Why can't Teacher training be done in summer holidays

Why do summer holidays need to be extended by 3 days to cover inset days when teachers have had 6 weeks off. And before I get shot down I realise they may have been in school over the holidays etc. But what is the point in going back to school on a Thursday

DCs school have had a "family" inset day today.
I think that means they want to give families one more day together.

Teachers are paid for the amount of work they currently do. If teachers are given more work days then they would need to be paid extra for working more.

Why do teachers keep insisting that they don't get paid for holidays? Their holiday pay is included in their monthly salary. I used to work in a nursery and our hourly rare was extra to to cover holidays. We just had to put the extra hourly payment to one side in order to "pay" ourselves each week during the holiday periods. Simple.

@zzzzz I think for the many, we are just sick of the constant criticism for giving every ounce of strength to a career. Enough of that and you're bound to get defensive.

Probably the reason why you hear teachers telling people how many hours they work is because so many stupid uninformed people still think we piss off home at 3.30 every day.

I think - that if you added up all the hours teachers work including weekends and holidays, it would be the equivalent to someone working 9 - 5 plus the occasional few hours extra a week plus 28 days plus bank holidays.

So your average teacher probably works as many hours as other professionals - just those hours are more compressed during the school term, in the evenings, weekends and over some of the 13 week holidays.

We are paid for the 195 days a year we are contracted to work. No holiday pay,to put to one side. Our payment for 195 days is split into 12 equal payments. How hard is it to grasp that?

Because that's not how it works.
We are contracted for 195 days per year.
We get paid for 195 days per year.
Our salary is then divided by 12 months so we get a pay packet each month but it's only a 195 day contract. That's why lots of teachers have other jobs in the holidays like tutoring or holiday clubs.
Loads of teachers would work more days if the government wanted to pay for the additional days, they won't do end of.
Do you ask people who work in a supermarket or bank to come in on days when they aren't under contract or being paid?

I could imagine you could do Skelton planning in your time off (aka the curriculum) but surely you know what trends your class is going to fall into, dinosaurs, transformer, babies etc) so plan for interchangeable ideas. (I am a project manager so this stuff does come relatively easy to me)

I am sure you have a hand full of children who are not easy to engage, but surely if you was paid better and worked through the school holidays you would have time to think of these in advance?

It feels disingenuous to say teachers are not paid for the holidays when they clearly are. I could calculate my total annual contractual working hours, discounting the paid holiday, and say I was only being paid for that, but it's not true.

But i agree (and im not saying zzzzzz doesnt ) that teaching is a a very hard profession that does seem to be criticized more than most jobs

The teachers i know do work incredibly hard

We averaged my DH's working hours out across the whole year, including the 'zero' weeks of school holidays. It still worked out at over 50 a week. Crazy really.

Holidays are too long

Insets are wrong

Honestly, it's hard enough even without the constant sniping as if it's a walk in the park.

I've got 5 years higher education and a masters on top.

My mates are mostly doctors, lawyers and accountants. Even the doctors don't get this much crap from the general populace.

You do know that teachers do work during school holidays? When do you think the weekly, half term and year plans happen?

I think the reason so many non teacher get pissed off with the fact that us teachers get fucking fabulously long holidays is that we are therefore unable to provide the free childcare to allow them to go about their own jobs and daily lives. Which is, natuellement, the only reason education and schools exist.

I think people keep saying teachers don't get paid for the holidays because well they get a high salary for working just 190 days a year. Yeah it's not Ferrari buying money but it's enough, and a life mornethen the total combined income of many parents household income.
