Wow: Hurricane Irma now has sustained winds of 185 mph - this makes Irma tied for the second strongest storm ever for the Atlantic.

Zach Covey @ZachKFOX_CBS
#BREAKING: Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for the Florida Keys ahead of Major Hurricane #Irma. Winds of 185mph currently.

It must be a world record. Talking out of his arse and kissing Trump's at the same time.
Leprechaun Sessions on ending DACA. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/09/2017 19:53

Irma is one of the scariest storms I've seen. The Islands in the way are going to suffer catastrophic damage.

Lweji · 05/09/2017 19:55

:(

I wonder if the US will offer any help.

badbadhusky · 05/09/2017 19:57

That's awful OYBBK. They are countries which really can't afford to help their populations to rebuild. I hope there isn't a catastrophic health crisis (like Haiti) off the back of the storm. Sad

It is awful and all the news cares about is whether it will hit the States.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 05/09/2017 20:05

Barack Obama
Barack Obama @BarackObama
To target hopeful young strivers who grew up here is wrong, because they’ve done nothing wrong. My statement:

orlantina · 05/09/2017 20:11

Part of Barack Obama's statement

Ultimately, this is about basic decency. This is about whether we are a people who kick hopeful young strivers out of America, or whether we treat them the way we’d want our own kids to be treated. It’s about who we are as a people – and who we want to be.
What makes us American is not a question of what we look like, or where our names come from, or the way we pray. What makes us American is our fidelity to a set of ideals – that all of us are created equal; that all of us deserve the chance to make of our lives what we will; that all of us share an obligation to stand up, speak out, and secure our most cherished values for the next generation. That’s how America has traveled this far. That’s how, if we keep at it, we will ultimately reach that more perfect union.

How the hell did America go from Obama to Trump?

BiglyBadgers · 05/09/2017 20:16

It is awful and all the news cares about is whether it will hit the States.

Call me Captain Cynical, but the people Antigua, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are around 75% black/ African American, while Florida is 75% white. I may suggest that rather explains the bias.

SenecaFalls · 05/09/2017 20:20

It is awful and all the news cares about is whether it will hit the States.

The Weather Channel is covering the threat to the islands.

BiglyBadgers · 05/09/2017 20:27

I am also seeing stuff on Twitter about tropical storm Jose looking like it may be following on Irma's tail. Is this right? Confused

Lweji · 05/09/2017 20:39

Hurricane Irma has become so strong it's showing up as an earthquake on seismometers

Shock

"very dangerous weather could also occur up to 200 miles away from the eyewall, the most devastating region of a hurricane."

Sometimes its hard not to throw your hat in with the 'End Timers'. This feels like one of those periods.

I wish we had room for a bunker in our garden. We looked at a house in this neighbourhood that still had its WW2 bomb shelter in the back garden - would have been 10+ years ago. It's only about a 5-10 min walk from here. I wonder if the people who bought the house kept it.

SenecaFalls · 05/09/2017 20:48

Yes. Jose is coming behind Irma. I'm in Florida.

SenecaFalls · 05/09/2017 20:49

Meant to add, I'm in Florida so watching it closely.

cozietoesie · 05/09/2017 20:51

I'd guess you are, Seneca. Best of luck.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/09/2017 21:12

I'm glad the weather channel are covering it properly Seneca.

I'm hoping that TS Jose will be affected by sheer from Irma, but it's still developing over very warm ocean.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 05/09/2017 21:14

Keep safe seneca

This expansion thread of the politico piece about the Gerisamov Doctrine is interesting. It tries to counter the arguments that have been levied against it

I'm not able to copy it all onto this thread but you can find it here:

AcrossthePond55 · 05/09/2017 21:19

Oh, Seneca! I forgot you live in 'Hurricane Country'.

Fingers crossed that Irma and Jose don't score a direct (or indirect) hit. Will be thinking of you.

BiglyBadgers · 05/09/2017 21:36

Gosh, take care Seneca!

MicrowaveSpy · 05/09/2017 21:45

Take care Seneca. Will be thinking of you Flowers

MicrowaveSpy · 05/09/2017 21:48

I am not a religious person but it does feel as if all hell has been let loose.

lionheart · 05/09/2017 22:02

Hope it stays safe for you Seneca.
