Why can't Teacher training be done in summer holidays

daffodil10 · 04/09/2017 21:33

Why do summer holidays need to be extended by 3 days to cover inset days when teachers have had 6 weeks off. And before I get shot down I realise they may have been in school over the holidays etc. But what is the point in going back to school on a Thursday

If the school term schedule simply said the term started the day after the inset day then I think it wouldn't be so controversial. I don't know why the inset days are always listed as part of the term if they in fact are not.

Another controversial question is why schools seem surprised every year in September that there are children arriving again... :)

Scabetty · 06/09/2017 21:56

As a TA I did two inset days this week: first aid, Safeguarding, new staff induction and setting up classrooms to welcome the children back.

Waffles80 · 06/09/2017 21:56

I have worked four 11 hour days since we returned to work; I worked two 11 days prior to our two inset days.

(This is on top of taking exam classes, unpaid, in every single holiday this year - which cost me £90 each time in childcare).

Speaking of childcare - I've not seen my own children at all this week.

People who bang on about teachers' holidays should fucking well fuck off, or come to my school (top 10% in deprivation calculators) and try to do just an eigth of the work we do with children from very difficult backgrounds. CLUE: you'd need more than 13 fucking weeks 'holiday' a year to scratch the surface.

eulmh · 06/09/2017 22:05

They Are still part of the holiday. Also they need to have them at this time once analysis of gcse results etc has been done! We have to have a set amount of training days so if it's not now it'll be at some point in the year which is equally as difficult for parents. Btw teachers hate training days more than parents. The other teachers are the hardest part of the job sometimes, not the kids!

AmateurSwami · 06/09/2017 22:36

Op why not become a teacher seeing as you're so qualified? Then you too can enjoy those lucrative extra days.

daffodil10 · 06/09/2017 22:38

Amateur sorry did I say I was qualified Hmm

OP posts:
AmateurSwami · 06/09/2017 22:39

So what exactly are you offering? General slagging off of teachers when you aren't even qualified enough to be one?

Waffles80 · 06/09/2017 22:39

You seem to think you're qualified to have a crack at us...

daffodil10 · 06/09/2017 22:43

Ok so here we go again, I've admitted i was wrong, I've admitted my stupidity but in typical mn style that's not enough. I'm not entirely sure what else I can say

OP posts:
daffodil10 · 06/09/2017 22:44

Oh and amateur you've no idea what profession I'm in and whether I'm qualified or not so don't begin to assume !!

OP posts:
Threenme · 06/09/2017 22:48

I think it's good to admit you're wrong but the reason it provokes such a response as is that teachers get abused like no other profession

daffodil10 · 06/09/2017 22:50

Threenme I think that is certainly apparent by the vitriol on this thread.

OP posts:
Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 06/09/2017 23:00

Yeah agree with daffodil

I completely understand that threads move on and its ok to keep debating

But people keep coming back on to have a pop at daffodil and she has apologised ninety billion times (approximate figure)

MSLehrerin · 06/09/2017 23:06

I'm just in from a school event. I left the house at half past seven this morning, had breakfast with some kids who had rolled in looking like shite as their parents had been up arguing all night.

I then went to one of our associated primaries to see a kid recently diagnosed with ASD and who may have difficulty transferring to high school.

I missed my 15 min interval because I was driving back to school.

I then had an irate parent awaiting me in reception re some crap about school shoes (they had bought the wrong ones so kid had been sent home 🙄 sent her away with a flea in her ear)

I taught two German lessons and spent lunchtime with a couple of kids who had no lunch - I shared mine with them.

This afternoon was spend catching up on emails. Was in the house for a grand total of 15 mins getting changed for school event.

Attended school event and came home at 10.45pm. Realised I hadn't peed since I left the house this morning.

I'm not complaining at all. At no point in my day did I begrudge my time or effort with anyone (apart from the school shoes mother). I spent loads of time with fantastic kids and chatted to some great parents on the phone. Just a day in the life of a typical secondary teacher really.

Yip, we've got it easy. And long holidays to boot.

Threenme · 06/09/2017 23:10

Then daffodil maybe stop apologising! I wouldn't feel to bad you've admitted you're wrong and people have said dafter things than your op!!!!

daffodil10 · 06/09/2017 23:24

Threenme I'm afraid I'm not willing to accept statements such as starlight Honestly op - how naive are you? And say nothing.

OP posts:
Alisvolatpropiis · 06/09/2017 23:48

I know you have said you stand corrected op, so my comment is a more general one rather than directly at you.

My ex husband is a teacher, a very good one. Being with him really opened my eyes to what teaching is like, it breaks people, experienced, talented at their job people. I'm not at all surprised people are leaving the profession in their droves. I could never be a teacher and nor could the vast majority of those who criticise them.

Adnerb95 · 07/09/2017 04:05

As an ex-teacher I always refer to the summer holidays as the annual nervous breakdown.

SouthWindsWesterly · 07/09/2017 04:38

My school has inset days. They also ask parents to buy tissues, some glue etc because money is tight, so I totally relate to ]] and also buy my DC teachers wine at the end of the term, because let's face it, I know my children and they'll bloody well need it.

OP is now getting a really hard time despite the fact she's said she stand corrected. Bet half of us couldn't do OP's job either. Swings and roundabouts people, swings and roundabouts

MSLehrerin · 07/09/2017 06:21

The OP @daffodil10 is not getting a hard time. She apologised and the discussion moved on to other things. There's a Marty/victim card being played by @daffodil10 now which PPs have pointed out a few times now.

MSLehrerin · 07/09/2017 06:22

Fecking bold fail 😕 it's too early.......

MaisyPops · 07/09/2017 06:32

Personally, i think the tone of the originap post was more 'let's have a pop at school holidays' than asking a question for informatjon. It probably set the tone for the whole thread. But OP has come back and admitted they were wrong.

They've equally done a lot of 'poor me. I guess i was wrong to ever ask a question/ i'm learning now that you can't ask an innocent question on mn' all the way through the thread, which people have responded to.

We're on p23 and still getting I've admitted i was wrong, I've admitted my stupidity but in typical mn style that's not enough.

Garliccalamari · 07/09/2017 06:37

But why can't we do it all differently? Just bear with me for a moment.

What if the teacher teaches the kids in the morning for 250 days? The kids will have about the same total hours taught. What if the teacher then has the day till 5 to do the marking, training etc. I do feel it's most draining to not have an evening off. What if the kid isn't taken to childcare but the childcare is provided in the school?

This way the teachers are less tired because they make the same hours we do. Parents don't have to ask all and sundry to provide childcare for months during the holidays. The school is more in tune with the businesses where we work so less problems there. We might appreciate each other more.

MSLehrerin · 07/09/2017 06:45

@Garliccalamari why on earth would you do that? 365 days in a year. Kids in school for 250 of those. 104 days are a weekend. 11 days holiday left for kids and teachers. Don't be ridiculous....

MaisyPops · 07/09/2017 06:50

Garliccalamari
So teachers and students get weekends only plus 11 days holiday a year so that parents can have year round free childcare?

It comes back to this main point: the point of schools is to educate. It's not to provide childcare.
