra · 05/09/2017 22:13

Taverner's Song for Athene. My mum's coffin came into the church to this and I'll never again hear it without wanting to cry. I also love Nimrod from Elgar's Enigma Variations and I Vow To Thee My Country.

Mine is a beautiful Finnish anthem, written just before the 20th century when Finland were at risk of being annexed by Russia. The tune is beautiful, but I particularly like the "this is my song" words which were written in the 1930s

sashimiyummies · 05/09/2017 22:31

The thief of your heart Sinéad O'Connor

MuseumOfIdiots · 05/09/2017 22:32

Mercy Street by Peter Gabriel.
And, strangely, That'll Do by Randy Newman and performed by Peter Gabriel. He sang it a Terry Wogan's funeral as it was one of his favourites and I hadn't even realised anyone else had even heard of it.

switswoo81 · 05/09/2017 22:39

The score at the beginning of the film 'Up' gets me every time even without the beautiful animation it's a lovely piece of music.
Away in a Manger, it always reminds me of the saddest time in my life while teaching 4 year olds a Christmas concert and putting on a happy face.
'Here I am Lord' is the saddest hymn.

Sidge · 05/09/2017 22:45

Lots of these - Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Pachelbel's Canon in D Major, Nimrod.

I also love Israel Kamakawiwoole's version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

And I adore Ennio Morricone's Chi Mai. Haunting and beautiful.

NorthernLurker · 05/09/2017 22:53

We had highland cathedral on bagpipes at my Scottish bil's funeral. I can't listen to it now.

There is a worship song by Matt and Beth Redman, Blessed be Your Name, that is very hard to sing sometimes.

marymoosmum · 05/09/2017 23:00

The Jurassic park theme.

thegreylady · 05/09/2017 23:07

Most of mine have already been mentioned but some 'slighter' pieces which move me are:
The theme of Last of the Summer Wine with the lyrics as played after Compo's funeral
Those Were the Days by Mary Hopkin
Hey that's no way to say Goodbye by Leonard Cohen
The Train and the River played by Jimmy Guiffre(?)

storynanny · 05/09/2017 23:09

Oh how could I have forgotten Leonard Cohen. We all used to listen to his music at university in the late 70's. I am particularly moved by So long Maryanne and always wanted to call a daughter that name.
I had all boys.

ginghamstarfish · 05/09/2017 23:11

Allegro's Miserere - like angels singing.

ginghamstarfish · 05/09/2017 23:12

Allegri not Allegro!

MadameJosephine · 05/09/2017 23:17

Loads of those already mentioned but also Danny Boy because my beloved grandad used to sing it and it was played at his funeral

RosieLig · 05/09/2017 23:20

The Gael (last of the Mohicans)

Here it is on bagpipes. As a Scot the pipes always get me a bit.
